The first widespread reporting of how this was hitting people of color particularly hard also coincides with when most of the open-it-up movement and protests started gathering steam. The MAGAts saw it wasn't (at the time) white, rural, REAL Americans who were getting clobbered so it was clearly time to end the madness and let Billy Joe Bob and Bubba go to their favorite bar.
it's cruel, it's mean-spirited, it's decidedly hypocritical and un-Christian like thinking, but the only hope we have is for this thing to hit rural and white folks and hit them hard. We know the MAGAts won't blame the right people for economic disaster. We know they won't care about people of color and undocumented workers getting sick and dying. But if we could wipe a few towns off the map in Nebraska and Kansas and Texas, we might get them to see that a virus that knows no color or residence means we have to have a unified response to it. At this point it doesn't matter to me WHY someone would do the right thing, only that they are doing it.
