Some Democrats are still wimps, that's all it comes down to. He's exactly my age; he's old. He still has Reagan PTSD and he thinks tacking towards the center and appealing to the goons is smart politics. He has as little idea of how to win today as Bill or Hillary or Biden. He thinks that if we just squeeze our eyes really tight Republicans won't be Nazis anymore.

There is a non-trivial portion of the public who sees this and thinks, "well the Republicans may be out for themselves and they may sh-t all over democracy, but at least they aren't p-ssies."
