Much of math had huge contributions from Islamic Math- we don't call them Arabic numbers for no reason.

The original REAL steel came out of Iraq. Much of glass foundations are from the middle east.

If I'm not mistaken, a LOT of what defines the current West are glass covered, steel buildings which took a lot of math to make.

It's easy to dismiss that with the recent changes to the in-fighting within Islam. But that's just ignorant.

When I told Dr. Mrs. this she was blown away (I was tickled to actually know something about government she doesn't :) ). Her reaction was, "that should actually be impossible even if he was just one term."

To give you an idea, Orrin Hatch has served roughly 3x (41 years) King's tenure (14 years), and has authored over 700 bills that not only got out of committee but became law!

She did say she was aware that King is considered a sort of unofficial "Least Effective Member of Congress" by everybody from fellow Members to lobbyists to staffers, and he's a sort of running unfunny joke. She compared him to Ted Stevens, except she said Stevens for all his idiocy was well-liked, whereas the only thing stopping King being the least respected Member of Congress is Ted Cruz.

It's not. I suppose it's better now that they don't pretend. I used to think some of them were ok in this regard, but I guess not.

Many of them are OK individually but when their political feeder button gets pressed they merge into the RWNJ Borg and all critical thought shuts down.

The great innovation of the Republican party over the last 8-10 years is they learned they can speak to the worst people in their coalition openly, because the moderate conservatives will always look the other way / make excuses / deny what's happening right in front of their face. The thing that prevented the GOP from sinking to the lowest common denominator level hitherto was if they winked too explicitly to the Deplorables, the sane ones would get demoralized and sit the election out. This is no longer true and in fact the righty calculation now is to say the craziest lying garbage that comes into your head because the base will eat it up and the middle will rationalize it.

You can see it happen right here in microcosm on the Cafe when one of the Usual Suspects says something that would have been political suicide just 10 years ago. Flag buys it, Fish parses and excuses it, and the rest of the righties just don't address it. They wouldn't cheer Trump shooting somebody on Fifth Avenue, but it wouldn't affect their willingness to vote for him either. The right has become detached from empirical inputs. They live solely in their heads now in an unfalsifiable circle of ideology.

This headline sums up my reaction perfectly.

It's been obvious for decades that while the majority of Republicans are not racists, the national and some state GOP outfits use dog whistles to racists. I lived through a Jesse Helms campaign in NC where it was more like Clarkson's **** train whistle. But I never thought I would live in an America where the ruling party could overtly use white nationalist language befitting the Ku Klux Klan.

This is happening. An actual, non-metaphorical, fascist regime is taking shape in the United States.

OK, conservative lovers of freedom, the Constitution, and individual liberty. The sitting Republican party is everything you have always worried about. The monster is in the building, he just came out of the opposite dressing room than you expected. Is that really going to be reason for you to sit on your hands? Are you really going to just say "nothing to see here"? I'll bet that's exactly what happens when any reactionary nationalist junta takes power.

We outnumber the people who want this -- who live for this -- by about 70-30. We have the numbers, but you have to stand. Come on, folks, this is the crisis you always said was coming. Townies up.

Someone said, and I'm not sure if it was this board, or some other board I frequent, but the gist was this:

Ever wonder, in the past, during some great crisis that was happening, what you would have done? Let's say, like in Russia during the revolution, or the reign of Stalin. Or the rise of Hitler or Mussolini. During the American Revolution.

Exactly what you're doing now.
