Voting for a third party in a national election that uses the Electoral College for President is idiocy. Even if you accidently win a state or two and keep someone from hitting 270, the House picks the winner, and your third party never bothered to run any House members for office.
Running for Governor is rarely achievable. The White House will never be.
I reject your idea that voting for a third party candidate is useless. Why do you claim that? Because they have "no chance?"
If that's your argument, then voting for a Republican for President while a resident of California, or voting for a Democrat for President while a resident of North Dakota is also "useless."
Furthermore, if your thinking is correct, we can never have a viable third party since no one can vote for them until they have a enough support to win.
