"Senator, I do not recall" is the classic line used by everyone before a Senate committee.

Ignorance of the law is not a defense. Ignorance as a factual matter is a defense when the crime requires specific intent as an element of the crime.

If you intentionally shoot your gun into the air, and accidentally kill someone, you could be charged with manslaughter or possibly murder. But you couldn't be charged with attempted murder because, though the firing of the gun was intentional, you didn't have the specific intent to actually kill that person.
