A 36-year-old lawyer who has never tried a case and who was unanimously deemed “not qualified” by the American Bar Association has been approved for a lifetime federal district judgeship by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The lawyer, Brett Talley, is the fourth judicial nominee under President Trump to receive a “not qualified” rating from the bar association and the second to receive the rating unanimously. Since 1989, the association has unanimously rated only two other judicial nominees as not qualified.

Ms. Feinstein also pointed to Mr. Talley’s prolific social media presence before his nomination. He once referred to Hillary Clinton as “Hillary Rotten Clinton” on his public Twitter account, which is now private.

At the committee vote on Thursday, Ms. Feinstein took greatest issue with Mr. Talley’s professed views on gun control. In 2013, about a month after a gunman killed 20 children at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., Mr. Talley on his blog pledged his total support to the National Rifle Association, “financially, politically and intellectually.”

Obviously I get that in this specific case it was a Reagan appointee and I haven't looked into this record.

That kind of goes without saying as that's a judges job description.

Regardless at the time of sentencing, I don't remember many people thinking judge TS Ellis' complements of Manafort's character very accurate nor the original sentencing of 1/6 the recommended prison time particularly adequate.

Iraq has banned it from it's airspace.

Manafort getting away with only an extra 3.5 years tacked on to his previous sentence.

Interesting to note: CNN is reporting that Boeing is saying the government shutdown caused the FAA to stall approval of a software fix for the 747 MAX 8.

Dump wanted to own the shutdown, does he now have the blood of two airline crashes on his hands?

And we ran a judge out of California for using the sentencing report and guidelines for the Stanford swimmer case. I don't like mandatory minimums. I want the judges to use sentencing guidelines as just that, guidelines. Use the sentencing report and, if necessary, their discretion. If the judge felt like the guidelines and circumstances of the case warranted a shorter sentence, so be it. Yeah, it sucks sometimes. But better than someone getting caught with a joint in their pocket and have mandatory minimums ruin their life.

He's 70. Even with a four-year sentence, he's not getting out until he's 74. Those are four hard f-cking years in a jail. Should he have gotten more? Probably. But I'm not going to get too hung up over whether he should rot in jail for the rest of his life or just most of the rest of his life.

I'm not as big on the punitive part as much as I don't want him to participate in society further harming it.

He's a felon. Who's going to spend probably 25-100% of his remaining years behind bars before he gets sentenced today. His role in society was ended after the first trial.

I don't know. I just know that he's not going to be affecting elections for two more cycles. And he's going to be pretty miserable going from a lavish lifestyle to rotten bologna sandwiches.

And now he's gotten an additional 43 months. So something like 8 years less time served. When you consider all of the crimes in whole now, his crimes were split between two separate trials, eight years seems appropriate. It's a life sentence.

He's lost everything and now he's lost his freedom likely forever. Yeah, that's probably appropriate.

Edit: Ok, so 30 of those months are concurrent. So he got 60 months in federal prison. Five years is still basically the rest of his productive life. And he'll come out with a fraction of what he owned.

Edit 2: Wait, now I'm questioning the write-up I just read. It's written very sloppily and I have no idea how much total time he got.

True. But my concern is that we to send messages to others who would tamper with our election.

To the point my concern is that hundreds of thousands of people feel strongly enough about politics to be open to tampering with elections if they knew they would get these kinds of sentences. That's not good.

Ok, so the original CNBC article I read was terribly written. Manafort will get 7.5 years total.

Almost 8 years in prison? That's not a deterrent? For the type of person who has enough power to influence elections, that's a very long time.

What would have sent a message? The federal maximum of 10? So 2.5 years longer?

According to Kos:

Manafort received five years for violations of laws against foreign lobbying, and 13 months for witness tampering. On the first charge, 30 months of the sentence will be concurrent with the 47-month sentence from Virginia. The 13 months on the witness tampering is to be served consecutively. In total, the results from the D.C. court add three and a half years to Manafort’s time in federal prison. So Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort will spend seven and a half years total in prison.

Well as it turns out, he has more sentencing today. I don't fully understand it myself, but he is up for another potential 10 years. I'm a bit more hopeful as this judge is an Obama appointee and may not rubber stamp this.

Judge Jackson was appointed to the bench in 2000, a Clinton appointee.
