President Trump this week added another wrinkle to his long complicated relationship with his home state, when he encouraged residents of upstate New York who are unhappy with the region’s economy to “go to another state.”

Mr. Trump’s comments, which came during an interview with reporters at the White House on Wednesday, were his latest critical remarks of the region, which has lost thousands of residents in recent years amid a sluggish economy.

“If New York isn’t going to treat them better, I would recommend they go to another state where they can get a great job,” Mr. Trump said, according to The Buffalo News.

Mr. Trump, who lived in New York City for most of his life, has routinely put down upstate New York despite finding widespread support there. In the 2016 election, he flipped 14 upstate counties that Barack Obama won in 2012. Yet during the campaign, he singled out the area as a “ghost town,” and in 2017 suggested to The Wall Street Journal that residents leave the region. “It’s O.K., don’t worry about your house,” he said.

Despite Mr. Trump’s cynical advice, New York Republicans said they were not offended by the comments. Rather, they agreed with the president’s assessment.

“He was stating the obvious, and the obvious is that New York has been in a death spiral for 50 years,” said Chris Collins, the congressman who represents the Buffalo area and was the first member of Congress to endorse Mr. Trump’s campaign. “All of the problems in New York State are driven by policy out of Albany that is now 100 percent controlled by downstate interests.”

So, what caused this in the first place. You guessed it. The tax cut.

Mr. Trump’s comments came the same week New York reported a $2.3 billion budget gap, which Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo blamed on Mr. Trump, whose 2017 tax bill put a cap on the so-called SALT deduction for state and local property taxes. Mr. Cuomo said this has created “an economic civil war” between blue and red states.

“The economic incentive to move out of New York is higher than it has ever been,” Mr. Cuomo said Thursday at a speech in Manhattan. “SALT put that problem on steroids. Our tax collections are down about 50 percent.”

But in his Wednesday interview, Mr. Trump seemingly did not understand the full extent of his tax bill, saying it would not hurt upstate New York because it only “affects wealthy people.”

When reporters clarified its effects, Mr. Trump said he was “open to thinking about” revisiting the issue.

At a bare minimum, all of this will totally make the executive ineffective. The House will have no reason to consider what he wants, as they will impeach him. The Senate will be strung by what the House does. And at some point, the odds of getting enough votes to override a veto an keep the government running will happen. Even if the Senate does not finish the job.

The difference being that in 1974 prominent republicans were calling for Nixon's head. In May of 1974 John Anderson, head of the House Republican Conference called for Nixon to resign. Republican minority leader John Rhodes also said Nixon should consider stepping down, after warning Nixon earlier in the year he better begin cooperating with the various Watergate investigations. There hasn't a single republican during trump's term who has even approached that level of statesmanship. For all the praise progressives have given to Jeff Flake, Bob Corker and the late John McCain for their (mostly) watered down rebukes of trump never once have they called for the president's resignation or done much more than poo-poo trump for his lack of decorum. For all the good the I hope to see from the democrats electoral success in November 2018 (and earlier in a handful of special elections) the fact is, virtually every single republican elected official and voter either does not believe the truth about trump and the election, or does not care.

Contrast current Republican reaction to any controversy involving one of their members, with Democrats reaction to their members in Virginia. Or even Al Franken.


Republicans will not stand up to their own, no matter how heinous or criminal their conduct.

Be a little careful about the Watergate analogy. Until and unless Mueller delivers, they do no have the level of proof against Trump that they did with Nixon. Trump is even more loathsome than Nixon, IMO, but it's just been body blows so far.

Ever since hearing about how good North Korean hackers are, I’ve always had some tin foil hat inklings. The “Rocketman” period sort of debunks anything, butt at the same time he’s been for too praiseful of a man whose nicest move was to a share a women’s hockey team.

Actually I don't even agree that he's suffered body blows. There is no difference now in trump's abilities and his actions than the first day he took office. Hopefully as more time passes with the House in Democratic hands, that will change.

In 1974 Nixon was suffering from the drop in his support. His base was beginning to abandon him, the vocal cheerleaders in the House and Senate had dwindled to just a few and his ability to be presidential in the eyes of the world looked very different a year into his term. Nothing is changed as far as that stuff goes for trump. Dictators knew they could count on him because of his dalliance with the Russians, most of the leaders of the free world already knew he was an ineffectual buffoon, and 55%-60% of Americans already saw him as an existential threat the day after he won an Electoral College majority.

Yet here we still are. Mueller is never going to "deliver." trump will not be indicted, neither will any of his children or in-laws. One of the people in Mueller's sites may yet place the true "smoking gun" in the president's hand and republicans in congress will either do nothing, or claim it to be lies and fake news. And so will the 40% of Americans who are so troubled or stupid that they actually believe trump is not just a good or great president but something more akin to a savior. The people who are on his side are on his side harder and deeper than I have seen for a president in my lifetime. The only reason I don't want to see the Russian mob (AKA the Russian government) do to trump what they do to anyone else after he outlives his usefulness to their oligarchs is that trump supporters will literally treat the guy like he is Christ.
