Actually, there are times when you can get screwed by making too much money. When the company my parents worked at inverted and they had to see 100% of their stock in the company, they were kicked into all sorts of different areas like Medicare. He might not be using the right words, but there are cliffs edges that happen in the US tax code.

I normally get a refund but my accountant said I’ll be lucky to break even. High tax state and the cap on deductions, as suspected, hurts people like myself.

Now if fidelity can just generate my docs I can get these done

I was talking to my dad about this. He said Minnesota did something weird with regards to the taxes. I think this is what he was referring to.

My understanding was that most of what we were going to get back was already in the deductions from our paychecks being lower.

Not knowing at all, this does sound like something related to the changes made under Dump's Heist which frontload your refund so you get it in your paycheck, thus making him look great.... right up until tax day, at which time everybody will scream like a wounded water buffalo that their refund is gone (or they owe).

MN may have said thanks but no thanks, in which case your refund would actually be unaffected from prior years. I guess?

States like MN were hit worse, as our state income taxes are no longer a credit against our federal taxes. So many Minnesotans may see a net tax increase, or at the very least our tax cuts are effectively less than those people who live in states with tax structures that were changed to comport with the federal GOP's tax philosophy.

I’m boned several ways. I paid over 5k in property taxes, 13k in state and 40k in federal and I’m still gonna owe some.
Part of issue is I cashed in some RSUs and options that vested, raising my income. I may have been fine if I hadn’t done that.

Minnesota did nothing because the Republicans blocked it. As usual they were using it as an excuse to gut the rainy day fund down to zero so when we need it we don't have it.
