The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) officially expired at midnight last Friday due to the partial government shutdown that is now in its sixth day.

“Don’t let this go unnoticed: the Violence Against Women Act, which helps survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault, expired with the government shutdown,” Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) tweeted on Sunday, adding, “It’s deeply concerning.”

What the Mueller thing has is staying power. It is going to continue with no end in sight for a long, long time. And when it is over open minded thinking voters are going to be plenty disappointed. What's worse is they may be disillusioned as well, and decide it serves no purpose to participate in our democracy.

No matter what the final outcome of Mueller's investigation ends up being, republicans in the congress will take absolutely no action. trump won't be indicted. And if he is defeated at the polls in November of 2020 the best we can hope for is he slinks away like a bully who gets his noise bloodied.

Frankly, I fear his defeat -- IF republicans are no more successful at suppressing votes than they were in 2016 or 2018 -- will lead to the biggest crisis this country has faced since the Civil War. The existential threat our democracy faces in trump wasn't likely to be some sort of a shooting war, or, God forbid, WWIII (and the end of civilization on Earth), it is the citizenry consuming ourselves in constitutional chaos when 40% of Americans refuse to accept the results of a presidential election. republicans won't walk away as peacefully as democrats did when Gore had the 2000 election stolen from him.

I agree that there should be many stops along the way that would prevent a banana republic from forming November 2020. But I think we also thought that the GOP leaders had enough balls to tell Trump to pound sand and we see where that got us.

Do I think that the military will help the coup? No. But there might be a couple broken arrows that attempt it.
