Re: POTUS 45.45: The Wall or a Shut Down. Your Choice Pelosi!!!!!!

Why are you trolling him...especially when you know he is right. I know plenty of people (and so do you btw) who would see the first number (1000 points) and think that is a bigger deal than the percentage. His point is completely valid yet you out of nowhere go off on him like he insulted your girlfriend or something.

And rufus how is what he said carrying water for Trump? That might be the most ridiculous statement I have seen not coming from Trump himself.

Huh. So the stocks are obviously fine, now. I mean, 1000?!?! That's insanely high! Oh wait. (not directed at you, Handy, this is in support of your post)

Your problem is you think t.v. represents most journalism. The talking heads on CNN/Foxes of the world are a tiny segment of journalism.

There is still a good deal of fact-based, thorough, well done journalism of all sorts out there. The problem is most people get most of their "news" nowadays from the infotainment shows on FOX and CNN masquerading as news. Then they supplement it with crap from their facebook feed and comments strangers leave on the handful of internet news articles they read. A few progressives then think that by listening to 25 or 30 minutes of NPRs morning or afternoon drive talking head programs they are then supplementing a well-rounded diet of news and information. It doesn't even really take a great deal of effort to learn the truth and have a sufficient understanding of most important stories, but many people are too lazy even for that. The problem is not a lack of quality journalism, it is far too many people not making the effort to absorb it.

Note: IMO, there is the lack of money to get the real journalism to the frontlines. It's buried behind all the BS that the mainstream media has, given their funding.

Again, I'd be careful with 'they're both bad'. CNN is fine. You just need additional sources. Fox is societal rat poison.

To be fair, with the exception of NPR and other publicly funded sources, they are selling their product to consumers who have developed the attention span of a toddler. Across the board--liberals, conservatives and independents. It's part of who we have become.

I completely agree we need to avoid the "they're both bad" trap, and that FOX is rat poison. I do not agree with the notion that CNN is "fine."

CNN was front and center when it came to the ratings porn trump was all during his run to winning in 2016. And since then, instead of spending any time on trying to inform people they are now part of the "trump is a bad dude" brigade. They are also one of the worst offenders around for feeling the need to show they are balanced by allowing a republican talking head on to lie as a means of balancing any news that might tend to make a democrat look good. The same thing with many other topics, such as climate change and finance. We don't need a climate change denier on every time the topic is brought up. And I can count on one hand with fingers left over how many times they focused on climate change as either helping to cause or exacerbate the severity of recent hurricanes and wild fires.

While CNN is clearly not FOX News or anywhere near as bad, they have a long way to go before they are doing a fine job of helping their viewers become well-informed consumers of news.

"The markets aren't that bad if you just look at the percentage drop, and not the actual points".

Another of his attempts to put lipstick on a pig, it's not that bad, it could be worse, the other side is just as bad, but I'm not a Trump supporter schtick.

Again, in what sort of alternative reality do you exist where you actually think this is the intent or desire of those networks? Are you really being fooled by the fact that they include the word "News" in their name?

It's like arguing that Pardon the Interruption is good at delivering sports news while Skip and Shannon Undisputed is bad at delivering sports news. Neither one of them are trying to deliver sports news. Yeah, it's possible you might learn some news about sports while watching one of those shows, but it's just as possible that you'll be mislead about some feature of sports while watching those shows as well.

All of the shows on Fox News, all of the shows on CNN, all of the shows on MSNBC, etc..., are not about delivering to you a clear, accurate, unadulterated statement of the news. They want to attract eyeballs, and whatever they can do to attract eyeballs (being loud and outrageous is a pretty tried and true method), they'll use. They want to put Rudy on, they want to put Nazi's on, they want to put Bernie on, because it'll make someone mad, and if it makes you mad you'll watch it.

Either watch those networks and understand that what you're getting is The Bachelorette without the hot tub scenes, and stop b--ching about them, or turn your tv to a movie channel and relax.

Trump says Turkey will take care of the rest of ISIS. They're next door.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">President <a href="https://twitter.com/RT_Erdogan?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@RT_Erdogan</a> of Turkey has very strongly informed me that he will eradicate whatever is left of ISIS in Syria....and he is a man who can do it plus, Turkey is right “next door.” Our troops are coming home!</p>— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href="https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1077064829825966081?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 24, 2018</a></blockquote>

Our main ally in that war was the Kurds. Turkey hates the Kurds.

Trump is a ****ing idiot.

I'm assuming this was a bone to Erdogan to get him to lay off the Khashoggi killing.

"I'll let you massacre the Kurds, just shut up about the Saudis."

24 hour news channels are basically journalistic fast food. Everyone has their favorite. It's food, but if you eat nothing but that, you'll get sick.

CNN offers a far more respectful platform than Fox...who's commentators shout down any liberal guest. Likewise CNN may have a slightly more liberal POV...Fox treats liberals as the enemies of the country. MSNBC focuses on facts...Fox on hyperbole and fear/anger. These are really not debatable.

I do not agree with the notion that CNN is "fine."

1) Before the election, CNN didn't give Trump positive press...it was rightly quite negative. Comey's indictment of Clinton a week before the election caused Trump to win...not CNN's criticism of Trump. CNN did its job by help getting rational voters to go for Clinton. The electoral college made it so the smear of Clinton mattered more than exposure to Trump's true nature.

2) If you're just looking for a one sided perspective (a liberal, fact-based Fox), watch Madow, Huffpo, etc

Truth is liberals and independents generally want a rather unbiased source of information. I know I do. I want the straight news and then I am smart enough to make the call from there. CNN has less bias than these other sources (i.e., MSNBC, Daily Beast)and has more cred than them among the broader society. That's why a straight up liberal radio station doesn't work. Secondly, liberals want to win a fair debate where there are multiple ideas - and they want to win, but by the rules. These reasons are why before Trump, MSNBC had much lower ratings than CNN. And will again when we get away from Trump and there is not nearly so much to unpack. CNN is the big tent media outlet.

Way back in 2015(?), a number of posters, on both sides of the aisle, wanted a smaller US military presence overseas.

What's changed?

I and many posters want less spending on stupid expenditures - like guns and bodies that sit around. We do support cyber security, etc. Most of us don't want lots of militiary adventures...but are open to force used when absolutely necessarily. Some of us don't mind playing tough with tyrants like Putin...but rather less so with 100 migrants in southern Mexico. None of this has changed.

Conservative posters on the site have changed. Those on the right may have wanted a reduced military in 2015 - this after wrongly selling us on the critical nature of an Iraq invasion and occupation for the previous decade plus. ISIS thanks you.

While I can't speak for them, I would assume the expediency of the withdrawal is the problem. There's no transition, no discussions with regional leaders; just a Tweet and a giant vacuum awaiting Russia, China, or someone else to step in.

We no longer have adults in the room while national security decisions are being made.

That's correct. It would be nice to know the decision was not like most of his 3:00 a.m. what would be good for me now decisions. Even the most deluded among us knows that Trump doesn't have the interest or discipline to be thoroughly prepared.

And a large number of his supporters just don't care.
