POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

Re: POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

These guys truly take the cake.

Nunes isn't going to use the House Intel Committee to investigate the links between the White House and Russia. He's going to use it to investigate how those links were discovered.

If you wrote this as a movie nobody would buy it. The true crime is the discovery of the crime! There is no more succinct demonstration of authoritarianism.

I think if Nixon and Watergate happened today, nothing would happen. I really do.

Re: POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

The worst, most outrageous, most insane lies the GOP hate machine came up with over the course of their 25+ year hit job on Hillary pale in comparison to the little truth that we know about 45's first less-than-a-month in office.

And there he is in the White House. We ARE a third world government

Nope.

And just like Watergate, there are going to be films made of this presidency, but they'll be more along the lines of Canadian Bacon and Spies LIke Us instead of All the President's Men

Re: POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

Here's my question, and I'll admit I'm not sure I have all of the details of the Flynn issue straight.

But the cliff notes version as I think I understand them are this. Obama sanctions Russia for whatever role it played in meddling in the election. On that same day Flynn speaks with a Russian diplomat.

Flynn speaks with the Russian diplomat about the sanctions. We know this because apparently U.S. intelligence agencies listened in on (and presumably recorded?) these conversations.

Questions are raised as to whether these conversations would be a violation of U.S. law that forbids citizens from discussing foreign affairs with foreign officials, without U.S. government permission (although apparently this law is used more as a political weapon, since lots of people have been accused of violating it but no one has ever been prosecuted for it).

Flynn lies, and says he didn't discuss sanctions, but since people were apparently listening this lie gets exposed.

So, my question is, what exactly was said during these conversations? If they were listened to, and it was confirmed that something about the sanctions was discussed, what was it? Did Flynn promise to review the sanctions when Trump took office?

Re: POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

Why we're going to win.

Because A students > B students.

Outside of a playground where you can actually use physical force, you should never pick a fight with somebody smarter than you. And for this president and administration, and their GOP enablers, that means they should never pick a fight with anybody.

Didn't you know about some of those other unAmerican EOs? Or didn't you know "(s)ix corporations own 90 percent of all media platforms in the U.S., effectively controlling the narrative, whether on foreign policy, legislation, or any goal fitting its needs." That's why I started looking more at Canadian and British news outlets (not sure if one-party ownership is any better in either of those).

Police: This man was found having illegally broken and entered the premises.

Defense attorney: Yes, but unless my client is actually proven to have stolen something of high val--

Judge: Are you joking?

Reality TV is all Trump knows, and this is the Greatest Show on Earth and he the ringmaster (with a life-sized poster of himself taped to his trailer door). And while the Guillibles and Deplorables watch the flying Trumps in open-mouthed wonder, the GOP boys are under the stands picking them clean. And those in downtown coffee houses *****ing about this farce of a show and claiming loudly and proudly that they will not be fleeced by this crook have not yet seen the special assessment taxes that are being imposed on them to cover the enormous contractor costs the Village continues to incur as long as the Clown Show is in town.

Watch the magician's other hand.

Or for those of you who've ever been to Europe (hand in air), be wary when "a local" stands at your side to talk to you and gesticulates with the hand in your field of view.

For costliness, Trump will never top Dubya's recession and wars.

The real cost so far has been to the reputation of America and the security of our democratic institutions. Trump has proven that the Republican party at least will tolerate anything from a president who has the same letter after his name. They've institutionalized partisanship and self-interest. Checks and balances won't work unless the officials in those slots are responsible, and this bunch at least are human garbage.

Maybe we're lucky in finding out now with such an incompetent dunce in the big chair, and we can build some more robust defenses against a dictator. Maybe we got lucky the demagogue wasn't smart and capable.

The other lesson is the right doesn't care about the Constitution. That's not news to many of us, but even the moderates should now realize that for conservatives government is just another tool they use to enrich themselves and selectively harass minorities, women, social liberals, gays, etc. It's a lesson the right teaches the world whenever and wherever it gains power, but it's always worth relearning it, and right now an entire new generation is getting a load at the reality behind conservative "small government" rhetoric.

Another thing we've learned: Paul Ryan is just another coward.

I actually used to think Ryan had integrity and just believed silly Randian nonsense. But no, it turns out he's just another conservative coward (if you're scoring at home, that makes... all of them) who willfully lies and deflects just to get what he wants.

Except, of course, the 4th Amendment. Talk bad about that, and all sorts of Constitutional words come out of their mouths.

(and money flows to personal arms makers)

I realize for you guys it's all about the "gotcha" and the catching people in lies. But if it comes out that Flynn's conversation with the Russians was something like, "Sorry to hear about those sanctions, but just be happy the Iron Maiden won't be taking office in three weeks", I'm going to be disappointed in you.

I just don't get it anymore. Do the righties on this board have anything to say about the people they have elected?

Re: POTUS 45.4 - What's a Battle?

You are absolutely right. The Republicans running congress will allow Trump to do anything he wants. Anything. In fact, Trump will do things that make Nixon's transgressions look positively legal and ethical over the next two years.

The only things left up for grabs will be will he have placed enough obstacles in the way of somewhat free elections so that a congressional check in the form of a different party controlling the House and Senate can become reality, and if so will the Rubes in Michigan and Ohio and Wisconsin and Pennsylvania (and in dozens of other states) be smart enough to notice that all those coal and steel and automobile manufacturing jobs that used to be the path to the middle class for millions and millions of Americans didn't actually come back and vote their actual wallets?

My guess is you ain't seen nothing yet. I wouldn't put it past this nation to be suffering another civil war once Trump's minions have had their way. There were plenty of people who didn't see the first one coming -- or didn't believe it when they should have -- despite the fact there were plenty of people a lot smarter than I am warning us of it in the 19th century. The next civil war by the way will come following the next world war, if there is any world left.
