POTUS 45.39: Dick Pictures for Everyone!!!!!!!

Anti-cooperative?
Dude, cooperatives are like one step from pure democracy and another step from socialist/collectivist.

I'm not anti-cooperative, but thinking they're more environmentally friendly, as a whole, than a heavily regulated IOU is frankly preposterous.

I'll also mention this from the consumer side, since I'm comfortable talking about that. My town is primarily served by an IOU with some of the lowest rates in the country. But the northern portion of my town falls into an REC's territory. Their unregulated rates are almost double what I pay to the regulated IOU.

Co-ops are not universal solutions to every problem.

I'm not saying panacea; coops have their problems, but at least they try* on their own. I'm saying I trust folks with skin in the game (cooperatives) more than a straight IOU.

*Try does not equal succeed obviously.

I'm the exact opposite, so long as the IOUs are actually regulated, because I recognize they'd do all sorts of shiat absent regulations.

No, you need something to charge the storage. Solar and wind become the "battery chargers" and the country runs on the storage tech.
Good grief - think before you type. If you have storage, then it's okay to have an episodic source like solar or wind. You don't need to "guarantee" that they are available 24/7 - that's the entire point of storage.

But yes, #3 is maddeningly elusive. But I do believe it's closer than you think. Say 50 years out in mass scale.
I hope you're right, for the sake of humanity. If I thought I'd be around to collect 50 years from now, I'd bet you a steak dinner on it. Probably the best I could have by then would be some strained beets or something... ;)

Re: POTUS 45.39: Dick Pictures for Everyone!!!!!!!

PS - That's not sarcastic; that's honest reality. Until we have storage to cover cloudy, calm days, we need baseline load providers.

But that does not mean that one should willingly choose coal over gas when given the CO2 outputs at the moment.

You are trying to suggest that since NG is eventually going to be targeted that coal should be allowed now, which is a horrible argument.

You give me a billion dollars to invest right now, will I put it into converting coal to NG? Nope. Building a new NG fired plant? Nope. Into storage technology. Yup. That's making a choice to ride our present generation mix until we can move to completely carbon-less. Not all may agree, but that to me is the best investment and I believe it'll provide the best return on investment for all.

What are you talking about? Where'd I say otherwise?

Re: POTUS 45.39: Dick Pictures for Everyone!!!!!!!

The part where you keep mentioning that the sun doesn't shine 24/7 is where you indicated otherwise.

Re: POTUS 45.39: Dick Pictures for Everyone!!!!!!!

The part where you keep mentioning that the sun doesn't shine 24/7 is where you indicated otherwise.

And that's exactly why I keep saying storage is the key. Did you miss that? All the solar in the world right now means nothing without storage for nighttime.

Fix the storage issue and you eliminate the "baseline load" (pro coal and pro nuclear) arguments and you solve the solar cycle ("night") and wind cycle (calm days) problems also.

Solve the storage issue and I'll gladly invest in solar and wind. Solar and wind tech is there already, but, today without storage you are literally generating electricity that can't be used or isn't there when you need it.

Still nothing from the Manafort jury.
I don't care the verdict, I just want to see the ensuing Tweet storm.

Popcorn. Stat! :D

OK...on board. Aren't you more frequently a GOP voter?

I think on issues for myself, thank you.

And on this I'm a pragmatist. A carbon-managed future is coming. I'll ride with the present generation resources mix because the energy storage tech we need is coming. It just is. Just look at a phone battery today versus the 1980s. To me a big NG conversion now is putting resources to an interim solution, a patch. Put the money into getting the storage issue solved and we're in a much better place.

When the energy storage we need is practical the carbon-based energy past becomes a campfire story*.

*Catch the irony there? ;) :D

Does your thinking include the fact that these days, party affiliation tells you more about how the candidate will govern if elected than pretty much anything else? McCain's vote on health care was so dramatic precisely because party line votes are the norm.

OK. So why don't we take our alternatives (solar, wind, etc) to what they're capable of with what batteries we have today? Europe has a vastly higher percentage coming from renewables - and their energy markets appear to be functioning just fine.

We should be pressing on on all fronts - including alternative installations. We are far less likely to charge forward on batteries if adjacent technologies aren't proactively pushed to the limit and beyond. The US didn't just wait for pc or mobile phone or <...>-related technologies to be developed. Arguably the most powerful private special interest in the world seem to be the glaring difference between alternatives and other sizable tech industries...and the US and Europe.

The labels are just noise. Show me the actions.

You point to Sen McCain; I'd point to Sen Heitkamp (D-ND) and her better than A- NRA rating. You don't see that from most Ds.

Today we don't have batteries anywhere near the scale to handle today's solar and wind.

Wind and solar are already second, third, generation technologies. Large scale (power plant scale) storage is in infancy.

Solve storage.

Heitkamp is a D in a solid red state. Of course she's going to be on the conservative end of her party.

She's still less likely to vote with Trump than any single Republican party member. Put another way, replace her with generic Canadia South Republican, and her 55% turns into 95% based on party label alone.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/congress-trump-score/

Sort by the Trump Score column. Collins and Paul are the only Republicans below 80% agreement with Trump. Collins barely so, and Paul's disagreements are often because Trump's positions aren't conservative enough.

Yeah, but you don't have to live with her campaign ads where she's touting how much she has voted ( " ... >50%!" ) with Trump.

That said, the more Cramer (Heitkamp's opponent) opens his yap the more I'm leaning toward Heidi. I can't stand to be in a room with Cramer. He oozes ignoramus.
