As bad as things have been at times in our country, I have never lived in a time this bad and with this much potential to be dangerous. We are as polarized as we have ever been, especially when one stops to consider we should be a better informed and more sophisticated consumer of news in 2018 than we were in say, 1860. A sizeable chunk of our population believes nothing reported in the mainstream press about the president. NOTHING. They are hopelessly deluded. That's what worries me the most. It's like trying to explain anything at all about math to someone who is absolutely convinced that 2 times 4 equals 7789.9, and nothing you show or tell them will convince them 2 times 4 equals 8. Where do you even begin?

Sure as sh-t wasn't liberals, or Democrats.
But he did capture the hearts of a lot of Generally Angry people who were mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.
Hopefully those people will now react against him as the Establishment.

I think in the last 25 years or whatever people’s world/perspective has completely changed. It says a lot about our society that we spend more time reading about celebrities than important issues. At some point people need to get back in the real world. Much like you I’m not that bullish right now on our future, but think our problems are much deeper than Trump or people voting republican.

I would say we're in the middle of the worst two generations this country has ever produced (Silent Generation, Baby Boomers) having the votes to put likeminded bigots and people who'd like to get back to 1950 on social issues in power. If the left continues to sit out elections, these people will punch above their weight for the foreseeable future. If they don't they could end their disastrous reign starting in November as more liberal millennials are now the largest generation out there and Gen X is fairly liberal as well.

Keep in mind the boomers were not adults in the 50s and have no reason to want to return there. None of my boomer friends would think of wishing such a thing. That is precisely what many of us revolted against. It is one thing to suggest that boomers have dropped the ball in holding off big money interests during the change from a manufacturing economy to a service economy, but to suggest that we want to return to the social climate of the 50s is unsupported as far as I can see, biased as I admittedly am.

Last year in Germany I sat next to a German woman on my flight from AMS to Munich. We had an interesting discussion about trump. I told her both I and most of my friends despise the man. She was mostly curious about how it happened and what the feelings are about him. Super nice about it.
I think I apologized to her lol.
But that was all before this trade war bull****. Things that actually affect people.
