When I challenge Christians on supporting The Donald (of mammon-worshipping, multiple wives, beauty pageant, casino, and reality TV fame), the answer is usually that they don't care about his obvious lack of morality, as long as he will earn their votes with conservatives on the court and by rolling back regulations.

You should read the Comments on stories about Trump's various religious poses ("Two Corinthians"!). There's an entire army of brainwashed Christianists out there who believe Gawd!!! is working through Donald and that he's a chosen vessel. It would be scary if it wasn't so pathetic. It dovetails perfectly with the strongman worship of a third of the country and the deep emotional desire of the right to see our democracy swept away by some sort of halfas-sed technicolor Wrath of Jehovah.

The whole idea that even one religious person falls for Trump saying he's religious is the funniest part of this entire tragicomedy.

Donald Trump believes in God even less than I do.

This would make perfect sense if you overlook the fact that the evangelical Christian voter is behind trump virtually 100%.

To steal the title from the Norman Ornstein/Thomas Mann book, I am finding it is even worse than it looks. We have become a society that is almost completely divided into two groups, the ones who believe what is provable and demonstrable, and those who believe what the political far right tells them to believe. trump calls himself both a Christian and a republican, so republicans far and wide take that gospel to the bank. He spoke in Youngstown Ohio last night. Youngstown as most know is a poster child of the rust-belt. One of his lines was about the shuttered factories that are so prevalent in the Mahoning Valley. About those 1000s and 1000s of lost jobs he said "they're all coming back." That's a quote, he said "all." And I guarantee every one of the 7000 or so who heard him speak live believed it. Just like they believed the Sun was gonna set in the West and rise in the East. And nothing that anyone said to any of them would cause them to believe otherwise. And when those jobs don't come back? Then they'll believe the next thing trump (or whoever will be speaking for the extreme far right) says about how it is the democrats fault.

I am dying for someone to articulate a solution to the simple problem that people on the right simply no longer believe ANYTHING that doesn't have the right's seal of approval. With every passing day this whole thing just looks worse and worse. What's most sad to me is some of these people who cling to what trump says, if they had any brains or hope, might not be a "deplorable" in the Hillary sense of the word. They are truly the rubes and dupes that trump thrives on. They just don't see it. You could almost hear the contempt trump actually has for them in his voice last night. He knows he is full of it, and nearly every thing he says is a lie. And he also knows he is laughing all the way to the bank. Until the Russians actually come calling some day.

Since Newt. The religious right followers in Reagan's time were sincere. Their leaders weren't -- Robertson, Falwell et al. were just businessmen who had found their racket. And Reagan of course wasn't, he used to laugh at the rubes when they left his office. But the mob was full of the holy spirit and while they may have been dumb they believed sincerely that The Actor was a godfearin' man.

It was with Newt and '94 that this wave of religious Tatuffery started to infect the followers too. That's when it became about giving the middle finger to all "those smartypants with their nice houses and successful kids and decent dental hygiene who think they're bettern' us."

Daniel Dale (@ddale8) (Washington correspondent for the Toronto Star) has been on his game the last few nights. Been seeing a lot of Twitter people retweeting his posts. He absolutely breaks down Trump's Youngstown, Ohio excursion last night.

I may have to start following him myself.

Listening to the rhetoric that former speaker newt spewed on NPR this morning, it really makes me think there is a lot of substance behind the investigation.

A LOT.

He spent most of his time accusing the Justice Dept for being massively liberal, and then even more liberal than that. It's an interesting thing to listen to.

I actually found it painful to listen to. Both because Gingrich is so woefully stupid and predictable in his bashing of the left, but it was also painful because I thought the NPR host was completely unprepared to do her job pushing back on what Gingrich was saying. Her follow ups were almost comical in their lack of focus. She let him ramble on when it was obvious he had nothing of substance to say. She basically turned the segment into a forum on how even the Justice Dept was overrun with liberal traitors. While I'd like to believe most of the NPR listening audience can hear the actual truth and took Gingrich's comments for what they were worth (nothing, since you couldn't wipe your butt with them) I'm not so sure of anything anymore, let alone who can think critically enough to understand what it logical and true.

Just heard that the transgender thing this morning was to appease a Republican who was putting a "no funding" (operations, drugs, etc. for transition while in the military) for Transgender people amendment into a Border Wall funding bill. Which was going to kill that bill. So, Trump threw the entire Transgender community under the bus for the wall.

Obviously. Fascists de-legitimize democratic institutions so they can bypass and then eliminate them. We are watching a slow-motion coup d'etat, and our friends on the right side of the aisle will be absolutely no help in stopping it. They won't actively cheer it on, but they'll shut their eyes and deny it's happening, and when that is absolutely impossible they will shrug and say "what can you do?" and "your side would have done it, you're just mad that we're just doing it first."

Democracy dies by suicide, not homicide. The Republicans could stop this in its tracks right this instant. But they have things they want to get out of it so they are content to allow it to go on.

They haven't figured out that when the dust settles they won't be in power any more than we are. The folks who are engineering this takeover are not their friends or allies any more than they are ours. This is just the powerful finally doing with away with all limitations on enslaving the powerless.

If a Michigan man and an Golden Domer can find things to agree on, maybe there's hope for the world yet. By the way, I can't wait to begin playing some familiar opponents again. As a COLLEGE HOCKEY fan, I appreciated the history of the Hockey East opponents, but most of NDs hockey fans are just too casual and football centered to recognize quality opponents when they don't come with a name brand.

God help us if the only way to stop this is with a revolution. If there is one, we better get it over with quickly, because very soon the military is going to be run by people who think JUST LIKE the way trump followers think. Right now there might be a shred of sanity left in the Pentagon. The left used to condemn those on the right who questioned a liberal's patriotism, but sadly that's what I am doing with the republicans in congress. They should be ashamed by their lack of patriotism. As much as people hate comparing dump with Adolf, it sucks that we are just repeating Europe 1932 again. Hopefully, it will be far more England 1936, where they were rebuffed far more than in Germany- as the tactics were identical.

It makes me cringe a lot when a top level, ELECTED, politician is so in with this destruction of our democracy. Granted, he got his head handed to him on a platter by the rest of the country- but for him to turn his back on us that badly is horrific.

Even here, people want to stop the russian investigation because no person in the dump campaign was involved- BUT THIS IS MORE THAN JUST COLLUSION, you idiots. So for little newt to down play it that aggressively sucks, too.

Reading comments under columns is something I consciously avoid doing for my own sanity, and because only some unknowable fraction of them are sincere anyway, and the others are trolling in one way or another. But I'm happy to take your word for it that there are fake christians out there who admire Trump's occasional clumsy swipes at religiosity. I'm glad I haven't met them.

I'm holding out hope that within a decade, Trumpism will have generated an overall positive result for the country. First, if he wasn't so devastatingly "tempered by incompetence", he would be doing a lot more actual structural damage which couldn't be undone. Second, activism among smart, caring people is way, way up over the past year and informing a new generation of civil servants who are aware of what could go wrong and will be far more serious-minded about politics than we gen-Xers have been.
There are some very big ideas taking root and gaining popularity that would've seemed silly a couple of years ago. Direct democracy. Single payer. State-level climate change mitigation. Cal-exit will probably be on the ballot next year. Overall I see people waking up to the fact that the federal government is not the capable and kindly Uncle Sam they assumed, and that individual hard work is called for to face our societal challenges.

I know that, but the problem here is it's actually happening. The right would wail "tyranny" whenever they didn't get 100% of what they wanted. People turned them off because they were patently absurd little b-tches who felt anything that came out of their head was Divine Law.

This situation is different. This is a president trying to gut the balance of powers and a political party playing along to forward their interests. And the first tool they are going to use is the disenfranchisement of the people to prevent themselves from being swept out of office. That is a direct and lethal attack on democratic government. It's Putin 101. Forget Mussolini or Hitler or those gawdy precursors. This is what has happened in other places in the last few decades when a dictator aided by an entrenched interest destroys a democracy.
