Due to the massive renovations to Maxcy Hall the Bears will be playing on the road alot for the upcoming season. In fact, I got a "sneak peek" at the upcoming schedule. Finally, the Bears will be playing Morrisville on the Saturday portion of the schedule. All is well...:D

It was reported in the local newspaper today that the Bears could play some home games at the Massena Arena. Its a nice facility and would be very convient for traveling teams as there are many hotels in Massena. And NO, its not the arena at the mall.

Maybe Ian Boots's uncle will make it to some games ;)

Seriously though - Two former SUNY Potsdam hockey players have been selected for induction into the Bears Hall of Fame. Howie Vandermast '88 and Nate Sunday '98 will be inducted as the Hall of Fame's Class of 2012 on July 14.

Easy there Norm, I am friends with Ian's relatives. :) Plus I dove outta the way a few times from Nate Sunday's slapper in men's league. Now there's a guy with a bomb.

Very good choices. Howie is the only Potsdam player to be drafted by the NHL (Islanders). Nate may have a rocket of a shot, but Howie's was supersonic.

Vandermast was a good one for sure. Probably the Bears best D-man ever. Aside from Bell, Naughton and Denis Marcoux he was probably their best player ever.

What exactly are they doing to Maxcy Hall?

thats gotta hurt recruiting not having any home games for a year. The end result might be good and could help with recruitign but short term its tough. Guess you have to do it

They will have "home" games. Just not at Maxcy. Most likely at Clarkson, the local town rink, and apparently maybe Massena. The latter might actually bring out the most fans to root for them.

Romney had wire fence for glass back in '82, not too long before you were there.

Interesting discussion going on here. The renovations at Maxcy are absolutely necessary, if you don't believe me ask Mr. Jaslow about the Geneseo game 2 years ago. The best player ever at Potsdam? I do not intend to disrespect Howie Vandermast, but I would vote for Steve Naughton anyday. With that I pose this question, has anyone ever seen a player single handily beat Plattsburgh by himself? Game, set, match. :D

I've seen a Cardinal goalie or two accomplish this :eek::p

I found the wire fence was quite helpful when scaling the wall to yell at refs and opposing players '73-'77...which was also a quick way to get tossed from a game (as a spectator...)

Interestingly, I was having this very same discussion with my wife last night. I mentioned the previous post which stated about four names as the best players ever at Potsdam. I then told her, "Can't disagree with any of them. And no doubt, Steve Naughton was the best of them all." And I saw all those players on that list in person, especially Denis Marcoux who I went to school with.

Howie was just a bit before my time as far as following Bears hockey. Interesting note, I was conversing with a friend of mine the other day about all of this talk of Naughton, VanderMast, and Sunday. He was telling me a story about when Howie was was assisting the Potsdam High School team back in the early 90's. Apparently, Howie took a slapshot from the blueline on one of the goalies, and it was a blocker save. However, his shot was so hard that it nearly rendered the blocker useless as the goalie ended up bruising his hand. Ok, now that's a slapper.
