Players to participate in NCAA/Olympics/NHL in the same season

So, an interesting question came up in a discussion amongst a group I participate in on Facebook. Has there been any players prior to this year who participated in the NCAA/Olympics/NHL in the same season? Obviously we know Ryan Donato did it first this year, followed by Troy Terry and Jordan Greenway.

It'd have to be prior to 1998, when the NHL began sending their guys. My first possibility was 1980, but they played with the International team only leading up to Olympics. Paul Kariya didn't play with Anaheim until the following season.

Anybody have any idea if it's been done before?

Doesn't appear to be in the same season.

Bowling Green's Ken Morrow was close. He played at BG in 1979 and the olympics in 1980. After the olympics he signed and played with the Islanders winning the first of 4 Stanleu Cups.

Ya, there would have been numerous guys from the '80 team, had they not played together as the Olympic team leading up to the games.

Further looking seems to show the same for the '84 and '88 teams as well.

Up until the NHL started participating in the Olympics,I believe Morrow was the only player to win both a gold medal, and the Stanley Cup in the same season.

Re: Players to participate in NCAA/Olympics/NHL in the same season

Playing in all 3 in the same season kind of sounds interesting, but it would require the Olympic team to be assembled late, or for the player to be brought in late, and then for the players college team not to be a winner, in order to have time to go play for their NHL team as well. Would probably be a wild and crazy and maybe fun year for the player, but doesn't seem possible for there to be much winning going on? Maybe the NHL team might go on to win the SC, but rarely do Olympic teams that are assembled late go on to win Gold.

Far more interesting to me, is has anyone WON an NCAA title, an Olympic Gold Medal, and an NHL Stanley Cup Title?

Morrow was the first, but there have been a couple others since then. I know for sure Jonathan Toews, Brent Seabrook, and Duncan Keith from the Blackhawks in 2010 (only because I lived in Chicago during that time).

Hence the reason I said "up until the NHL started participating.

sure, an easy one

Broten is one of a few players to have played on teams that won the NCAA hockey championship (University of Minnesota in 1979), the Olympic Gold Medal (Team USA, 1980), and the Stanley Cup (New Jersey Devils, 1995). He is the only player to have won the Hobey Baker, the Olympic Gold Medal and the Stanley Cup.

unless you mean in the same year?

Correct. The next ones to do it were Yzerman and Shanahan in 2002, well after NHLers started playing in the Olympics.

we all know ken morrow went from winning a gold medal, straight to winning four stanley cups.

I sure wish they would go back to forming the team in the fall and playing an exhibition/international schedule leading up to the olympics. I don't like having NHL players in the olympics, but they should be able to take a leave of absence from their NHL contracts to play on the olympic team all year if they choose to do so. It would be fun to follow the olympic teams for a couple months leading up the the Olympic tournament.

yes, but the thing that sucked was that if you were a fan of a team that actually had Americans on it, every 4 years you would lose your best players, while some of your rivals didn't. a team like Denver never had to worry, while a team like Minnesota or one of the Bostons would be stripped.

that said, I liked the days of amateurs way more than the NHL, and the teams that played a while together had an identity.

But losing them for one year was not as bad as underclassmen leaving to sign a pro contract. Blue chip players are always a flight risk.

but the pro contract hits everyone with good players, the Olympic years only hit some teams. and, almost none of the players came back.

Re: Players to participate in NCAA/Olympics/NHL in the same season

Yeah, but it hits some FAR MORE than others. An example of this is that there are as Many former Gophers in the NHL right now, as there are former players from all of the other 4 Minnesota based schools COMBINED. UMn has 25, SCSU, UMD, BSU & Mankato combined have 25. And apparently the former Gophers are much better, too, as the 20 former Gophers who have scored have scored well over DOUBLE what the 20 former players from those other 4 have scored, and if you only look at players that left early, it might be as much as TRIPLE.

566 to 220. UMn's #s would only drop to 558 if you looked only at those who left school early. I doubt the other 4 schools can say the same.

So, just like how the Olympics hurts certain teams more than others, especially the Gophers and BC who stocked far more Americans than other schools did, the same can be seen with what the NHL is doing to college hockey blue bloods.

And hence why the Gophers have so many more players inducted in the US Hockey Hall of Fame than other programs as well. So we may not have been rewarded in the NCAA Tourney, but the U of Mn has been rewarded in other ways. And not only the US Hockey has recognized these great contributions to hockey in general, but having 3 former Gophers inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame while almost no other college can claim more than maybe 1, also shows other ways that UMn has been rewarded.

But yes, still frustrating for fans of college hockey that have to suffer so that the Olympic teams and the NHL can benefit.
