Plattsburgh vs. Potsdam

Re: Plattsburgh vs. Potsdam

so do we have the "behind the bench" yet?:)

Kinda interested in hearing what Coach Emery has to say about the Potsdam game on "Behind the Bench" Monday night. He was "unavailable to the media for comment after the game" , which is rather unusual for him.

Re: Plattsburgh vs. Potsdam

Yeah. He said he kept the team until around 12am, not as a punishment, but rather as a way to let them see why they "lost the game" so they don't do it again. (Emery started out by saying he's had some losses that didn't hurt as bad, and this was the first time in his 600+ games he was up 3-0 and didn't win.)

He admitted that the leaders did not lead, and the team did not approach the game with the right attitude. In fact, he pinned this "loss" primarily on that attitude. (The #1 Ranking is "the kiss of death") He also acknowledged that Potsdam played very well. "We had more neutral-zone turnovers in that game than we did in the last 6 games combined."

They once again went on bashing the "online experts" who put the blame on Leis. Emery said Leis didn't stand a chance on either of the first 2 Potsdam goal - one being an open-net rebound, and the other being a mistake by defenseman MacLeod - and that Leis is still a good goaltender.

Re: Plattsburgh vs. Potsdam

Both Leis and Williams looked very good in the PrimeLink.

they are both very good goalies who still need some "tuning" to get their game to the top level. the problem is, some Plattsburgh "faithful" think that Leis is a bum who should be on the bench and the guy who hasn't seen any action other than the exhibition game should be ahead of him.

Yeah, I heard something to the effect of...'the only ice Leis should see is the ice in his glass'..

I think the problem is, some Plattsburgh "faithful" are a bit spoiled. Someone like Hince doesn't come too often, and I totally agree, Leis and Williams both need some "tuning" to get their game to top level. They both have the talent. Experience will help them greatly, and they are getting it this year.

Re: Plattsburgh vs. Potsdam

I wouldn't trust the judgement of the "faithful" over the coach that has been here for 20 years anyway. Williams and Leis are both freshmen. Leis looked much more nervous in his first game than Williams did, prompting this "let's bury Leis on the bench" talk, if anyone remembers, Leis stood on his head the third period of his first game. I don't think either one of them has distinguished himself as a top-notch Div III goaltender yet. I don't think either of them are practice-time goaltenders either. I think both can be Div III All-Americans. Since neither is the next coming of Nik Sundberg (who by the way didn't blow us away his freshman year either...), plattooning them is the best course of action. If for no other reason, than if one decides to leave, the coaching staff isn't left with the cupboard bare like someone else did who shall remain nameless...

While I agree wholeheartedly on Leis and Williams, I just wanted to point out that Sundberg did more or less hit the ground running (hit the ice skating?): his freshman year saw him post the .946 SV% that stood as a DIII record until Kyle Jones' senior performance, and I distinctly remember questioning at the time (probably on HOCKEY3 rather than here, but certainly somewhere) Emery's decision to tap Erbsland for both quarterfinal games at Norwich. Of course, in hindsight Emery's judgment back then seems pretty sound as well: Erbsland kept his team in both games against a Cadet squad that thoroughly outgunned and out-Aucoined them in general.

I'm no expert, but I sit right behind the visitor's goal for 2/3 of the game, and I thought that Leis looked quite sound against Midd in the Primelink, and I didn't see that Williams was that much better. The other thing is that indeed Erbsland did a heck of a job against the Cadets in that series. I always thought Erbsland was kind of underrated by the Cardinal Faithful

Re: Plattsburgh vs. Potsdam

Not sure if this should go here, but I just returned from watching former Potsdam player Chris Lee play for Wilkes-Barre Scranton (AHL) against the Crunch. Lee tallied a PP goal and an assist, but also got his clock cleaned by a right hand during a skirmish. It was nice to see a former DIII player in action at this level though, and I thought he played really well. Here's hoping that one day he can actually play a game at the NHL level (instead of being called up and sent down the next day!).
