Plattsburgh State Hockey 2016-17 - Bob's Head Coach Season 28

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2016-17 - Bob's Head Coach Season 28

Comparing the Men's and women's schedules to start to try to figure out which games I will be attending each weekend this coming season... and I just noticed that Saturday 11/19/2016 is an Oswego @ Plattsburgh double-header, with the Women playing at Stafford Ice Arena at 3pm, and the Men following them up in the 7pm time slot. Cardinal and Laker fans, take note!

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2016-17 - Bob's Head Coach Season 28

I am guessing that since Norm has not posted in here nobody else has got an email about their season tickets. The other thing is has anyone heard about any transfers? Recruit announcements usually don't come this late and since we do not have a goalie recruit I am assuming a transfer is coming in, right now our backup is an untested Sophomore.

Nothing on the 2016-17 Season Tickets, but this came in today (6/22/16) -

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2016-17 - Bob's Head Coach Season 28

looks good had a nice regular season, but didnt see the ice in 13 playoff games, never know until they get on the ice.
I agree you never know until they hit the ice, looks like the goalie that played the 13 playoff games Garrett Hughson came in near in January from playing the last few years in Major Junior for Spokane and Windsor and basically took over. That makes me feel better that it was not an injury related reason.

Hockey community mourns loss of Steve Hoar {By Joey LaFranca Special to the Press-Republican - 7/13/2016}

Longtime hockey coach and former Plattsburgh State men’s hockey coach Steve Hoar died Monday at his home in Arlington, Mass.

Becker College released a statement Tuesday formally announcing his death. No cause of death or age was released in the statement.

During his career as a head coach, Hoar tallied five seasons at Plattsburgh, four at Tufts University and 10 at Becker College, earning a 231-215-27 overall record.

After playing hockey at Boston College and serving as an assistant coach at Army West Point, Hoar began serving as Plattsburgh’s head coach in 1984.

While behind the bench for the Cardinals, Hoar notched a 131-48-2 record and secured three SUNYAC championships and one national title, which was revoked in 1990 by the NCAA Infractions Committee.

When Hoar arrived at Plattsburgh, the men’s hockey program was coming off its worst season in its history, finishing the year 16-18.

Hoar ended the program’s struggles quickly, though, leading the Cardinals to a 26-11 record and a SUNYAC championship.

Plattsburgh men’s hockey coach Bob Emery worked with Hoar for one season and said he displayed true dedication to the game of hockey and brought a winning atmosphere back to Plattsburgh.

“The program was successful in the early ‘80s, and then there were tough times, but Steve brought it back,” Emery said. “He had a tremendous work ethic, and he was an unbelievable motivator to the players.

“I was very fortunate to have worked with Steve for one season. He was a passionate guy and a really hard worker, and he really put a ton of effort into the job.”

One characteristic to Hoar’s coaching style was the caring attitude he displayed toward his players.

Chris Panek, who played for Plattsburgh for three seasons beginning in 1985, acknowledged how Hoar was a great motivator, leader and mentor to all he coached.

“He was just the kind of guy that you wanted to play well for,” Panek said. “When you didn’t get the job done for him, you felt bad. He was a player’s coach. He always had his players’ backs no matter what. He was always there for us.”

Panek, who won two SUNYAC championships and was a member of the 1986-87 national championship team under Hoar’s leadership, said there was always drive to improve as a player.

“He was a great hockey guy and a great motivator,” Panek said. “I know one of the mottos he had was, ‘Be better tomorrow than you were today.’ He instilled that in us every day.”

Panek noted he learned a lot from Hoar on and off the ice that he has used throughout his life.

He also said he appreciated Hoar giving him a chance to be a Cardinal.

“Being part of the program was an honor,” Panek said. “Plattsburgh has a really deep hockey tradition, and Steve was a big part of that. I know I will always be thankful to him that I got to be a student-athlete at Plattsburgh.”

Emery said Hoar set a precedent for Plattsburgh State hockey that he always tries to maintain.

“I was just fortunate enough to work with him,” Emery said. “He brought the national championship back to Plattsburgh in 1987. My goal every day is to keep the program at the level where he showed me where it should be.”

Cardinal Hockey Fans,

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of Cardinal Hockey. Whether you were a season ticket holder in the past or a current ticket holder for the upcoming season, I want you to know that your support for our program and our student-athletes is greatly appreciated.

Although I've only been in my current role as the Director of Athletics since July 1st, I have followed Cardinal Hockey for many years and it's very clear that Cardinal Country is home to the best college hockey fans in the country! Your support has been instrumental in creating a positive experience for our students while at the same time, playing a large part in making the opposing teams trips to Plattsburgh an incredibly intimidating task.

I would also like you to know that I am working with our staff to plan a "Fan appreciation night" for our season ticket holders. This event will be held around one of our home games and will be aimed at recognizing your commitment to our program. With an increase in home games along with hosting the Primelink Great Northern Shootout, the 2016-17 season promises to be an exciting and memorable one for Cardinal Hockey and I'm looking forward to meeting many of you along the way.

Enjoy the remainder of your summer and thank you again for your ongoing support.

Go Cards!
