Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Thanks for the clarification. I'm somewhat privy to the NYS funding mechanisms, and the outlook for the next couple of years appears to be as bleak (or worse) as the last few. It's a whole new world for NYS public institutions, especially if Washington decides to rework Medicaid reimbursement considering that NY is currently the largest suckler from this federal teat.

A state school (at least NY) have a harder time with funds. Some argue that the lower cost of tuition at a state school offsets the finacial backing aspect, but through private schools alumni funds/donations and aid packages thats not always the case. Again, by DIII rules its legal.

And then even with in the SUNY system different schools do different thimgs with their money. Imagine Elmira being told you can not give out foreign finacial aid to foreign students. On top of that we are going to cut your hockey budget in half. I think any team would have players leaving. With the state budget like it is and tuition going up and up, it wouldnt shock me to see more leave....there were a lot of recent players who left for that reason, yet people want to blame Emery. From the outside looking in, yes it a red flag, but when you sit down and know why most of these players have left its anything but Emerys doing. Yet "some" people want nothing more then to try and put down Emery and Plattsburgh when they have no clue why and what happened.

PSUCHAMPS, you and Emery seem close are you guys related? lol All seriousness though Plattsburgh does have an easier time than most d3s do with the exception of only a few. Number 1 its a state school with a good international package. Number 2 its a STATE school and emery can basically get anyone in there and Number 3 they have one of the best arenas in D3. I think they may miss out on recruits to Norwich, Oswego which have been more successful and have nicer arenas. Packages seem to be better at Oswego from what I understand. I think guys are leaving b/c they are unhappy. The reasons Im sure are all different, but I wouldn't point fingers at any one thing. Im just stating that people seem to leave at an alarming rate lately and Platts did have a bad year in conference.

Did you miss the part where I said Plattsburgh went through a period where there was ZERO international aid, or pretty close to it??

If you want to compare Plattsburgh with Brockport as far as aid I will agree, hense why I said the perenial powers.

2) if you think other "private schools" don't work their magic when getting "the" recruit when it comes to admissions you are only fooling yourself.

3) again, yes its a state school, yes tuition is lower....however private schools have much larger contribution and much more free reign on thier tuitions then a state school. We've hashed this over and over for years. A lot of times a private school can come close to a state schools tuition for their students. It happens, legally.

4) yes I do respect Bob. You say we must be related yet you seem to know all these players are leaving because they are unhappy. Did you talk with Cody? Matt? Ryan? Kevin? Peiere-luc? Bryan? Joey? Mike? Casey? Ryan? Jason? Maybe some of us who follow this team, socialize with the players have.....again, maybe you do with your crystal ball that tells people what they are going to be when they grow up so they don't change majors or go to school only to get a call from someone offering them a job outside of hockey.

5) now if by meaning uphappy, as in wanting to play, then yes some have left for that reason. A lot actually. Again I go back to the transition from juniors to D3. Some guys dont and Emery brings in the best talent he can every year. Should he say "hey, (players name) didnt transition as well as we hoped...lets not recruit anyone better then him so he can still play." Sorry doesnt happen at top schools. So....like I said Emery helps these players who want to play NOW, and not ride the pine, find different homes where they can be everyday players. I guess maybe he should keep them on the roster, only to have them get cut the next year right??

Like I said you believe what you want, you're the one with the crystal ball and able to speak with everyones whos left Plattsburgh....

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Why has Plattsburgh not won a national championship? Goaltending. While we have had moments of good goaltending (and despite the commentators on here, Hince's performances were good at its best) we have never had great goaltending that wins national championships. We didn't get beat by St. Norbert 4 years Neumann 3 years and Norwich 2 years ago by there four lines, we played Norwich and Norberts very even, we dominated Neumann. We got beat because our goaltending was weak and lacked that last step to a championship.

We have had some dominant teams (especially 08-09) but have we had a dominant goalie since Sundberg?

As for international - I know for a fact that International students receive free housing thru 4 years at SUNY plattsburgh. Its about 10 grand for room and board these days. This makes it a few thousand dollars more than a NY resident but not that much more. Hope this helps

As someone who's career is in Admissions...I can tell you that being a state school has little/nothing to do with 'being able to get anyone in.' Never did understand the perception that state schools were somehow 'dumber' or 'easier to get in.' Let's take a look at two DIII hockey 'power schools.' (This is not me picking on Elmira, just the first private school that came to mind).

http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=3787&profileId=1#

You'll notice that Elmira accepts 82% of its applicants while Oswego accepts 47% of its applicants. I can promise you that being a state school or private school does not ensure that a coach can get 'anyone in' that they want. (Note: This statement is made concerning DIII sports....the possible corruption that occurs at DI is another discussion.)

Know for a fact that international students receive free housing? Try going here and hypothetically say you are from China and have a 70 GPA with a 300 SAT Math and a 300 SAT Critical Reading Score. See how much your estimated cost of attendance would be....

Oh I guess I misread the first quote where you said International Students...I guess International Students = Candians playing hockey...I wonder what 'the asians' would be called since clearly they do not fall under the umbrella of "International Students"

haha Seriously? This is a college hockey board isnt it? Why would I talk about the non hockey players, our convo was about the internationals on Plattsburgh"s hockey team, which do not always have to be canadian, but mostly are. Pretty sure there haven't been any asians on the Plattsburgh team, but when they get one we will have to ask them.

If it makes you feel better....try that page and put in Canada instead of China...

lol I am not trying to argue with you, I am not stating opinion. I have heard this from many different people in the know. Im sure many others on this board are well aware of this as well.

Financial aid cannot be preferential for athletes over any other group of students, or for one sport over another. Thus the international student from China should receive the same financial aid/cost of attendance as a hockey player from Canada. If that is not the case, then there is a violation of DIII regulations. All one has to do is look at what happened to Genesseo and Buffalo State for an example of problems with international financial aid packaging

I'm not arguing about whether or not all the current international hockey players at Plattsburgh receive a $10,000 international scholarship...I don't know if that is true or not....but to make a blanket statement that all international students receive $10,000 to attend Plattsburgh is simply false.

And you may very well be correct that all of the current international hockey palyers at Plattsburgh receive $10,000. But how would you know this for a fact? The only way would be for every one of those student athletes to show you their financial aid award. If they simply told you that they did, then that is heresay and not fact. Also, if you found out through another medium, then that is also heresay and could quite possibly be in violation of FERPA.

You are really off the mark on this one, buddy. You are right. You don't know the reasons so it is best that you not speculate so much and look for someone to blame, principlely, the coach. As, for the year in conference, I can't think of a better end to one than winning the SUNYAC, can you? Make a visit to financial aid office. Maybe they can give you the correct info. you need.

Ok guys im not gonna comment on anything, whether you think plattsburgh has the best d3 team or the worst or u think emery is scotty bowman or rick bowness... the only thing i am sure about as i have heard first hand is that the canadians live on campus for free, and frequently live in the dorms all 4 years for this reason. no need to get hostile or anything like that im just trying to state facts and this is a fact. good night

I'm excited to see what Mathieu Cadieux has to offer the team. I've heard good things about him, but I've also noticed his junior stats were average. Leis improved over the season last year (minus giving up some soft ones at times) and with this addition I'm hoping something can be salvaged in terms of above average quality goaltending.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

So defensive. Tell me which one of you is Emery? The SUNYAC is chock full of Canadians there has to be a reason. How many Canadians play for Boston College? You Kool Aid drinkers need to get out more. Plus they are all 21 year old freshman. So much for the "college experience" . They are ready for Social Security by the time they graduate. Then what do they do? What kind of degrees do they have.? Go ahead and check. I will bet you most don't even have degrees. It's a joke and It's not just Plattsburgh. Oswego might as well be in Ontario.

If you want all your tax money going to support Canadian hockey players that's fine with me. But it seems to me Roll did a pretty good job with a lot of Americans a few years ago. If Americans are good enough for BC they should be good enough for Oswego. Why don't these guys play in the CIS, I'm sure it's better than D3. The level of play in all strata of hockey is now light years above what it was 20 years ago. Don't tell me you can't find good players right here in NY State. Don't tell me you support anything your $ 4.00 dollar tickets, either, you barely pay for the lights.

These programs are all supported by New York State taxpayers. Even more galling is the fact that the bulk of the tax revenue comes from NY city and the suburbs and they have to make do with "club hockey" teams. Governor Cuomo should launch an investigation into this wanton waste of taxpayer money to "entertain" 4 or 5 thousand people in upstate NY.:mad:
