Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2010-11 - "We still have to fine tune some things..."

I'd be in favor of it. Especially now that we've gone to the single-game format rather than the two-game series and best-of-three games championship series.

That would be awesome!

(1) Oswego
(8) Potsdam/(9) Brockport

(4) Plattsburgh State
(5) Morrisville

(3) Buffalo State
(6) Fredonia

(2) Geneseo
(7) Cortland

"We have zero idea." - Bob Emery in reference to the coaching staff's idea on who will start in net on Wednesday night.

This was from this evening's episode of Behind the Bench. I thought it was worthy enough to post on here.

I assumed there was some question - indicated by both guys playing on Friday. That said, you really think they have "zero idea" this late in the game? I would be shocked. Of course that would make this the first time in sports history that a coach has been coy with the media......

Assuming I'm still in the FHL playoffs, I hope so. My other goalie is likely to be sitting.

Like Ducky mentioned...Bob has unintentionally started a goalie controversy.

Do I think the team plays more confident in front of Williams? Yeah.

Regardless, I'm sure Leis will start in net tomorrow night. I'm fine with it. I think he'll be alright.

I'm here at Memorial Hall for the basketball game.

Only about 30 or 40 students. I can only hope we get more support tomorrow night.

Cards get edge on Morrisville - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/23/2011}

Being the fourth seed in this year's State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament wasn't what the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team was looking for heading into the 2010-11 season.

But, it could have been worse had it not been for what happened last weekend in Morrisville.

The Mustangs had a golden opportunity to be home in the opening round of the SUNYAC Tournament, but dropped home games to Buffalo State (3-0) and Fredonia (6-5 in overtime) to fall to No. 5.

Morrisville's loss was Plattsburgh State's gain as the Cardinals (17-1-1, 9-7) jumped ahead of the Mustangs (11-12-1, 8-7-1) in the standings will host Morrisville tonight at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals at the Stafford Ice Arena.

"There are a lot of good teams in our conference and our record is indicative of that," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "But, I wouldn't have thought we were going to lose four conference games at home this season.

"It's really nice to be home in the opening round because if you're successful in the the first game, you move on to the road. If you were at home for the first game, you would have to go right back on the road.

"We had our best crowd at the Potsdam game and we're hoping the students come out to make it a great atmosphere."

The other quarterfinal has No. 3 seed Buffalo State (12-10-3, 8-5-3) entertaining No. 6 seed Fredonia (12-12-1, 7-8-1). Top-seeded Oswego (22-3, 13-1) and second-seeded Geneseo (16-7-2, 10-5-1) have first-round byes.

The Cardinals and Mustangs split regular season meetings, with Caylin Relkoff's goaltending preserving Morrisville's 3-2 win in Plattsburgh on Nov. 13. Plattsburgh State then skated to a 6-2 victory in Morrisville on Feb. 5.

The Cardinals closed out their regular season last Friday with a 9-2 home win over Potsdam.

Plattsburgh State has 11 players with 10 points or more, led by Eric Satim (12-19-31), Dylan Clarke (16-13-29), Kyle Kudroch (11-9-20) and Patrick Jobb (10-9-19).

Either Josh Leis (14-4-1, 2.44 gaa) or Ryan Williams (3-2-0, 2.45 gaa) will get the call between the pipes tonight.

"We have to keep the puck out of our net and play good defense," said Emery. "We have to be prepared to win the game, 1-0. It may not end up 1-0, but we have to ready for it.

"Morrisville has given us a tough time here and we have to be better now. This is the time of the year where we can't have any mental lapses. There's no tomorrow if we lose."

The Mustangs have 10 players with 10 points or more, led by Tyler Swan (9-13-22), Bobby Cass (8-12-20) and Geoff Matzel (12-7-19).

Relkoff (9-12-1, 3.63 gaa) has been a mainstay in net for Morrisville. And, while his statistics don't look overly impressive, he is capable of beating anyone — as evidenced by the Mustang's 5-2 win at Oswego where Relkoff made 37 saves.

That was Oswego's only loss in SUNYAC regular season play.

"Their goalie is the foundation of their team," said Emery. "He can get hot and into a rhythm. We have to be ready to play because he's capable of beating anyone in the country. Their win over Oswego shows that.

"Morrisville beat us at our own rink this year and they're coming in here with a lot of confidence, knowing they can beat us."

The SUNYAC Tournament semifinals will be held Saturday, with Oswego and Geneseo being the home teams.

It should be noted that if Buffalo State and Plattsburgh State, the two higher seeds in the quarterfinals, both win, the Bengals will be at Geneseo and the Cardinals at Oswego.

But, if Plattsburgh State wins and Buffalo State loses to Fredonia, Oswego would host the lowest remaining seed, which would be the Blue Devils, and the Cardinals would go to Geneseo.

We still don't know! :)

Better be Leis, or Prez has a big advantage in our FHL matchup

Cards get edge on Morrisville - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/24/2011}

The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team is still breathing.

But just barely after Morrisville gave the Cardinals all they could handle Wednesday night.

Jared Docking's goal at 11:58 of overtime lifted the Cardinals to a hard-fought 4-3 win in the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals at the Stafford Ice Arena.

No. 4 seed Plattsburgh State (18-7-1) moves on to Saturday's semifinals at second-seeded Geneseo. In the other quarterfinal Wednesday night, Fredonia edged No. 3 seed Buffalo State, 3-2, and will meet top-seeded Oswego in the semis.

"I give Morrisville credit," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "They played hard.

"There was a lot at stake tonight, and I'm happy with the way our guys responded. They found a way to get it done."

The Cardinals took a 2-1 advantage into the third period.

The fifth-seeded Mustangs (11-13-1), however, rallied to take a 3-2 lead on goals by Curtis Renaud on a turnaround shot in front at 5:54 and then Derek Matheson with a slapshot from the point at 12:04.

Plattsburgh State didn't trail for long.

Just over a minute later, Ryan Craig got enough of the puck from close range to tip it across the line past Morrisville netminder Caylin Relkoff to tie it at 3-all.

It stayed that way the rest of regulation.

Plattsburgh State then outshot Morrisville, 15-3, in overtime, and Docking gave the Cardinals the win when he scored on a wrap-around off a nice individual effort.

"Docking works hard, and that goal was the result of hard work," said Emery.

There was no scoring in the first period, despite the Cardinals having plenty of opportunities.

"We seem to put goalies into a zone," said Emery. "We had so many chances early on we didn't score on. We have to work so hard for our goals."

The Cardinals did break through at 6:09 of the second when Nick Jensen sent the puck in front from behind the net and Craig was all alone to beat Relkoff, who had no chance on the play.

Then, at 12:54, the Cardinals had a couple of chances in front before Eric Satim tapped in a rebound to make it 2-0.

But the Mustangs cut their deficit in half shortly after when Tyler Swam jumped on a loose puck in front to beat Josh Leis.

The Cardinals ended up with a 44-29 advantage in shots on goal, with Leis finishing with 26 saves and Relkoff with 40.

"It was a rollercoaster-type game for us," said Emery. "When we played our game, we played really well.

"But we got into trouble when we didn't get the puck in deep. We had six forwards who played well tonight.

"But we're still breathing."

In No. 6 Fredonia's win at Buffalo State, Ben Waldman scored all three goals for the Blue Devils. All the game's scoring was done in the second period, with Fredonia rallying from a 2-1 deficit.

Three Cards named to All-SUNYAC teams - {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 2/24/2011}

Three members of the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team have been named to the 2010-11 All-Conference Team, announced by the SUNY Athletic Conference Wednesday. Forward Eric Satim was named to the first team, while forward Dylan Clarke and defenseman Mike Grace earned second-team honors.

Satim, a senior out of Montreal, Quebec, is a two-time All-Conference honoree. He currently leads the Plattsburgh offense with 19 assists and 31 points, with 20 of those points coming in conference play. Satim registered his 100th career point earlier this season in a 7-1 win over Curry, becoming the 50th Cardinal to reach the milestone. He was also named Most Valuable Player of the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout.

Clarke has received All-Conference accolades each year of his four-year career. The senior from Belleville, Ontario, leads the team with 16 goals and is second in scoring with 29 points. Clarke is tied for fourth in the nation with nine power-play goals and has tallied a total of 136 career points.

Grace, a sophomore from Rochester, earned the first All-SUNYAC selection of his career. He leads the Cardinals' blueliners with three goals and 15 assists. In his second season, Grace has helped anchor a defense that has allowed 66 goals.

Fredonia placed two players, forward Jordan Oye and defenseman Steve Rizer, on the first team. Oswego forward Ian Boots, Geneseo defenseman Danny Scagnelli and Buffalo State goaltender Kevin Carr were the other selections.

The Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year will be announced later this week.
