Penn State Hockey 2014-2015

Re: Penn State Hockey 2014-2015

So...

any chance we can get this thread back to talking some hockey?

Slim to none, with that ugly helmet fan in here jaw jacking all the time.

He should run along to walmart and buy himself a new team sweatshirt.

Re: Penn State Hockey 2014-2015

Hey everyone. Out of towner here going to my first Penn State game this weekend. I'm curious if there is an iconic food I need to try while there. Chicago has deep dish pizza, Philly has the cheese steak, Pittsburgh has the Primanti style sandwich. So how about State College? Is there a unique or popular food to match? Or if no specific food how about a landmark restaurant?

Thanks for any suggestions. I'm looking forward to this!

UMICH and Hokydad are missing more than one chromosome, and that's all the time I'll waste on those neanderthals.

I hope the Gophers score the winning goal late in the game, leaving no chance for PSU to come from behind. I hear they are good at that.

Grilled stickies at the Diner are the big tradition. They are also known for ice cream at the Berkey Creamery, although it's pretty **** cold to be eating ice cream right now, so I'd say head to the Diner. It's open 24 hours, so before or after the game will work. Are you a Gopher fan or just a hockey fan going in for a visit? Either way, have a good time -- it's a great facility and great atmosphere!

Re: Penn State Hockey 2014-2015

Thanks for the tips! I'm an extremely jealous Illinois fan... So I'm making the rounds in the Big Ten. Never seen a NCAA hockey game prior to this year. So far I've caught Ohio, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Penn State is this weekend and I'm hoping to do a two for one trip for Michigan and Michigan State before the season ends. I was a hockey fan in general, and yes I am a new college hockey fan largely because the Big Ten. So yes, I see people debate that a lot and us new fans do exist.

Maybe eventually you'll develop a taste for GOOD college hockey.

That's awesome. I hope to make those rounds myself. I was in school toward the end of the club era so I attended a number of the old PSU-Illinois club games. I really hope you guys can make the jump to D-I in the not too distant future. I feel like they are destined to be the next B1G squad. Let us know later how your visit was!

Re: Penn State Hockey 2014-2015

What a great game to be at. It was tough to see Penn State allow Minnesota to tie it late, but the OT win was satisfying. I think a lot of Minnesota fans disregard Penn State, one because they are new and two because they caused the B1G league. It's nice to see Penn State demand a little respect.

So far it's been a good weekend. The stadium is just phenomenal. The seating is a little tight and I'm not a big guy. But otherwise it's beautiful. The fans were welcoming and eager to get to know the other B1G teams and learn a little history. As for non hockey, I walked the campus briefly (it's cold). Stickies are in fact delicious. And it wasn't too cold for some Berkey ice cream. Currently I'm finishing the day off at Happy Valley Brewing Company. I'm willing to call this a successful trip. Now if only the drive back to Chicago was a bit shorter...

Hockey is our little secret (just how awesome it is). What a great weekend to see in person.

I don't think MN fans overlooked PSU. There's quite a bit of bravado, but that's a schtick (sorry to out you guys). There has been a serious debate in the community on this series. Many of us felt good about it...not because PSU doesn't deserve respect being new...but because a weak SOS at home really helped its record there and MN has been turning in some really great hockey (which was on display this weekend). Now if only B1G hockey catches on on the 100s of thousands of households carrying BTN...

I have no DISrespect for Penn State hockey, but REspect is earned (not demanded), and it takes much more than a game or weekend to build that. As for disregarding their team, I don't think many Minnesota fans did coming into this weekend. Their SOS (like 5min mentioned) has been weak, but they also have one of the older squads in the B1G (in the NCAA for that matter) this season and have been playing very well this season (most of us watch other games).

Penn State has a good squad this season. Two very entertaining hockey games. Look forward to seeing this rivalry grow.

slowe -- glad you had a good trip!

To the Gophers, good, hard-fought games this weekend. I was pretty much expecting a close split
