At this point with these CHL players and getting paid over American players who are just as good in Juniors I know I speak for a lot of D1 hockey fans for Penn State to lose and never make the tourney!

Also, lol at "American players who are just as good in Juniors". Major junior is a higher skilled league than the junior A teams, and the players getting this sort of money are better at their level than most of the high end recruits, of which Penn State has never gotten. Porter Martone is going top 5 in the NHL draft, had 98 points in 57 games this season, and captained team Canada to both Hlinka-Gretzky and U18 World Juniors gold last year. I'd buy this sort of talk if every overage player putting up a 20-goal season was getting these deals but most of them appear to just be the same as other recruits.

If you just really need to be mad at someone, be mad at the coaches council for not dealing with these issues before the lawsuits (that were predicted and obviously imminent!) came in and forced their hand re: CHL, and if you're mad about NIL, join the very long list of people with grievances to the NCAA for losing every single lawsuit. NCAA did everything to resist modernizing and keeping up with the times, and the consequences of that massive failure is these court decisions that result in forcible regulatory changes with no flexibility. I find it way more productive considering the intrigue of the influx of new talent to every single hockey program increasing the competitive landscape than grabbing pitchforks for some perceived slight against unnamed players in the future. There are just as many of those people on message boards who have been angry about having the chance to play college hockey being taken away because they once received a small stipend for living costs as a 16 year old for way longer than any of us.

Honestly, Penn State Men's Hockey becoming some huge bogeyman overnight is the funniest thing I've seen in a while, because in 2012 this was a club team. You'd think they had as many natty's as Michigan or Minnesota with the shit going around. Whole lot of pot calling kettle going on everywhere.

But you must know that these players stats their overage year is inflated as you can only have 3 overages per team therefore these older players 21 are playing mostly against 16-17 year olds. NAHL teams can have as many overages as they want so the top teams are loaded with them and if your younger player you are playing against the majority of older players.

That doesn't mean every single overage player is immediately worse than any player in leagues 2 levels under. I have been telling people to temper expectations on overage players because of this- there will be some adjustment period as they get used to being the younger smaller player again, but that is true of all other level jumps. All junior numbers are inflated to an extent because of the vast differences in the skills and ages throughout every single league, which is why coaches and scouts go and actually watch the players. It will be fascinating to see that adjustment since it is new territory, with the CHL having a more comparable level in skill but being younger. WHL players will have it the easiest as the most punishing league.

As for Porter Martone, he's only 18 years old and an outstanding talent. Any school who has a sniff of a chance to recruit him would be doing their team and their fans a disservice by not pursuing it.
