Re: Penn St at Minnesota - February 3-4

This is obviously a HUGE series that has important implications from both a conference and PairWise standpoint. There is NO DOUBT that the Nittany Lions will come in desperate to get their "roar" back after going 0-2-1 in their last three, including a loss to unranked Princeton. The Gophers will need to display all of their "pride" on ice and "pounce" on the attack at every opportunity, with numbers. And our alpha male Mr. Schierhorn must remain alert at all times and stand his ground at all cost, knowing those lions will attack from anywhere because they'll be extra hungry.

I know this being a Big Ten series and all.....is it ok to be excited for it?

I am a little. I am actually driving down for the game on saturday. Hope it is a good one, as am bringing the family, some of which have little experience as hockey spectators.

Re: Penn St at Minnesota - February 3-4

Well I'm excited. #6 team in the country coming into Mariucci with important PWR implications on the line.

I'm going on Saturday for sure, still debating Friday.

Re: Penn St at Minnesota - February 3-4

I think it is technically possible to get excited for Big Ten games and wish we could play more instate rivals.

Well, there you go again.

Big series - time to get it done. Have to post the lion with the scarf picture on Twitter and hope the PSU fans cry about it again.

Re: Penn St at Minnesota - February 3-4

Due to work responsibilities I haven't watched a single Gopher game all season, which is unusual for me. But I'm hoping to catch this series with Penn St. Again this season, PSU looks like a powerhouse team that knows how to put the puck on net and protect their own. Their SOGM is off the charts and almost double every other D1 team. PSU coming off back to back losses will be hungry. Big series.:)

Gophers don't pounce, they crawl. Underground mostly. More of a slither.

Article in the Strib this morning on what appears to be a budding rivalry.

"We've been talking to the younger guys, who have no idea what it's like going into Mariucci Arena and playing in that atmosphere,'' DeRosa said. "It's incredible, and it's so fun. Sometimes you're getting it from the fans, but I think it's awesome."

I can see that happening. Gadowsky has done an outstanding job in recruiting and building their program into contenders...very impressive. I really like his "crash the net" style of hockey. If the Gophers can block shots and match that style, they've got a good shot at their 4th consecutive Big Ten title.

Re: Penn St at Minnesota - February 3-4

Can't ask for a better game plan execution by the Gophers than that one. Shutdown play by the D and some nice chemistry on the Sheehy/Kloos/Pitlick line. They looked very good tonight and they're peaking at the right time. Fun game to watch.

Totally agree, the team continues to get better, especially defensively - both at the blue line and in goal. I would argue, however, that the play on the ice was quite a bit closer than the 5-1 score would indicate. Penn State barely missed on a half-dozen excellent chances, and on any given night several of those could have easily gone in. Still, there is no doubt that the Gophers were the better team and deserved to win the game. Now let's see if the Gophs can do it again tomorrow.

Re: Penn St at Minnesota - February 3-4

The Gophers did exactly what they needed to do in their zone, crowd the lanes, keep shots on the perimeter and block shots. The Gophers avg. about 11 Blks/GM, but last night they had 19, PSU 9. Seems like PSU has been good all season protecting the paint, but not last night. They let the Gophers roam around the shooting lanes which accounted for 3 of their 5 goals. Gadowsky will make sure that doesn't happen tonight. Could be a long night for the Maroon and Gold if they don't duplicate last night's effort.

Good to see Scheirhorn didn't display his recent Friday night form and as I mentioned in the season thread, Cammie was noticeable for a few of the type of passes that impressed us when he was a freshman, and not for his lack of effort.

Hoping it is a good game, as I am taking the family to watch tonight. Hope there is another solid effort and victory for Gophs tonight, and would be fine if it is closer in scoring. (I agree with earlier assessment. Gophs were better team overall, but was closer than score indicated. A close shot goes in for PSU and it could have been a different game.)

Re: Penn St at Minnesota - February 3-4

LOL. You can wish in one hand and crap in the other, guess which will fill up first?

I would argue, however, that the play on the ice was quite a bit closer than the 5-1 score would indicate.

I would argue the opposite. PSU is incredibly overrated. This is the first real road test they've faced all year and the game was over five minutes into the second period. PSU has played no one all year and in true Guy Gadowsky fashion, they put a lot of pucks on the net but play terrible defense. Not exactly a recipe for postseason success.

PSU will be one and done in the tournament and they deserve it. What a cowardly schedule. Non hockey reference here, but Mike Brey and Jim Boeheim think Gadowsky's schedule is cowardly.
