Pairwise Bracketology Part Deux: Playing with RHamilton's Tool

Re: Pairwise Bracketology Part Deux: Playing with RHamilton's Tool

One other factor to consider is that the committee is instructed to avoid intra-conference first round match ups except if 5 or more from the same conference get in. If the WCHA gets 6 they could go with the pure seeding except the UNH host situation. That way you could see a North Dakota-Minnesota State first round match up or North Dakota-Denver match up depending on who wins today. The WCHA would get teams in 4 different regions as well. If Michigan wins they would get 3 in one region and if Notre Dame wins they get 2 in two regions. This would actually end up being the fairest set up of all.

The thread for fairness is located somewhere over there ----) :D

Michigan running the table is the most likely scenario. Not surprised that most people are projecting the Sioux and Gophs in GR. I expected that all along.
Cloudies would have a tough bracket as well.
As a cloudsman, I feel good about our chances against Notre Dame and Miami.

Is John Whelan's predictor working?

Yep.

Remember that his rankings break ties by the individual comparison, not RPI (we don't know which way the Committee would do it, that's just how he does it), and that the output is PWR ranking only, so you have to adjust for Canisius and maybe Michigan yourself.

While this is true to the letter of the rules, the normal interpretation, based on past years when 5 teams from one conference have qualified, is that they avoid intraconference matchups whenever possible, without changing any seed bands.

So, in this case, there 1 #1; 1 #2; 2 #3s; 2 #4s. The committee can easily work around that.

However, let's say it was 0 #1s, 2 #2s, 3#3s, 1 #4. Now, since there are 5 teams altogether in the the #2 vs #3 bands, and you can't change one the 3s to a 4, you can't avoid an all-conf matchup.

This has been the past interpretation.

Agreed that the committee could do something different, but in this regard, that's doubtful.

Re: Pairwise Bracketology Part Deux: Playing with RHamilton's Tool

Code:
[B]Providence Manchester Toledo Grand Rapids[/B]
Quinnipiac Lowell Notre Dame Minnesota
Boston C New Hamp Miami North Dakota
Mankato Denver Union Niagara
Canisius Wisconsin St Cloud Yale

Another prediction I will make is that we're about to have a war between two sites over who was "right" (bracket integrity vs attendance). There is no "right" only what the committee chooses. This represents my best guess of what the NCAA will do; it doesn't mean I necessarily think this is what the brackets SHOULD be. If the NCAA leans towards bracket integrity, more power to them. It doesn't mean people were "right" or "wrong".

Correction. selection show is at 8 central, 9 eastern. Not 8:30 central and 9:30 eastern.

It's on ESPN, so I'm sure there will be about a 30-minute recap of each team's season, some highlights, interviews with players and coaches etc before the actual selection show gets underway around 9:30...

I can already hear the complaining if BC gets placed in Providence (especially if Union joins them)...the westerners won't be able to handle it. Ultimately I think BC will be placed in Providence, which I would gladly take.

Fortunately, there is a thread for just such an occasion.

Supposedly Quinnipiac will be live in the studio, unless they don't show up in Bristol either.

Before the selection show from 7-9 PM EDT on ESPNU: "Classic College Hockey" featuring the 2012 national championship game between BC and Ferris State. :)
