Oswego 2011 Playoff and Offseason Thread: Hips and Nips or We Don't Win!

Re: Oswego 2011 Playoff and Offseason Thread: Hips and Nips or We Don't Win!

From experience, I think part of the reason why basketball is so popular at Plattsburgh, other than recent success, is the proximity of the gym on campus compared to the hockey rink. If the Staff was as close to the dorms as Memorial Hall Gymnasium was, you better believe students would be packing that place. I think proximity creates such a disconnect for students when it comes to hockey. Its unfortunate. I wish I was still part of the committee to try and draw students to athletic events. I would suggest 3 or 4 shuttles specifically from the dorms to the rink, free of charge, and vice versa.

Oswego has a shuttle bus that runs all around the campus - one of the stops is right outside Laker Hall. NCAA game notwithstanding, there usually aren't too many students at those games even with transportation available. The basketball team is kind of dammed if they do and dammed if they don't - if they play on weekdays, kids have schoolwork. If they play on a weekend when there's hockey, forget about it.

Gosek should have his men in their warmups sitting in the front row at Laker Hall cheering their fellow Lakers into the Sweet 16.......

This would be a great idea for campus unity. I don't remember seeing the basketball team doing this sort of thing in support of the hockey team too often during my days on campus. However it would certainly mean more coming from the top sport on campus. I feel the hockey team may have even done this at one point or another.

Doesn't take much thought to organize the LAKER EXPRESS... You need a few (four?) buses to pick up at designated points on campus - first pick up 60 minutes before tip-off...the incentive - free food and T-Shirts...the second pick-up 30 minutes before tip-off...less food, whatever T-Shirts are left...

After the game, half the buses go to Downtown, half go round campus..... :D:D:D

And just to clarify the basketball > hockey argument...while Friday night's first round game at Laker Hall was PACKED...last night's 2nd round game was not. It looked like only a few hundred were in attendence.

I was not there last night, but watching it online, you are correct, the few hundred that overflowed to the bleachers behind the teams on Friday were not there Saturday....but it looked pretty full on the near side of the court..... I'm not sure there is an argument here - I think the college is focused on improving the overall athletic program and raising basketball's profile leveraging the team's success is a good way to go IMHO. Friday night was electric and something to build on for next year - they have a young team - the future is bright...:D:D:D

Exactly, and I will be following. As far as 'tweakball' John Wooden would not be amused......:)

Exactly, and I will be following. As far as 'squeakball' John Wooden would not be amused.... not that his amusement really matters to the type of people who use that term anyway :)

Fixed your post :)

PS: And with all due respect, R.I.P. Coach Wooden.

I believe I saw members of the hockey team at the game.

Im all for supporting the other teams, we used to do it all the time from B ball to rugby...BUT...I think they should have been together watching the Birds win the title, motivation etc etc.......I know it would have ****ed me off watching, as it did playing....

Yea but after 20 times compared to 9, you would think some people would get use to it by now :) j/k

I might have missed it, but did the Lakers win??

Re: Oswego 2011 Playoff and Offseason Thread: Hips and Nips or We Don't Win!

So now that we know the Lakers will either face Neumann or Bowdoin (like last year) which team would we rather face at the CC - i.e. which team do we match up better with?

I wonder what Coach Gosek has in store for his players this week. Hopefully something to convince them playing .500 hockey in their last 4 isn't going to cut it anymore.

I'm working on trying to figure out if the game will be broad/webcasted by WTOP on Saturday. Last year it was, even though Spring Break had started thanks to some dedicated former classmates of mine.

Based on this teams track record, it really all depends upon the attitude they bring to the game. When this team is playing like they did against Geneseo, I don't believe there is a team in D3 that can beat them. There is also a bit of luck involved, how do you put 45 shots on a mediocre goaltender and only score 1 goal and the following week Plattsburgh puts 30 shots on the same goaltender and scores 4 times. I'm sure Gosek will have them working hard and will not let them forget what got them to this spot in the NCAA's.
