Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Abu Dahbi qualifying is done.

Nothing really spectacular, but headlines- Weber pole! Seb 2nd. Alonso failed to get into P3. He's surely making finishing 2nd in the points much more difficult.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Ugh, another snooze fest up front. But thankfully from about fourth on back there was good racing. I really, really, really would love to know for sure if it was car or Vettel that is so **** good.

Read today that the new investors at Lotus have told Boullier to sign Hulkenburg. I hope that does come to pass. He's a good driver and it would be nice to see what he can do in (hopefully) a better car.

A nice GP2 win for Rossi. First American to win a GP2 race. I hope this bodes well for him for next season.

And finally I recorded but haven't watch yet the interview of Vettel by Mario. I wasn't going to record it as I don't like Vettel, but then I decided to just to see if he comes of as a jerk there like he does at other times. I keep reading by reporters/columnists that Vettel is a nice, funny, engaging, young man but for me he never comes off that way, so maybe this will give me some more insight.

totally agree. I'd love to know how much of his success can be attributed to being in a Newey car. Take Newey and give him to Alonso or Hamilton then what happens?

I'll have to look up that interview.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

If you don't like Vettel, don't watch the interviews. I saw him on Top Gear, and he's a really nice guy and gives you no reason not to like him.

You may end up liking him.

I still haven't watched the interview but I still intend to. That's OK with me if I turn out to be able to tolerate (gasp, like?) him. I wasn't a fan of Alonso at first either, but now I like him. It happens.

If it's just the car, then Webber must really suck...

The whole problem with this Vettel hatefest (and I admit, I have it to a degree, too) is nobody puts the Webber factor into perspective.

A nice GP2 win for Rossi. First American to win a GP2 race. I hope this bodes well for him for next season.

The highlight of the weekend for me to see in person was Rossi winning his first GP2 race.

Since the racing apparently isn't drama enough...

Kimi to miss the last two races Of course, the fact that there's a significant pay dispute AND that Lotus is very close to 2nd as a manufacturer, AND Kimi is apparently taking an out that leaves his contract in place, we have a nice drama happening. We will not be able to see Kimi in Texas..

Autosport also has stories about Newey not getting a long term contract (RB thinks he'll stay regardless), Magnussen the front runner to replace Perez at McLaren, and Russian Daniil Kvyat got a superlicence (aka, more Russian money to F1).

So the leading #2 for driver and team comes down to Ferrari and Mercedes, with Alonso having the very clear lead to be #2 overall while Mercedes seems to have a slight advantage with Rosberg+Hamilton doing better than Alonso+Massa recently. Other than that, one can expect Vettel to win out the last two races.

And Massa has been announced as a Williams driver next year replacing Maldonado.

So, does Maldonado take his oil money to Lotus, usurping Hulkenberg?

Hopefully, the fact that McLaren signed Magnussen means that Perez's will have a better chance than Maldonado. He's a better driver.

That, and with the death of Chaves, one does wonder if money will remain for Maldonado.

Well, it's not official, yet. McLaren is still denying any decision. If it happens, will be the first time McLaren signed a young prospect since some guy named Hamilton. :-)

Hulkenberg is better than both Maldonado and Perez. He's the one who should be on Lotus, and I would love to see what he could do there. Would spice up the championship a lot more than having Perez or Maldonado on Lotus.

My money is on Maldonado.I can't see them not doing it, good driver or not.

I would not say that Webber "sucks" but I do think he is a average (at best) F1 driver who has also been aided by an excellent car. All of his wins are in the RB. Heck all but one of his podiums have been in an RB.

I think that Lotus will take Maldonado's money.

I hope Lotus replaces Kimi with Heikki for the last two races. I think he is the best available driver and could fight for points to help them in the constructors championship.

It is now. Well, the Perez leaving part.

And now Magnussen in at McLaren.

Also, Heikki in at Lotus for the last two races. And based upon presser, it sounds like Heikki will be back in a race seat for Caterham next season.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Dario Franchitti will no longer race. Aside from the recent and not so recent losses of drivers in racing crashes, this is one of the saddest racing stories in years for me. I had no idea his injuries were this serious, as all of the surgeries mentione were those on his ankle injury. Hopefully this guy finds a way to be involved with open wheel racing in a big big way.

I agree. I was just being a bit of a drama queen for effect... :-)

You nailed this one!
