Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Figured that since Lotus is launching their 2013 contender today that it was time for a new thread. In case anyone is interested the Lotus launch can be seen on their YouTube channel.

Lotus designates their new model as the E21. I have one of those.:);)

Lotus....I see by the car's shape under the sheet that the front nose is still raised up. Ugly.

Yup. Still has the stepped nose. Allison said that unless there is an aero advantage to adding the cover over the stepped nose they will not add one.

looks like 3 open seats remain in F1, and ...BRUNO SENNA is in the running, yeah!

also...**** it's been a hell of a slow silly-season for Indycar, what gives?

I'd just change the rules to say the bottom of the car has to be within X cm of the asphalt from the tip of the nose to the air intake duct behind the driver, and define a minimum width of this area and that is has to be entirely enclosed with no air flowing through the enclosed area.

Indycar random thoughts ....the best news is Beau Barfield is still running race control. All's quiet on the TG BB front. A couple races will have standing starts, which is a good start. Sato is with Foyt. Vaultier signed with SPM, I'm very interested to see if he can maintain his performance level from the Sonoma test. Overall I'm pretty excited about the upcoming season.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Supposedly there is a group of American and Canadian investors looking to buy what is left of HRT. The rumors is they will rebrand it as Scorpion Racing. However, Bernie is on record saying it is too late for this season. I guess time will tell. I think this is more of a "kick the tires" type of thing than a serious investment.

Funny thing is that the team that was supposed to come out of the US- I actually figured that they would be very talented with engineering staff. FSAE is SO popular, and most of them would do anything to do F1 that given the opportunity- the masses of talented aplicants would be able to get some great skills.

Alas, lots of reasons why it didn't happen. So I do hope that HRT is bought, and brought to the US.

If the new Sauber runs as good as it looks then the rest of the field should watch out!

Interesting. I have vowed not to succumb to 3DTV. I hate chasing technology. When I grew up I watched UW hockey on a 13" black and white tv. That being said, we do have an HD tv in the living room, it was a present to my wife, she had to have it. Funny thing is I bust her all the time not watching the HD channels.

Preseason testing underway, it's always a mystery how fast cars really are.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Jerez testing is done, Massa with the overall fastest time, but Lotus seemed to be the most consistently fast throughout the test.

Looks like Allmendinger is going to get a couple races in with Penske as a part time 3rd car, depending on funding and the results of a test. I didn't watch CART when he was in that series, but apparently he was pretty darn good. I hope it goes well. I like to see guys get second chances after screwing up, provided they stay away from the issue that caused the problem in the first place.

Just read yesterday that some recycling company bought all of HRTs stuff (except the engines and gearboxes which were leased) and plan to ... well ... recycle all of it. So, this new team idea is dead.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

do you guys know anything about Jarett Andretti? I've read that Mario has always stated that his brother Aldo was the better driver. It would be cool as hell to see his grandson inherit the skill and guts that Aldo apparently had

I saw him race supermodifieds at Oswego last summer. He pulled a "typical Andretti" move. Here is what I wrote about it:

BTW, I always felt that John Andretti was the most talented second generation Andretti. I raced against him in Skip Barber Formula Ford (along with Jeff Andretti). Needless to say, John kicked my, and the rest of the field's, *ss.

Allmendinger was extremely talented and fast in CART (after completely dominating Formula Atlantic). He was also a huge head case, worse than Byran Herta, when it came to throwing away victories.

I don't recall Herta being that good. He can't be any worse at throwing away championships than Power.
