Ohio State vs Wisconsin 2/5 - 2/6

Re: Ohio State vs Wisconsin 2/5 - 2/6

I thought we played well tonight. We didn't get many chances, but we kept Wisco from getting too many good ones for themselves. Our power play was pretty much useless, but we did well on the PK. Frankly, I'm glad we managed to score at all. From what I understand, Wisco's goalie is pretty darn good.

I was at the game and I totally agree. We played a solid game tonight despite losing 2-1. Wisconsin did double up Ohio State in SOG, 28-14 with Ann-Renee Desbiens making 13 saves and Ohio State's Stacy Danczak getting 26 stops. Jenny Ryan opened the scoring for Wisconsin with a goal at the 18:20 mark of the first period to put the Badgers up 1-0. The game stayed that way until the 3rd period when Annie Pankowski scored what turned out to be the game-winner for Wisconsin at the 3:54 mark of the third period. Ohio State's Claudia Kepler, who hails from Verona, WI, just outside of Madison, scored later in the period to make it 2-1. That was as close at the Buckeyes could get. Wisconsin has a great goaltender in Ann-Renee Desbiens and their D-corps as a whole just do not give you many opportunities. I did not notice this while watching the game (not very observant, I guess), but the Buckeyes played the game with five D's, then four after Bryanna Neuwald was checked against the boards and injured. I am not using this as an excuse, it's just something that happened and factored into our third period as our D's appeared to tire and had trouble getting the puck out of our zone. They just appeared to be losing their legs in the third period. Give the Badgers credit for their smothering D, too. Having to deal with that for 60 minutes probably factored into our fatigue. Hopefully we can bring that same effort tomorrow and maybe get another goal or two. I am not into moral victories. A loss is a loss, but in a season like this one where we have a new coach and kids learning new systems, all I can ask for is effort and improvement and I am seeing both. Clearly, this is a better team than the one that was beaten 7-0 and 8-0 in Madison last fall. Tomorrow's game is a 4:07 pm EST start, for those attending. Here's to another great game tomorrow. Good luck to both teams.

Re: Ohio State vs Wisconsin 2/5 - 2/6

I'd rather go with 100' or even wider if only that were possible.

Love the idea of going wider than 100. The the game flow with big strides and not be so choppy. Let speed kill and let's end the era of the power forward in hockey.

The rink Illinois's club team plays on is 115 feet wide.
Settle down, Bandy fans! Even with only 85 feet of width available, an admirable example of ice sport occurred tonight in Columbus. For further details, see the Unofficial 3 Stars over on the WCHA thread.

But honestly, I do kind of wish Bandy was popular in America...

The game certainly has its selling points. Looks like it would be a lot of fun.

And yes, it's definitely more popular in Europe than it is here. I've long assumed that lack of facilities is the biggest single factor. If you want refrigerated ice, you basically need the infield of speed skating facility. Not too many of those around. And even some of those have permanent hockey rinks in the infield, thus precluding Bandy. Think Pettit Center in Milwaukee.

On the other hand, the John Rose Oval in Suburban St. Paul offers Bandy opportunities, IIRC. And maybe there's a facility somewhere in New England. You would know better than I on that. But unless there's a major increase in the number of a facilities available, it will remain among the smallest of the niche sports in the USA.

The John Rose Oval in Minnesota has hosted the Bandy World Championships.

Bandy is a great skating game, field hockey on ice, more field hockey than ice hockey.

That is awesome looking...soccer on ice with sticks. I learned about ringer a few years ago, and now bandy. Cool. I'd like to watch more of those games.

Very cool.

Good description. But I'm wondering about the size of the respective playing areas. Just guessing, but isn't a Bandy rink about the size of a Soccer field, while its Field Hockey counterpart is a good bit smaller?

If that's accurate, maybe we're talking about a three sport fusion: Field Hockey on a Soccer Ice Rink!

I'm pretty sure that's literally the only bandy field in the US. At least other super-niche (in the US) sports like hurling are easier to set up on fields with other purposes. Team handball, while much bigger than bandy, faces a similar situation. Most of the millions of basketball gym in the US are too short for a regulation handball court.

I would like to set up a bandy game - even if it's technically without the proper skates and sticks - on the lagoon at Vilas Park one day. There's room.

I don't know a ton about field hockey, but I know enough about th three sports you mentioned to tell you that Bandy is soccer with skates, sticks, and a small ball. Penalty spots - and 10-minute man-advantage penlties - and the goalie area are a bit different, but virtually everything else is the same. (Think about how the offside rule generally controls the flow of the game.) The field plays smaller than a soccer field because players move faster on skates, but it really is like soccer on ice.

Re: Ohio State vs Wisconsin 2/5 - 2/6

Honestly, a hard fought 2-1 win on the road over OSU is more the norm than the two earlier routs in Madison earlier this year.

Kepler has seemingly had success against Badgers, which I'm sure she revels in. With a very finite number of impact players coming out of the state of Wisconsin, it's a little disappointing that she got away (whatever the circumstances).

Not shocked that the goal against was on an odd man rush. As good as Desbiens has been playing, it's only a matter of time that teams will cash in on breakaways/odd man rushes.

With the Gophers seemingly back in a groove, Badgers have to take care of business today.

Re: Ohio State vs Wisconsin 2/5 - 2/6

The Badgers finished the sweep earlier today by a final score of 2-0. It was another hard-fought game on both sides with Wisconsin netminder Ann-Renee Desbiens getting another shutout to add to her total. Baylee Wellhausen opened the scoring for the Badgers at the 4:02 mark of the second period after a scoreless first period with what turned out to be the game-winner. Sam Cogan scored Wisconsin's other goal at the 1:26 mark of the third period. Wisconsin dominated the shots on goal today 37-17. Ann-Renee Desbiens stopped all 17 Ohio State shots. Buckeye goaltender Alex LaMere stopped 35 of the 37 shots she faced today. Ohio State will travel to Bemidji State next weekend for a series with the Beavers. Wisconsin will host Minnesota State.

The 3 Stars are up on the WCHA thread. OK, I can't claim that gazing at a few stars is a full Stairway to Heaven. But you'll definitely be reading about some ladies we all know.;)
