Ohio State vs Wisconsin 11/4 - 11/5

They are probably one of the best examples of what we were discussing in the Badgers' thread regarding a team being without a top forward. I'd hazard a guess that their record over the last couple of years when she is out of the lineup is below their norm no matter the opponent.

Cornell will be missing 4 players, other schools will be missing 1 or 2, and I think the girls have the attitude to go out and work hard no matter who's in the line up. If you rely on just 1 player, then you're an injury away from disaster. Obviously Natalie is a great player but I think the new coach will have the team prepared to play hard regardless of who's in the line up if you follow him on twitter he shouldered some of the responsibility for Grand Forks and I give him credit! I think he's on the right path with this team.

Stefanie McKeough is on the Canadian 4 Nations team.

As a coach or player, that is the attitude that one has to take. As fans, we can look at the reality of the situation, which is that Spooner is an elite player and will be missed. McKeough is a good player, Wisconsin will miss her, but they have a lot of options on their blue line. Without #5, the Buckeyes are less able to send out a second line that scares an opponent. Ohio State can still win, but it is far less likely.

I didn't realize Coach Handrahan was on twitter. I'll have to start following him. I agree with you, he will have our team prepared to play hard, that's a given. Win or lose this weekend, I will be there to cheer the kids on.

Re: Ohio State vs Wisconsin 11/4 - 11/5

The difference is that Knight and Decker and the rest of the U.S. collegians aren't pulled out for 4 Nations until after this weekend's games. Team USA has a camp with post-college players filled out with high school and prep players. Hockey Canada includes their college players in their pre-4-Nations camp.

Good piece of information that I didn't know about. Assuming McKeough will be gone, she'll be missed but the Badgers have pretty good depth at defense. As a fan of both women's and men's college hockey, I really hate seeing quality players (from any team) have to miss any games, let alone conference games. I know the international tournaments probably don't care and will do what's in their own best interest, but there is already almost a month off in December/January. I'd like to see them use that break for these tournaments (though maybe there are more then anyway).

It's a different sport and mentality, but you'd never see this in college basketball or football. It would be like Jordan Taylor leaving the Badger Basketball team during the Big Ten season. It's not even conceivable in those sports, but just accepted in college hockey. Kind of frustrating...

Note, though, that this happens to Men's D-1 Hockey Teams over the holidays as a result of the World Junior Tournament. And it happens to MLS (Major League Soccer) teams all of the time -- Columbus Crew, Chicago Fire, etc.

I checked the schedule and noticed Ohio State is taking next weekend off before traveling to Syracuse for games on 11/18 and 11/19.

I think that the whole WCHA is idle on the 11th and 12th weekend. UMD was the first program to schedule byes around 4 Nations, and one by one as they get bit by player absences, the other schools have followed suit, so someone like SCSU doesn't have anyone to play even if they have a full roster. The problem with those who miss a second week for a pre-tourney camp is that you can't really schedule two byes in a row.

I agree. I often wonder if coaches "forbid" it, for lack of a better word. As amazing as world level playing is and ultimately helps the player, is the player not there for their collegiate team first? Especially if they are a full scholarship player? Then again, would missing the camp or even the tournament be the kiss of death for that athlete's involvement in their national program? Anybody with a player out there have any insight to this?

We have definitely been bit by player absences in the past! I also agree with Badger Booster that it can be frustrating! It is what it is, though, and at the end of the day I wouldn't want to see one of our kids not get to go to the Olympics or Worlds in April because she had not been participating in these national team events.

I think it is pretty common with the non revenue sports. There isn't any international competition for football and with the exception of hockey the pros are typically playing in the men's international events. Coaches would have a very hard time recruiting the best athletes in their sports if they told them they couldn't compete in these events.

Re: Ohio State vs Wisconsin 11/4 - 11/5

Tough night for our Buckeyes! I felt for them because they really worked hard, but Wisconsin prevailed tonight 3-1. They obviously have a great team, but we had our chances to get the puck in the back of the net. Wisconsin led 1-0 after 1, we tied it up in the second period and went into the third period tied at 1. Wisconsin scored the game winner with seven minutes and change and then added another goal a few minutes later. Hopefully we bounce back tomorrow and get a split. We played hard tonight. It would have been nice to see the team rewarded for their hard work. We'll see what happens tomorrow. Go Bucks!

Tough weekend for the Bucks, but they competed and did some good things this weekend. The Buckeyes lost 2-0 earlier tonight, but I believe wholeheartedly that better days are ahead for this team. They defended Wisconsin fairly well, they just needed to get some more pucks in the back of the net. The Buckeyes will have next week off, then head to Syracuse for a non-league tilt before heading back home to face UMD over Thanksgiving weekend.
