Ohio State vs North Dakota 1/27 - 1/28

Re: Ohio State vs North Dakota 1/27 - 1/28

I thought it was recently predicted that Ohio State would not win another game this year. It did not take long for Ohio State to prove that wrong.

On the flip side, by BC team got blind sided by 6 goals earlier this week, so know the feeling.

Re: Ohio State vs North Dakota 1/27 - 1/28

The Unofficial 3 Stars for Friday's Game is now available on the WCHA III thread.

I didn't use the word "drubbbing," but it was indeed a dramatic reversal of last October's results.

That was the drubbing I was referring to. When you get your arse kicked you don't forget. Get it now? :)

Re: Ohio State vs North Dakota 1/27 - 1/28

A split is a good result for OSU this weekend. If the coach was offered a split Friday morning, I think he just might have taken it. ;)
I have some doubts about that myself. The big picture, Buckeyes lost 3 out of 4 games and 9 out of possible twelve points in the season series. Suspect the team and coach H would have really wanted better. A season split at the very least. Have to do better against a team you're battling in the standings for the coveted first round home ice. Now they're in a dead heat with UMD who has the favorable remaining schedule. Six points for OSU this weekend may not have been enough considering those schedules but way better than three. Not over yet but Buckeyes remaining schedule is a little scary. Next weekend is huge and I hope they can grab a bunch of points and avoid encounters with flying liquid dispensing projectiles.

Nope...Last time out they were outscored by a margin of 18-2 or thereabouts, ND clobbered the improving but hapless SCU by I think a 19 to zip count last week, and they have the twins amongst others. I'm sticking with my version. Get in the playoffs and go from there. It's a different animal, home ice or not. :)

So, the coach and team wouldn't prefer home ice then? Makes them quite unique I guess.

Re: Ohio State vs North Dakota 1/27 - 1/28

no (good) coach would ever be content with a split!
and i bet you'll be traveling to GF for the 1st round, so good luck to you

Your quite good at putting words in my mouth. Never said that. I was saying that under the circumstances, which I previously listed, a split at this stage in the season isn't all bad. I'm sure a lot of people might have thought ND would sweep. After all, you were the one that pointed out all the stats, which seemed to me, fell heavily in favor of ND. But you're good at that correct? ;)

So you're not confused, I meant to start off with you're. Easy to do actually, when you're a lousy typist. :)

It isn't all bad. It's better than losing two but in reality, not a result that's going to benefit your chances for that home ice very much. I still seriously doubt the team or coach is content with a split at home or the season series outcome, which is most important in a drive to finish in the top four. You said you believed the coach might have taken a split if offered one beforehand. In a parallel dimension where he gets that opportunity, if he takes it he doesn't have much faith in his team or want to finish in the top half very badly. I don't believe he would he would take that fantasy deal. The increased difficulty to finish in the top four by splitting this series is not insignificant.

BTW, I had no preconceived notion UND would sweep. Honestly, my impression is you don't see much WCHA hockey.

Caught your reference immediately, and agreed immediately. I was simply suggesting that as an eyewitness, my take is that both of this weekend's games were a bit more competitive than the scores would suggest. (EDIT: No doubt my wording could have been better.)

For more details, see the WCHA III thread. The Unofficial Three Stars for both games have now been posted.

WOW. Agent 86, how are we now? Looks like a great performance according to the stats. See what a drubbing can do for you? Good job OSU! :)

CanHockGuy, we were there Friday. It was a great performance by the girls. It just may have been the best game they have played all season. The 4-1 win over UMD last November comes to mind in that category, too, but that Friday night game was amazing. We just smothered UND. They really couldn't get anything going, and there was really no point where the game was in doubt. Too bad we couldn't win last night and get six points. I still believe this team can win enough games to stay in the top four and get home ice in the first round. I don't believe for one minute that performances like Friday's are a fluke. I believe we have the talent to win games like that every night out, we just need to be mentally tough and bring that type of game every night. :)

Re: Ohio State vs North Dakota 1/27 - 1/28

Well put, osualum86. I would add that Friday shows what the Buckeyes are capable of, and the Saturday is a reminder of how tough it is beat the top WCHA teams.

With Regard to Splits: The posts so far haven't really nailed it, IMHO. So I'll give it a shot.

First, when a pair of good teams play two games in two days, there's going to be a tendency to split. Acknowledging that fact doesn't mean you're satisfied with winning 1 of 2. But a certain amount of realism is usually a virtue, not a vice.

Second, properly motivating a team is one of the toughest challenges coaches face. Every group of players is going to be a little different. But more often than not, creating a situation where the only choices are "sweep" or "despair" is a poor idea. That's a recipe for an emotionally fragile team.

But third, the traditional formula for regular season success in college hockey is sweep at home, split on the road. Note that UND accomplished this against us. At the same, we accomplished it against Bemidji. Those results go a long way toward explaining the current standings among the 4 teams competing for the last two home ice spots. Naturally winning the season series with an opponent trumps the home/road angle. It's just that the level of difficulty is a little higher on the road.

If the idea is simply to trade barbs, the above formulation is probably too wordy. But at least for me, the fuller picture is much to be preferred.

Where does all this leave the current Buckeye team? Splitting next weekend's games in Duluth would have to be accepted as "good result," and would keep the hopes alive for home ice. But earning 4 points or more would give us the season series, and would be infinitely preferable.

I agree with your entire analysis of split versus sweep. I don't know that the general case applies as much to your series in Duluth. If your goal is a top-four finish, then I believe that you need more than three points out of next weekend to accomplish that. Suppose that you do split, and you go into the final four games of the regular season tied with UMD in the standings. They play at Bemidji and host MSU to close out the season; you host Minnesota and travel to Madison. The Bulldogs swept in Mankato, so it is likely that they'll be able to take six points off of the Mavericks in Duluth as well. If they can then take any points at all from the Beavers, that would leave you behind the Bulldogs if OSU manages splits with the Gophers and Badgers. Clearly, you're going to need to win at least one of your next three series, and if you're battling head-to-head with UMD, that would seem to be the most advantageous time to take the greater amount of points.

Absolutely correct; I agree with your entire analysis as well. That's why "good result" got its quotation marks, and why winning the Duluth series rather than splitting it would be infinitely preferable.;)

Re: Ohio State vs North Dakota 1/27 - 1/28

It's the very prospect of potential outcomes in Duluth that make the split at home vs. UND an unfavorable result as opposed to a result of contentment, in my view. I think going to Duluth with a three point lead would have been a large positive.

I certainly agree we shouldn't be content with the results of the full weekend. Also agree with the rest of your post in terms of the standings, but that's only part of the story.

Friday night was our best game of the year, at least on home ice. That's something to be savored, although it's important not to let any single win become an ongoing distraction. Further, IMHO, we desperately needed at least one win against UND to put the debacle of last October behind us. That was done, and done in a decisive fashion. Once the season is over, I think Friday's win will be remembered for those reasons, even as some of the other particulars fade into the past.

But yes, the points that were on the table Saturday would have been awfully nice to have in the race for home ice.

There is a difference with what "should" happen and what every coach "wants" to happen. also your "traditional formula for regular season success in college hockey is sweep at home, split on the road" is completely wrong! the formula to a successful season is WINNING. every player and coach, (and fan) should not only want to win, but also believe they can. If that is absent, so is the integrity of your program.
