Ohio State Next Coach?

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Darn, we need to pay Jackie Barto more money. She's on the verge of really building something special with the women's program.

Thanks for the clarification. I saw the $166K figure on the Miami board, so I should have assumed it was wrong.:D

Regarding my earlier disagreement with you, I don't think the gulf was that big. My point was that any Miami person, whether in this thread or to you last weekend, that's saying Ohio State was contacting Miami assistants before even firing Markell is being absurd. If a current assistant--whether at Miami or elsewhere--is the best choice that's one thing. Rushing out to hire an assistant before even firing the existing coach, however, would be "settling" of the highest degree, and that's not how one of the richest athletic departments in the country should conduct business.

As for Blasi, I've stated the chances are slim to none that we'd get him. What I want is for Blasi or someone of his stature to be considered, to be contacted and to be offered. I don't want to go straight for the assistants as if we have no other options. If, at the end of the day, that's the best direction for the program, or even the best we can do, fine. Make the decision and move forward, but I want all options pursued. The AD owes it to the program.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

And from my voluminous viewer mail....

You clearly don't understand that Miami is the premier hockey school in Ohio, and is willing to spend money to continue that. OSU is, and will continue to be, the second rate program in Ohio, regardless of this coaching change.

Miami doesn't HAVE any money to spend. Say this again with me real slow: Miami's athletic department loses 2 dollars for every dollar it generates. There is no cash reserve with which to go to war. There is no cash! Ohio State's check last year from the Big Ten Network (22 million) alone was larger than your entire money losing athletic department.

Yes, you are currently the premier hockey school in Ohio. How long you hold that crown remains to be seen.

On the behalf of the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher’s staff, players, fans and alumni I graciously offer you Don Lucia and company to fulfill your programs coaching needs. :p :D All we ask in return is for your football team to spot us 35 points this upcoming football season..... Even though you will still come back to beat us by 21 at least this way the score will look better in the box score and on ESPN.

Yours Truly

blasi sounds like a long shot, but he's going through a bad divorce there, and could want a change of scenes.

I don't if that info is true but that might be a glimmer of hope for OSU fans. I do like the suggestion of Wayne Wilson at RIT and Mike Hastings, both are excellent coaches and winners.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

I think that Culhane would make a perfect fit for somestateschoolinohio. Let's hope that Rico wouldn't consider such a downhill step in his career and would show more ethic fiber that did Thad "Queen of Denial" Matta ("I'll NEVER LEAVE XAVIER!").

What's bad for Columbus is good for the country...

Brutally bad hockey for Brutus...what's not to like?

Hey, John Cooper is still available! Maybe he was just recast as head coach in the wrong sport for the Horse Chestnuts! Then, Michigan could own them on the ice....oh, wait, the Blue already own them in the only sport that really counts! But still, a great out-of-the-box idea for somestateschoolinohio.

I like it. Hit on all the hot cheerleaders, take the slaps in the face you know are coming, then settle for the fat chick. :p

blasi sounds like a long shot, but he's going through a bad divorce there, and could want a change of scenes. Plus, money talks a lot. especially when ohio state could more than double his salary. Also, the resources he would have at osu are far greater than miami. I'm not putting miami down at all, because their program is unreal, but what he could build at osu is greater than what is at miami.

Your first post - and you throw out that Blasi is going through a bad divorce???? Evidence??

You obviously don't follow much college hockey, do you? In the last 12 meetings, OSU is 5-7 against UM, so I wouldn't say you "own" us. Nice try, though. If you want to talk about ownership, check out our record against UM in football/men's & women's basketball with the current coaches (Tressel/Matta/Foster).

As for the topic at hand, I had made a comment about hiring an assistant earlier and am surprised I wasn't villified like Sterling. At the end of the day, we all just want the best guy for the job, and we want someone who will get us to the level that programs like Miami, Michigan, etc. are at. There's no excuse for Ohio State to not be able to get to that level. I realize and agree that for us to get to that level, it will take more of a commitment from the athletic department than they have made in the past (ie. no more kicking our team out of their own building for hs wrestling, or better yet, build them their own arena). I have to believe the athletic department is willing to make that commitment.

Bitter UM folks...clinging to their last remaining sport they compete in...

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Interesting article for JM haters...kinda makes you feel guilty...

Key quote in the article. "OSU's conference-champion men's basketball team had one sellout this season."

No way Blasi takes the OSU job. If & when he leaves, he's going to Michigan, Minnesota or BU.

OSU is the last "sleeping giant" in college hockey now that Notre Dame has returned to prominence and has a new barn on the way. Its an attractive job for that reason. OSU just needs a coach that can recruit.

The writing was on the wall for Markell earlier in the season when they played DU in the Blue Jackets Arena and less than 500 fans showed up.

I think what the article is saying is that this situation is a bit more complicated than a coach dragging down a blossoming program...If OSU wants a champion team they need to commit to doing what it takes to have one. This could be the next step in that direction or it could be all for show.

Either way, the mis-steps of the Dept. in the past have facilitated OSU's stagnation and they deserve part of the blame for the last 5 years. We should hold them accountable as well, especially if they don't commit to the type of change they give lip-service to in this press release.

Minnesota, BU/BC and DU would be the likely locations for a post-Miami Blasi. Michigan's certainly an attractive job, but leaving for an in-conference rival would kill his Miami legacy. At least in this alum's mind.

I just hope Maturi loses his phone number if Lucia is not renewed after next season (I think that's all he has left on his deal). Of course Dean Blais will likely be on speed dial as well.
