I expect it's like calling Ohio State "the Bucks" every now and then.
Ohio State completed the sweep in St. Paul earlier today, beating St. Thomas by a final score of 7-1. Kenzie Hauswirth scored the game's first goal to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. Ohio State would get the first two goals of the second frame as Jenn Gardiner and Olivia Mobley both lit the lamp to give the Bucks a 3-0 lead. The Tommies got a goal from Allie Monrean to cut the OSU advantage to two goals at 3-1. Ohio State's Kiara Zanon would score the final goal of the second period to put the Bucks up 4-1 at the final intermission. Ohio State got three more goals in the third period from Kiara Zanon, Kelsey King, and Cayla Barnes to make the final score 7-1. The Buckeyes outshot the Tommies 45-21. Amanda Thiele got the start in net for Ohio State and stopped 20 of the 21 shots she faced in the win. St. Thomas netminder Olivia King stopped 38 of the 45 shots she faced. After starting the season with six straight road games, the Buckeyes will finally return home to the friendly confines of the OSU Ice Rink to take on the 4th ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers. This "murderers row" of games for St. Thomas (Minnesota last weekend, Ohio State this weekend), continues next weekend as they will host #1-ranked Wisconsin.

I happen to know a couple of St. Thomas alums. I have never, ever heard them refer to their sports teams as the Toms.

Ohio State took game one earlier tonight in this top five matchup with the 4th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers 4-3 in what was a very entertaining game to watch, regardless of which side you were on. Ohio State took leads, but each time the Bucks got a lead, the Gophers had an answer and tied it. It took overtime to decide this one. Hannah Bilka opened the scoring for Ohio State in the first period to give the Bucks a 1-0 lead. Not to be denied, Minnesota's Abbey Murphy lit the lamp later in the period to knot things up at 1-1. Ohio State's Sofie Lundin found the back of the net with a minute and change to go in the first period to send the Bucks into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead. Neither team scored in the middle frame, so the teams went into the second intermission with Ohio State leading Minnesota 2-1. Minnesota's Ella Huber scored the first goal of the third period to tie things up at 2-2. Jenn Gardiner answered later in the period to put the Buckeyes back on top 3-2. The lead was short-lived as Abbey Murphy scored her second goal of the game a mere thirty seconds later to tie things at 3-3. Neither team would score again in regulation so overtime was needed to decide this one. Less than two minutes into the overtime, Ohio State's Jenn Gardiner scored her second goal of the game to win it for Ohio State. The Bucks outshot the Gophers in this one 51-28 with Buckeye backstop Raygan Kirk stopping 25 of the 28 shots she faced to get the win. Skylar Vetter got the start for Minnesota and stopped 47 of the 51 shots she faced. The teams wrap up their series tomorrow at 3:00 pm EST.

It was a gritty win for the Buckeyes as Minnesota kept coming back with the equalizer goals. Abbey Murphy does what Abbey Murphy does and the best chance for Ohio State to complete a sweep is to find away to shut her down. I'll be honest, Murphy's first goal was an amazing shot as she curled around the defense and got the far top corner. We shall see what the Muzzinator comes up with to try and counter her.

Move Over, Hollywood. Step Aside, Broadway. Check Out Opening Night at the OSU Ice Rink. Time to roll out the Scarlet & Gray Carpet.
Two star-studded teams took the ice. The players certainly didn't disappoint. The paparazzi were richly rewarded with highlight reel plays.
The Ice Rink is a small, ugly building. But in our world, it's a big stage. We put on really big shows. Not that we should rename it Jardiance Arena. But this is a little building with big stories to tell. Tonight's game between the Buckeyes & Gophers is one of those stories.
Minnesota Honorable Mention: Gopher Assist Earners
Spoiler Alert: Abbey Murphy stole the show for Minnesota.
But this is no one-woman show; Minnesota has a strong supporting cast. The first scoring play began with a crisp up-ice pass from Maggie Nicholson. Abbey launched the second tally herself, dealing the puck to Emily Zumwinkle. Emily unloaded an eminently tip-able shot; Ella Huber was happy to provide the tip. The third began with a diligent backcheck form Nelli Laitinen. Nelli broke up a Buckeye rush with her left skate, allowing Josefin Bouveng to embark on a counter-attack. From there -- you guessed it -- Abbey again.
Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Hannah Bilka & Cayla Barnes
The Buckeyes did do a few Preview Performances prior to Opening Night. The trouble on the home front was that all six of the previews were staged in opponents' arenas. But a very nice thing happened during the extended road trip. Hannah & Cayla became True Buckeyes. At the start of the weekend, Hannah was the lead scorer and Cayla the leading shot blocker.
In tonight's contest, Bilka contributed two scoring points; while Barnes was noticeably dynamic on the blue line.
We're certainly aware that it stings to lose players in the transfer portal. But our friends from Chestnut Hill should know these former Eagles still soar. Perhaps there's a tiny bit of solace in that.
#3 Star: (tie) Sofie Lundin, Ohio State; and Emma Peschel, Ohio State
The Lundin/Peschel Goal was a true team effort. Just who took the successful shot, Sofie or Emma? Turns out that Lundin's stick made the last, best contact with the puck. The 2nd Assist went to Joy Dunne, who heroically won a fierce battle to center the puck.
Oh, and just for the record, Peschel had the 2nd Assist on the GWG. Her breakout pass earned the scoring point. Her contribution was momentarily overlooked, because she was on the bench before the puck hit the twine. No plus earned, but the assist absolutely counts.
#2 Star: Abbey Murphy, Minnesota
Abbey Murphy has to be the most appealing villain in college hockey history. The charming rink rouge has always displayed True Grit. She's ruthless; she's content to Live and Let Die. Plus, the new and improved Abbey is now shrewd. Butch and Sundance would be proud; the Buckeyes did feel The Sting. Particularly on the wrap-around goal that tied the game at 3 all.
On this night Abbey & the Gophers came up one goal short. But the Abbey Murphy Show is going to sell a lot of tickets, and have a long successful run.

We know that Jennifer Garner carries a Capital One Card. But what's in Jenn Gardiner's Wallet? The full range of hockey skills.
In the first minute of the game, Gardiner rang a shot off the post. The fine follow-up by Hannah Bilka gave the Buckeyes the lead right up front.
But Jenn's biggest contributions came in crunch time. As time was winding down in the third period, Bilka had the Primary Assist & the crafty Gardiner found the 5 hole.
Jenn saved the very best for last. On a 2 on 1 rush, Gardiner carried the puck into the attack zone. The Gopher Defender took away the pass. Remembering the previous Gardiner Goal, the Gopher Keeper slammed the 5 hole shut. Jenn's response? She nailed the upper left hand corner of the net to secure the win.

Ohio State completed the sweep earlier today by a final score of 6-5. While this one did not require extra time, it was just as hard-fought and entertaining as Friday night's game. The Golden Gophers came out flying in this one and scored the first two goals of the game to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Minnesota's goals were scored by Ella Huber and Josefin Bouveng. Not sure what was said during the intermission, but Ohio State came out on fire in the second period and scored three goals within the first nine minutes of the period to take a 3-2 lead. Jocelyn Amos got the Buckeyes on the board. Jenn Gardiner found the back of the net to tie it, then Jocelyn scored again to give Ohio State the lead. Later in the second period, Minnesota's Nelli Laitinen found the back of the net to tie it at 3-3. With time running out in the second period, Ohio State's Sloane Matthews lit the lamp to give the Bucks a 4-3 lead heading into the final frame. Nelli Laitinen scored her second goal of the game early in the third period to tie it at 4-4. Emma Peschel and Stephanie Markowski would score to give the Buckeyes a 6-4 lead. Minnesota got a late goal from Peyton Hemp to pull to within one at 6-5, but the Gophers could not get the equalizer and that is how the game ended. Ohio State outshot Minnesota in this one 52-28. Amanda Thiele got the start in net for the Bucks and stopped 23 of the 28 shots she faced. Skylar Vetter stopped 46 of the 52 shots she faced for the Gophers. Ohio State will travel to Bemidji next weekend to take on the Beavers. Minnesota will return home to host Minnesota State on Friday, then will head to Mankato to take on the Mavericks on their ice for Saturday's game.

Technically the Minnesota Power Play was 3 for 5. But in actuality, 4 Gopher goals directly stemmed from the 5 PP opportunities. Peyton Hemp gave Minnesota its 5th Goal; that one explains the discrepancy.
As regulation time was winding down, staggered penalties -- one on each club -- resulted in a 4x4 situation. Down by two, the Gophers pulled their goalie. In the attack zone, the dominant Gopher 5x4 PP went back to work. Success came when Peyton found the twine. But because the net behind them was empty, it counts as an Extra Attacker Goal rather than a PP Goal.
In practical terms, Minnesota converted an astonishing 80% of their man advantage chances. It wasn't enough on Saturday. But Ohio State and the rest of the WCHA have been put on notice. Taking penalties against Minnesota is risky business indeed.

Friday's #1 Star earns another mention. In the rematch, all Gardiner did was score once and bag two assists. That completed a six point weekend. On Saturday Jenn was +4 for the game, which led all players.
The Saturday goal came in the middle of the crucial three goal explosion. With the Buckeyes putting on heavy pressure, a Gopher defender tried to clear the puck. Gardiner said No, and blasted the puck into the Minnesota net.
#3 Star: Stephanie Markowski, Ohio State
Stephanie is another Transfer Treasure, coming to OSU by way of Clarkson. After completing a degree in Potsdam, she decided to continue her Pursuit of Excellence at The Ohio State University. We're glad she did.
Among other reasons, it turned out that Markowski had the final goal on Saturday. Pinching in down low, Stephanie slammed home a rebound. As she joined her teammates to celebrate, I enjoyed her "cat that ate the canary" facial expression. And why not? The canary tastes pretty good when it's your first goal as a Buckeye.
Good thing Stephanie found the Mark. That insurance goal matured into the game winning goal.
#2 Star: Nelli Laitinen, Minnesota
We've probably lavished enough praise on the Gopher PP; emphasizing the truly outstanding team effort. But it should be noted that it was Nelli who pulled the trigger on 2 of the 3 conventional PP goals.
#1 Star: Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State
Scoring 3 goals in less than 5 minutes, the Buckeyes transformed a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 advantage. And Jocelyn was at the Heart Of It All, registering both the first & third tallies. With a total of six shots for the game, Amos led all shooters. Only Sloane Matthews matched that total.
After the thrilling pyrotechnics, the game reverted to Friday form, with the two clubs exchanging goals. There was much hockey still to be played. But without the Jocelyn generated big bang, the Buckeyes probably don't win this one.
Because Amos is an incoming Freshman, this is the first time I've recognized her with a Star. It won't be the last. Since landing in Columbus, her body of work has been nothing short of a celestial event. A true Freshman steps right into the role of 1st Center? We've got a good thing going here.
Jocelyn hails from Ailsa Craig, Ontario. And just to top things off, I'll mention that she's an alum of the London Devilettes. That can count as another little whiff of Halloween.

Ohio State got first period goals from Jocelyn Amos, Delaney Fleming, and Sloane Matthews to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. It was all Buckeyes in the second period as Ohio State added four more goals, two each from Joy Dunne and Kiara Zanon, to take a 7-0 lead. The Beavers got a late goal from Kayla Santi to make the score 7-1 at the final intermission. Ohio State added two more goals in the third period. Joy Dunne would complete the hat trick and the final goal was scored by Sofie Lundin to make the final score 9-1. The Bucks outshot the Beavers 49-13 in this one. Ohio State netminders Raygan Kirk and Quinn Kuntz combined to stop 12 of the 13 shots they faced in the win. Beaver backstop Abbie Thompson stopped 40 of the 49 shots she faced. The teams will conclude their series tomorrow at 4:00 pm EST (3:00 pm CST).

Yes it was! I didn't think we would get her back until the Wisconsin series.

Jocelyn Amos found the back of the net in the second period to send Ohio State into the final intermission with a 2-0 lead. The Bucks would get three more goals in the third period from Olivia Mobley, Joy Dunne, and Emma Peschel to make the final score 5-0. The Buckeyes outshot the Beavers in this one 46-11. Amanda Thiele got the start for Ohio State and stopped all 11 shots she faced in the win. Eva Filippova started in net for Bemidji State and stopped 41 of the 46 shots she faced. Both teams are off next weekend. Ohio State will host Wisconsin in a big 1 vs 2 showdown on 11/17-11/18. That same weekend, the Beavers will host Minnesota State.
Quite a weekend for Dunne Version 4.0!
I only saw the 2nd game. But her 4th Goal on the weekend was a beauty. Joy blew through the Bemidji 'D' on a dynamic rush up the right side, cut across the slot, then beat the Bemidji goalie blocker side. Filippova is a good keeper, but Dunne made it look easy.

We're into the bye week and hopefully we'll be fully rested and healed for what will be the most important and anticipated home series of the season hosting the Badgers.
I think it will be extremely intense and physical as it's being called The Revenge Series. I actually have two deer hunting buddies wanting to attend knowing the atmosphere will be awesome! If we can earn the home sweep I would see no reason for us not to regain the number one ranking.

MacKenna Webster will be ice hockey full time now. The field hockey team didn’t make the NCAA tournament. As great a season they had they just came up short. I figured they were the first team out. Great season Field Hockey. Go Bucks!
