Ohio State Buckeyes 2023-24 The Muzzinator Gonna Muzzinate!!

Figured I'd take a look:

Good news is Webster is leading the OSU team in both goals and assists. And the team has a 6-1 record so far.

The bad news, apparently, is that schedule hasn't been tough, etc. The only ranked team they've played is Louisville, and that was their one loss. As of the national poll a week ago, they had moved up to #18, up from 'unranked'. But that was before the Louisville loss. Next poll comes out Tuesday. They're about to start the B1G part of the schedule, and there are five B1G teams ranked ahead of them. So they have their work cut out for them. 18 teams made the NCAA tournament last year.

I'll admit I'm not much of a follower of field hockey but some have told me Louisville has a very strong program which explains why that game was a challenge but we host Michigan on Friday and no matter which sport, any game against Michigan in Columbus is intense.
Obviously we OSU ice hockey fans cringe at the thought of Webster possibility getting an injury with her always playing full pedal to the metal but I saw no concern from the Muzzinator at the game.

We're #1 in the USA Today hockey magazine poll.
Somebody recognizes greatness when they see it!

Hmmm...

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey announced today [September 13] that the USA Hockey/The Rink Live NCAA Division I college hockey polls will begin next Tuesday (Sept. 19) with the women’s pre-season poll, while the men’s pre-season poll will be released on Oct. 2.

and

But they did publish their poll 27 times last season, and Ohio State was ranked #1 in 23 of them, including the pre-season poll; Minnesota twice, and Yale once. Oh, and Wisconsin just once.

Nope. Neither does Minnesota for that matter. Really the complete list of D1 schools that were even an option to do the double were Ohio State, Penn State, Boston College, Maine, Boston U, New Hampshire, Quinnipiac, Northeastern, the Ivies (which don't really do transfers) and I suppose Lindenwood. Ohio State a clear frontrunner in that they're Top 25 in field hockey and Top 2 in ice hockey.

When I was in high school many many years ago we had girls field hockey but when we started soccer it killed our field hockey, all the girls wanted to do soccer instead.
I worry about Webster as I remember well in HS the occasional girl on crutches or in a leg cast from field hockey. Given the love between Ohio State and Michigan in all their sports there may well be some walking wounded after tomorrow's game.

To be honest I saw that release date as well but since the ranking announcement was posted on the teams official FB page I figured somebody had inside info. After all, if it's on FB it has to be true, right? LOL

The only thing I see on Facebook is the WCHA coach's poll from earlier this week. And that was a tie with Wisconsin for #1.

OK, I'll take the hit for a massive senior moment. After going back to it I see now it was a post from LAST year that somehow ended up on my feed today. Jeez, talk about embarrassing and I don't even have thinner as an excuse like Timothy!

Quote from one of our player about this season -

"We're going to be fast, we're going to be physical. We're going to have four full lines coming at them. We're really deep."

There's a lot of excitement and energy with this team and now that the Muzzinator is going to roll four lines instead of three with the depth she has she'll no doubt grind the opposition down!

Well a disappointing first game. I saw a LOT of rust on our part with sloppy passing, giving up goals on two PP's and how many missed shots on a wide open net with the last shooting miscue giving Colgate the opportunity for the winning goal.
From my perspective this game was ours to lose.
Hopefully we get the split.

Tough loss tonight for Ohio State in this battle between two top-five teams. Colgate got two power play goals in the first ten minutes of the game from Elyssa Biederman and Kristyna Kaltounkova to go up 2-0 at the end of one period of play. Ohio State pulled to within 2-1 in the second period on a goal from Sloane Matthews and that is how the second frame ended. Ohio State tied it in the third period 2-2 on a goal from Hannah Bilka. Colgate got a goal from Emma Pais with less than a minute to play to win it 3-2. The Buckeyes outshot the Raiders 32-25. Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopped 22 of the 25 shots she faced in the loss. Colgate backstop Kayle Osborne stopped 30 of the 32 shots she faced to get the win. The two teams wrap up their series tomorrow at 3:00 pm EST.

First period in the books and Ohio State looked like Ohio State should. Controlled the puck, got the first goal and just a night and day difference in how they looked yesterday. Coach must have really lit a fire under them. We start the 2nd on a PP so we'll see if they have that working too.

Well that was a game today, we looked MUCH better but still missed a few goals we should have had. Colgate's coach made the gutsy call to pull their goalie on the last PP and it paid off big for them. I wish though they would have showed replay on that last tripping call, I couldn't see how legit it was seeing it live and the camera didn't always keep up with the action. It seemed they were letting them play in the 3rd and why start calling so late in the game.
Regardless, we got the win and the split and know what we need to do when we play Duluth next.

The Buckeyes took game two earlier today to earn a split with 4th-ranked Colgate on the road. In today's game, it was the Buckeyes who jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Sloane Matthews and Kiara Zanon. Matthews' goal gave Ohio State a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Zanon's goal came in the second period and sent the Buckeyes to the second intermission with a 2-0 lead. Colgate rallied in the third period to tie it at 2-2 on goals from Neena Brick and Kristyna Kaltounkova. In overtime, Ohio State's Jenna Buglioni scored the game-winner to make the final score 3-2. Ohio State outshot Colgate 44-33. Buckeye backstop Raygan Kirk stopped 31 of the 33 shots she faced to get the win. Colgate netminder Hannah Murphy stopped 41 of the 44 shots she faced in the loss. Ohio State is off next weekend before opening conference play at Minnesota-Duluth on 10/13 - 10/14. The Raiders will host Penn State next weekend.

Just looked at the game stats and Colgate's last PP is listed as a cross check but the commentator said it was tripping. No wonder I was confused where the trip was.

That announcer was brutal the entire weekend. Reading a pronunciation guide seems to be a lost art in broadcasting these days. It was like fingernails on a chalkboard listening to that clown butcher our team names all weekend.

As my good friend, Klbaum1077 likes to say, "You can't sweep if you don't win on Friday night." Ohio State took care of business earlier today at Amsoil Arena, defeating Minnesota-Duluth, 5-2. The Bulldogs scored first in this one to go up 1-0 on a first period goal from Olivia Wallin. Later in the first period, Buckeye defender Hadley Hartmetz would score two goals within a minute-and-a-half of each other to put Ohio State up 2-1 and they never looked back. After going into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead, Ohio State's Jenna Buglioni lit the lamp to put the Bucks up 3-1. UMD would get a goal later in the second period from Reece Hunt to bring the Bulldogs to within 3-2 heading into the final frame. Ohio State would get a goal from Sloane Matthews in the third period to go up 4-2, then Hadley Hartmetz got an empty netter for the hat trick to seal the deal. Hannah Bilka got the assist on Hartmetz' goal in what was a wonderfully selfless play as she could have skated down and scored the goal herself. Great to see this team coming together! The Bucks outshot the Dogs in this one 36-12 with Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele stopping 10 of the 12 shots she faced in the win. Bulldog backstop Eve Gascon stopped 31 of the 35 shots she faced (36th shot was empty-net goal). The two teams are back at it tomorrow with game time at 4:00 pm EST. For those in the Columbus area, there will be a watch party at the O on Lane across the street from the OSU Ice Rink.
