Ohio State - 2014/2015

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

The Buckeyes are at home this weekend vs the UNO Mavericks. Anyone going? Mrs 86 and I are going to a HS Football Playoff game tonight, but we will be there tomorrow night. Cannot wait to get to the Schott!

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

UNO gets the sweep. Tough weekend for the Buckeye Icers. Next up for Bucks is a home and home with Mrs 86's BGSU Falcons. We will be a house divided next weekend. We're heading to the OSU Women's game Friday night, but we will be at the men's game Saturday at home. If you see a couple with the dude wearing an OSU hockey sweater and the wife in a BG sweater, it's probably us! Go Bucks!

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

OSU plagued by passing problems and not pulling the trigger. You can only cycle the puck for so long before someone takes it away for you. Let's face it you can't always try to set up the perfect shot while the clock is winding down. Shoot the dam* thing and bring the wings in on the net for rebounds!!

That is exactly what I observed Saturday vs UNO ... passing/puck management issues, and guys not shooting the puck when they were open to do so. Shoot the puck and go to the net for rebounds.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Buckeyes take game one in this weekend's series vs Bowling Green by a final score of 3-2. Anthony Greco scored the GWG with less than a minute to play in the game. Matthew Weis and Tyler Lundey scored the other two goals for the Buckeyes. Hopefully a big road win over a real good Bowling Green team (7-2-1 coming in and 2nd place in the WCHA) will get this team going. Bucks go for the sweep tomorrow at the Schott!

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

An unbelievably ugly game for the buckeyes! They way they allowed BG to score, especially falling asleep on BG's last goal. Their shots were mostly wide all night, when they had rushes up ice with extra men they always passed the puck when approaching the net and the passes were terrible and mistimed blowing great scoring chances.
I don't know how we pulled this one out our a*ss and I'm glad be won but it was ugly!

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Ugly win last night but a win is what counts. Having seen them for the first time last night this is what I came away with and why I think they struggled so far. They are not strong on the puck its way to easy to get the puck from them. They didn't pass the puck well at all there were times where they couldn't even make two passes in a row. Even when good passes were made they didn't catch them very well. They don't finish chances I don't know how many times they had the puck in the slot with a clear path and shot it wide. Tanner missed a wide open net in the 2nd period now Burke made some solid saves as well but they have to start finishing around the net. This team don't have the snipers they did last year so dirty goals are going to be what this team needs and they did get 3 of them to win the game in the end. On defense they leave the back side wide open its like the ice is titled to one side and they have no knowledge of who is back side. They give up the blue line way to easy which caused the 2 BG goals. Rebounds have been a problem from what I can gather from listening and on the first goal last night Tomkins left a juicy one. They did a better job in the last 2 periods of clearing the rebounds though.

That is pretty much what I have seen in the games I have been to regarding our puck skills ... poor puck management. This team just does not handle the puck well, and unless that improves, they will have a tough time winning hockey games in the Big Ten this season. Poor puck management was one of the reasons they could not finish the sweep this weekend with last night's loss. Hopefully Coach Rohlik and his staff will address that in practice. We have to be better with the puck.

Looking at your conference, games shouldn't be too hard to win, except maybe against Minnesota. Everyone looks pretty weak. :)

Yeah, it's a rare down year for Big Ten Hockey when you consider the teams in the league and all the National Championships that have been won by Big Ten teams.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Bucks getting whipped 2-0 on home ice tonight. Still half the game left, but come on guys!

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

3-0 Michigan State in the third period. Rohlik can't be happy with this performance. I'm sorry, but it's going to be a long season if we're getting owned at home by Michigan State. My gosh. What is going on with this team?

So many little things wrong that would take forever to go over and explain. There's just something missing to bring it all together and ignite this team and I'm starting to wonder if the coaching staff should share some of the blame?
If you look at it, when we're on the puck instead of making every effort to keep it in our offensive zone how many times tonight did you see the defensemen drop back and play the puck just outside the blue line to cushion against a possible up ice rush in case the Spartans beat them to the puck?
Almost every time we bring the puck up ice into the Spartans end instead of trying to go straight for the net even with only one defender between them and the net we veer off to a corner and try to "set something up". Only once, late in the 2nd period did we actually click on a play and have a really good scoring chance on the doorstep.
The consistency in which this is happening is not individuals on the ice making bad decisions, this is a fundamental shift in what is being drilled into them by the coaching staff. I don't know if it's because they are trying to compensate because of a lack of key players like Dzingle or possibly making the team pace itself more so they don't run out of gas.
But when you see them light up at the end of the game and make a serious push you see they are certainly capable of making plays and showing intensity.
I think coach needs to lighten up the leash and have them play like that much earlier in the game. So what if it open opportunities for turnovers or us running out of gas, if you don't win the game playing conservative what does it matter how you lost?
A team always on the attack ALWAYS has a better chance than a team sitting back until the last minutes.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

The first 10 minutes of last nights game the Buckeyes controlled the pace of the game and the forecheck caused some problems but they were not able to capitalize on a couple of rebounds. The game turned at the 10 minute mark when Tomkins was forced to make a great pillow save off a mistake by the Buckeyes. From that point on until the lastn8 minutes Michigna State controlled everything. Right now the Buckeyes are way to passive In the offensive zone not crashing the net after rebounds. Hildbrand left more rebounds last night than he didmin the 5 games they played against state all of last year. Some one on this team has to become a leader that they are lacking right now,

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Tonight they did it right and look at the results!
I'm glad to see Cristofoli finally back in the lineup. He's made some good plays in the past and generally shows the energy this team seemed to be lacking lately. Hope he's kept in the lineup for awhile as he tries much harder than DaSilva.

Clark is terrible and needs to be on the bench. He turns the puck over a lot and is out of position more than I have ever seen a defenseman. Cant count how many times last night he was beat like a drum and he turned the puck over so much last night.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Last night was the Buckeye team that we saw most of last year. They played great defense cleared rebounds that Tomkins left. The forecheck was outstanding they forced MSU into mistakes that lead to scoring chances and goals. They went to the net hard which caused the first and last goals. The PP goal was a thing of beauty as well. Tomkins was outstanding getting the shutout.

I didn't see it that way and even on his worst day he's better than DaSilva who is a 6'5" guy who's afraid to hit people.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Im not a big fan of DaSilva either but he don't turn the puck over as much as Clark.
DaSilva never takes anyone OFF the puck. It's endless that he tries using his reach when going shoulder to shoulder with the guy with the puck instead of hitting or wiping him into the boards to force the turnover.
I'd still say Clark was an advantage for us considering the score was pretty much reversed from the previous night's game! I think he brought energy and push that made his teammates play up to match.
