Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

If you owned a house near any of the events, you likely could have done like some of the Londoners did. Take a four week vacation, and charge the renter enough to pay for your vacation. And a couple months of mortgage payments.

We own a home about 40 minutes from lake Placid-back in 1980 we rented it to a competing European team. Financially it was fine but they did do a bit of damage that needed some repairs. If the Olympics were ever held ther again it would be very doubtful we would rent again.

just did a quick search for Dulles -> Rio for a week's stay Monday - Monday. $1,000. Guess it will be closer to $1,500 - $2,000 in four years. Guess it's another TV Olympics.
Rio's got some great slums. I'll bet you can get a cheaper deal.

Amazing how quickly the excitement gets transferred to something new. Hard to believe that it was only two weeks ago yesterday that we were celebrating the closing ceremonies! :)

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Okay, so this post isn't about the summer olympics nor about 2012, so it should fit right in, eh?

For some reason, I was reminded of the Jamaican bobsled team in the winter Olympics (hey, it's not as weird as it might sound, since much of the success of a bobsled team is in its start, and Jamaica has some of the world's best sprinters). Some people may even have seen the movie Cool Running with John Candy as their coach?

Anyway, in the late 1990s, we lived in a small town in Wyoming just across from the Utah border, and our town's Chamber of Commerce (both of them ;) ) contacted the Jamaica Olympics federation and offered to host their bobsled team for training (our town had an elevation of about 6,700 feet while Salt Lake City is "only" about 4,500 feet*). They accepted and every now and then we'd run into them at the Rec center, lifting or using the hot tub. I think the black population of our town increased by 25% while they were there.

* We'd really notice the difference in altitude when we went into SLC for an occasional family vacation. You felt so invigorated, and you could do so much more exercise than back home, it was surprising to me how big an effect it had in person compared to what I'd have expected when I heard other people talk about it.

Where I really noticed the difference was when we first moved there. We'd only been in town about six weeks when we were part of a volunteer team that went to repair and upgrade the town's yurts in the Uinta Mountains. I'd been a flatlander my whole life until then, had not even been there long enough to acclimate to 6,700 feet, yet there I am at 9,800 feet trying to haul a cast-iron wood burning stove. Yowtch. Walk two feet, rest....walk two feet, rest. Well, maybe I exaggerate slightly (yeah, the fish I caught keeps getting bigger over the years too!), but not much.

One more image of him layered into that pic would have been just eerie.

It's not already? There's kind of a Human Centipede thing going on there as it is.
I just meant that she was found with four bullet holes, and pictured three times on that bullet poster already, once more would have been dang near prophetic.
