USA women basketball won their 39th straight game, beat Canada 91-48. They'll take on Australia in the semi-finals.

I still haven't understood why there's so much talk about changing the men's team to take Team USA back to college players, but never any of that talk on the men's side where the talent gap is even more lopsided.

In other track news-

in the 1500m-
Gold- Algeria
Silver- Manzano- USA
Bronze- Morroco

So I was totally wrong about who would win AND the US got a medal in a distance they have not in some time. Pretty awesome.

Mens High Jump
Gold- UKHOV- Russia
Silver- Kynard- USA
Bronze- 3 way tie.

Again, a great medal for the US.

Not a bad track day.

My guess is that the reasoning is similar to soccer: the men's game is quite developed world-wide, with pro leagues in many countries and lots of high-level talent everywhere, and they also have a separate country-by-country soccer tournament every four years (the World Cup) available for the men. However, there are very few pro opportunities for women around the world, if they only had 3 over age 23 then most countries' talent is gone, they just don't have the depth and breadth on the women's side.

Even for the US team, they can't make it on the WNBA alone, every player on the USWNT also plays overseas, be it Europe or Turkey or Russia. Give them a few decades and the rest of the world will catch up.

Nice little blurb on NBC's site about Manzano- that's the US's first medal since '68. And it was CLOSE.

With him and Centrowitz (who finsihed 4th, getting beat by .07sec) and Rupp, middle and long distance running is on a rise for the US.

May be a long shot, but it would be great to see a marathon medal!

5000m qualifying is done- and another strong pair of runs for US runners- 3 qualified for the next round- including 10k Silver Galen Rupp. Heat 1 was apparently very straegic, since heat 2 was about 20 seconds faster.

And for those who run, 13:30 is amazing for a 5k- I've never finished in twice that time.

Daimian Warner- 1925

two more events today- high jump at 1pm EST, and 400m at 4pm EST.

Who will be able to claim Worlds Best all around Athelete?

Men's Water Polo: Montenegro is up 7-5 on Spain at the half. The winner of this game would play the winner of Croatia/USA, although I would say Croatia is very heavily favoured due to pool play results (of course I said the same about yesterday's Australia/USA game).

49 years ago as a fairly competitive high school runner-I was able to run my best 5000 meters in a little under 15:50. I weighed about 137 then and trained by running over 100 miles per week. Now the Ethiopian women can beat that time by over a minute easily.:eek:

Croatia is beating the USA 7-2 in men's water polo at the end of the 3rd. Five goals in a period isn't unheard of (especially with the shot clock), but unlikely against this Croatia team.

womens 400m hurdle
Gold Russian
Silver USA- Demus
Bronze- Czeck

It was actually a very fast race, setting a new record for Great Britian. Very close finish- a stumble by the leader gave deamus a late opportunity, which she closed it to 0.07 sec.

200m Womans final
Gold- Felix- USA
Silver- Fraiser-Price- Jamaica
Bronze- Jetta- USA

It was an interesting mix of specialists- 400 v 100 vs 200 specialists. In the end, it was the 200 specailist to win, followed by a pair of 100m.

Awesome time by Felix, under 22 seconds! Olympic record, I think....EDIT: or maybe not. Still great race for her!

Can't wait to see it. Margin of almost two tenths. That's HUGE these days.

US was 1-3-5, Jamaica 2-4.
