10-5 final for Women's Water Polo ITA vs. GBR. The UK goes to relegation, while Italy faces either Spain or the USA, depending upon the outcome of the USA-China game.

The only way that China stays out of relegation is if they beat the USA by 7 goals.

According to both wikipedia and london2012, all 8 teams in women's qualify for the quarters.

And, is the tiebreaker head-to-head or goal differential? If it's head-to-head, Hungary has already clinched 3rd in the group. If it's goal differential, the Chinese women would have to win by 5 goals.

I don't see anything on nbcolympics that indicates that the 4th place team in each group is immediately placed in consolation matches. In fact, under the "Brackets" section of the Standings & Draws, there are 4 quarterfinal matches leading towards 2 semifinal matches; under the Results & Schedules, there are 4 women's quarterfinal matches listed for August 5th... something that can only happen if all 8 teams qualify.

I can see your rationale that the Chinese would have to win by 7 goals to overcome the goal differential, but I figured you had the critical thinking skills to (1) see that Hungary only has 2 games played listed right now, (2) recognize that their game against Spain would have already completed, and (3) add that into their existing goal differential, reducing China's necessary margin to 5 goals.

So, maybe instead of NBC=FAIL, it should read FD08=FAIL

Alright, I'll give you that one. They just decided not to update it from the 2008 format. I mean, the competition format never gets updated, does it?

But, there were two other spots on nbcolympics that had this year's format and two other sites which also had the correct format. It's not that difficult to do a little bit of browsing, is it?

USA beats China 7-6. They'll probably be playing Italy, regardless of format.

That was sick. She sat in 4th, 3rd, and 2nd the whole race and then when they got to the last lap or so she blew everyone away.

Wow. A tremendous finish in the women's triathlon this morning on NBCSports. Spirig of Switzerland beats Norden of Sweden in a true photo finish, crossing the tape maybe a couple inches in front. It took 10 minutes for official results to be announced.
