The "gymnast who I say should have been rewarded" was not in the competition. My comparison between 3 bad/1 good vs. 1 bad/3 good was just a thought experiment. It turns out that Raisman was pretty bad at 2 events (uneven and balance beam), so even after dropping her beam score, she still had the 14.333 hanging around her neck.

Mustafina looked like a wimp, Ally could take her and steal her medal. If she doesn't want to get her hands dirty, that's what Bela is for. He's insane, he'd definately be willing to take a Bronze medal and give it to its' rightful owner.

Yeah, but Bela still has his panties in a bunch about Jordan not making the All Around so he's probably dancing a little jig right now that Aly didn't get a medal.

Wow, Federer - Del Potro 14-14 in the 3rd (deciding) set. only one service break all match so far.

UPDATE: Federer wins, 19-17. He will play the winner of Djokovich - Murray match for gold. Would be weird if Murray wins that one, it will be a replay of Wimbleton final (or if Djokovich wins it will be replay of Wimbleton semi-final.....not so weird after all I guess...)

meanwhile, US women just scored again, 2 - 0 US in soccer now. Morgan had hurt her knee and was subbed off, her sub scored. On to the semi-finals to face the winner of GB - Canada. In the other half of the bracket, France wins and will face the Brazil - Japan winner.

Looks like the coach of the Japan womens' soccer team outsmarted himself. He told his team not to score so that they'd be opposite the US in the draw, only to face Brazil in the quarters and then France, the 3rd best then 2nd best teams.

I guess this wasn't quite the same as the badminton scandal since they did not shoot the ball into their own net to lose on purpose, they merely tied on purpose??

Women's Water Polo: Spain beat Hungary, and they are in the driver's seat for winning 13-11. However, the USA could take the tiebreak if they are able to win by 6 goals over China. The top seed gets a bye, and the second seed must play the winner of Italy-UK.

I remember reading that that happened in a tournament somewhere. Some team was up 1-0 with a few minutes left in the final game of a round, which wasn't enough to qualify them for the next round over their opponent. However, there was a rule that said a victory on penalty kicks automatically counted as a 2-goal win, which would be enough to qualify. So they turned and scored on themselves to tie the game. The other team figured out what was going on and started trying to score on themselves to break the tie, but then the first team started defending their goal! Next thing you know one team was running around furiously trying to score on either goal, while the other team defended them both.

They tied and the team got their penalty kick win to advance. The rules changed the next year.

Wow! a so-called "upset" though based more on reputation than the players' actual current abilities.....


Rogers-Dallhauser, defending gold medalists, lose to the Italians in men's beach volleyball in 2 sets. The 6'10" Italian guy totally dominated Rogers at the net, and the US team shanked enough service receptions to give away the free points that in the end were the determining factor.

The US women's beach volleyball team of Kelsey/Ross advanced. May-Trainor/Walsh Jennings play tomorrow.

Rogers and Dalhausser weren't going to win again, it was obvious. Rogers' body just didn't let him do what he had to, and these other teams are in their early twenties.

Some sports lend themselves to easing up more than others. Harder to cover up in badminton than soccer.
