Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

What system are you playing it on? I have it on 360 and so far I haven't noticed any bugs to speak of. Granted, I'm probably only about halfway through, but so far it all seems to be working fine.

I wasn't sure what to think of it at first, but after opening up all of Kirkwall, it's been great. Only "complaint" I might have is that I'm not really sure what's going on as far as the greater story as a whole. In DAO, after you become a Grey Warden, it's pretty obvious what you're trying to accomplish in the grand scheme of things. In DA2, I have an inkling, but if they've been building up to it, it's pretty subtle. That, and the elves look kinda funky in this one :p

Is the Facebook game worth it? I've never been much for games on Faceook, but I really like the Dragon Age series, so I might be willing to give it a shot. Is it much of a time sink?
I'm not playing the Facebook game for enjoyment. I guess it's alright. But it has the standard Facebook game problems. It limits what you can do by time and the only way to play faster is to pay for it. Which i have no intention of doing.

I am playing on 360, but the issues I listed are on all systems, PC included. I am near the end of Act I on my second playthrough, this time as a mage. I recruited Isabella but I haven't used her yet for fear of the attack speed bug (her friendship buff is 5% atk spd, but it calculates wrong when she leaves the group so you end up losing 5% over and over again and it stacks till you can't ever attack). Bioware posted on one of their forums they are currently testing a fix. I am hopeful that patch fixes most of the issues.

I am playing on 'casual' setting this time through so I can get the missing achievements. Mage's are very OP on this setting. I kill large groups of enemies in two casts.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Some work arounds for DA2 bugs have been found apparently.

1) Exiled Prince DLC Achievement/Trophies. If you delete and redownload the DLC, people have been successful in then getting the achievements. Although you have to go do the tasks again. You won't get them for past playthru's.

2) Isabela "thumbs up" negative speed stacking. If you save with Isabela in the group, in Kirkwall (daytime) you will be fine. It's if you save in a mission, in Kirkwall (night), outside of kirkwall or in Hawke's house with her in the group that you run the risk of getting the bug. Also you can safely save anywhere you want when she is not in the group.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

I hope my game's not screwed. I've had Isabela in my party most of the time since I recruited her, she was one of the first to get maxed out friendship, AND I save all the time, so I'm sure I've saved in the buggy spots. I think the only time she's left my party was for the Deep Roads (but I think that was before she was maxed out friendship), when I'm in Hawke's place (not sure if that counts towards the stacking), and when I entered the Qunari compound a couple of times and she finds some reason to disappear. I guess I should try playing without her and see if I notice anything yet.

So, I'm like 4 years behind, but I'm finally playing through Super Mario Galaxy. Collected all 120 stars with Mario. Luigi's Purple Coins was a supermegabeeeyatch.

We'll see if I have the patience to play all the way through with Luigi...

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Pre-Ordered The Witcher 2 yesterday from gog.com (dev. preferred site). No payment information required and you get a 106mb zip file full of free extra's. Plus it locks in my price at $44.99. If the price happens to go down, I can just not keep my pre-order. Win-win!

Includes: MP3's, Avatar Icons, Wallpapers, Game Art, etc.

Also got 4 free games for signing up with Gog. Although they are nothing special.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

So I have pretty much completed everything in DA2. Beat the game twice (rogue, mage) and do have a Warrior started in Kirkwall. Ended up getting all 55 achievements, so I feel like I have covered all the content at least once.

Only thing left to do is optimize my tactics and try a nightmare run.

I've actually had a lot of fun with the tactics system and have started to really tailor strategy to each character and their available skill trees. As an example, here is the one I setup for Anders as a main healer.

Anders does not get access to the Primal tree. So he has to replace Petrify, Stonefist and Chain Lightning (class-combo attacks) with Crushing Prison and Walking Bomb. So he is a bit limited in his damage for combos. But he is a healer first, so this should be fine.

I would handle casting things like Panacea (40% mana, disables offensive spells), Regroup, and Aid Allies manually. As well as manually deciding when to use Elemental Weapons, since that is based on the staff in use and the enemies weakness to that element.

#1-5 Healing your party is top priority, so the first 4 slots should handle the healing and mana needs of your mage. The 5th slot being reserved so he never runs out of mana to use.

#6-9 Next the healer should protect itself if being attacked directly by clearing their threat number (0-1000), and possibly immobilizing his attackers so others can clear them quickly.

#10-11, #17-18 Take advantage of high ranking targets that immobilized by other classes to complete a cross-class combo for high damage.

#12-13 Take advantage of regular enemies who are immobilized by other classes to deal damage. Since Anders has a limited damage spell pool thats not AoE, these end up being repeats of the Elite+ group. Other casters have more options (chain lightning, stonefist, etc.)

#14-15 Apply some crowd control if there is still a lot of enemies left in the battle.

#16 If all else fails, go ahead and do a standard attack. It also on other casters would avoid using (and wasting) your Elite+ spells on lesser enemies (Petrify for example).

#19 Next priority would be to immobilize dangerous targets, and set up cross-class combos to take them down quickly. In this case it's the BRITTLE status.

#20 Blank. Could be used for any other skill you may want to add, and then move up the list.

01 Self | Health < 50% | Cast Heal (+Greater Heal upgrade)
02 Self | Heath < 25% | Use Health Potion
03 Ally | Health < 50% | Cast Heal (+Greater Heal upgrade)
04 Party | 3 or more Ally Health < 50% | Group Heal
05 Self | Mana < 25% | Use Lyrium Potion
06 Self | Being attacked by melee | Cast Mind Blast
07 Self | Being attacked by 3 or more enemies | Use for next Tactic
08 Self | Being attacked by melee | Cast Cone of Cold (+Deep Freeze upgrade)
09 Enemy | Any | Cast Winters Grasp (+Winters Blast upgrade)
10 Enemy | Rank Elite or Higher | Cast Hex of Torment (+Death Hex upgrade)
11 Enemy | Rank Elite or Higher | Jump To Tactic 17
12 Enemy | Status is STAGGERED | Cast Crushing Prison (+Paralyzing Prison upgrade)
13 Enemy | Status is DISORIENTED | Cast Walking Bomb (+Corrosive Walking Bomb upgrade)
14 Enemy | 5 or More Still Alive | Cast Sleep (+Coma upgrade)
15 Enemy | 5 or More Still Alive | Cast Entropic Cloud (+Death Cloud upgrade)
16 Enemy | Any | Attack
17 Enemy | Status is STAGGERED | Cast Crushing Prison (+Paralyzing Prison upgrade)
18 Enemy | Status is DISORIENTED | Cast Walking Bomb (+Corrosive Walking Bomb upgrade)
19 Enemy | Rank Elite or Higher | Cast Crushing Prison (+Paralyzing Prison upgrade)

In simpler terms get aggro on one character and kite enemies around until they fall down.

Yogcast did a couple videos on it and DA2 looks boring as hell. Might as well go play KOTOR.

That wouldn't really work a) in enclosed spaces with high number of mobs and b) on nightmare difficulty.

On nightmare the higher level mobs can give direction to the lesser ones and focus attacks. Plus there is friendly fire damage to your party.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

So is Tiger Woods 12 golf any good?

I won't pay $60 for it, but maybe at $30 i'd consider it. Also, I noticed the collector's edition comes with 5 extra courses ($10 extra).

For golf games I actually like the idea of add-on content. Adding more courses over time means I don't have to buy a new game each year. Another reason to get this years version is that I am not sure if Augusta Nat'l will continue to be in the games. It could be a 1 year deal.

I still like playing Links LS '00 but its getting pretty dusty.

I just got it last night for 360, but didn't have time/motivation to fire it up. Stay tuned for later today or tomorrow and I'll let you know.

My TW11 got scratched up (not lasered though) and wouldn't read everything, so I said eff it and ponied up the $60.

Edit: found this review, sounds like a lot of fun, and some pretty cool "realism" features this go around as opposed to the -26 scores that were relatively easily attained previously.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

I've only played a couple rounds, but I like what I've seen so far. I feel it plays a bit more realistic, but we'll see if I keep that opinion as I keep playing. I went -6 with Tiger at Augusta, going -5 on the back 9, closing with 5 birdies in a row.

The caddy feature is something I'm not completely for/against yet... I need some more playtime with it. I could see myself disabling it, but I could also see myself keeping it, although when the caddy is "activated" you still always have the chance to make your own shot selection.

The shooting motion seems to be touchier as well, meaning if you shank the shot a little bit, it isn't as forgiving as it used to be. This is especially true when putting, I missed what would have been some very "routine" putts over 10 feet in 2011.

The regular version is only $45 on Amazon, $37.50 for Wii.

Edit to add: Another thing that 12 can definitely offer that 11 can't is NO SCOTT VAN PELT.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

If anyone wants to try out Rift for the weekend, they're doing a "friends play free weekend" and I've got a few codes to hand out. Good from 10 am tomorrow til Monday morning. Probably want a fast internet connection though, since the client's something like 7-8 gigs to download.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Dragon Age II was kind of meh for me. This new moral ambiguity thing that is in all the games now is getting old. The companion selection is not that great. 3 Rogues? Do we really need 3 rogues and only one true tank and one true healer to choose from? The second tank is basically another DPS guy, and so's the other mage.

I don't think they thought things through very well. And the romance options are lame. One slutty pirate or a blood mage to choose from? Really?

Meh. Glad Witcher 2 comes out soon.

I don't know what you're complaining about; it doesn't get better than a slutty pirate. :D
