Official "My Team Got Screwed!" thread of the 2024 Men's Ice Hockey D-I Tournament

If there was no such rule about host teams needing to stay in that regional, what would the regionals look like?

Are we also allowing intra conference games?

Providence would be unchanged. 1v16, 8v9

Springfield:
Boston University vs RIT
Minnesota vs Michigan (or Omaha)

Sioux Falls:
Denver vs UMass
North Dakota vs Omaha (or Michigan)

Maryland Heights:
Michigan State vs Western Michigan
Maine vs Cornell

What exactly is involved in "hosting" a regional, and why does that team (who squeaked into the tournament and are going to be unceremoniously dismissed after their first game anyway) claim a spot in the nearby regional when another team from the same small New England state who had a much better season has to travel two-thirds of the way across the country?

They weren't unceremoniously dismissed. They played one hell of a game.

The thing I wonder, and I don't think it's ever happened, what would have happened if UMass and AIC both made the tournament with AIC winning the AHA. They would have both been 4 band teams. How do they determine who gets to stay at their host regional?

The only way this will ever be solved is if hockey becomes a money sport like men's basketball or if the 4 top seeds host regionals at campus sites. Men's basketball teams that host 1st/2nd round games are actually prohibited from playing in their host venues. But as long as the men's b-ball tournament brings in hundreds of millions and the hockey regionals struggle for attendance, they won't change that.

AIC wasn’t an official host

AIC is an official host. The Yellow Jackets were not eligible to be placed in this region because this is their home arena.

that won't ever happen. If we go back to campus sites it will be the top 8 hosting the first round as either best 2 out of 3 or as a 1 off, with the quarterfinals being played in what is now the by week.
