Official 2013 Minnesota State University, Mankato Offseason Thread

Re: Official 2013 Minnesota State University, Mankato Offseason Thread

Mike Hastings gets his first star recruit at Minnesota State in Zach Stepan. This is a REALLY good thing for us. 3rd round draft pick, and the third leading scorer in the USHL.

Re: Official 2013 Minnesota State University, Mankato Offseason Thread

Stepan is a huge get...excellent for your program and for our nWCHA....it looks like you guys are going to be the top dogs to chase after... unfortunately, don't expect much of a run from Lake State....maybe someday we too can begin to once again land such quality recruits as Stepan.

I'm very happy to hear this, and he's a fairly high draft pick, so the skill is there, but how much of his video game-like numbers at Waterloo are because of his skill, and how much is that he played with Cammarata and Kloos? Any USHL fans have an opinion?

Re: Official 2013 Minnesota State University, Mankato Offseason Thread

Cammarata and Kloos where what I call "fringe" players. Neither really liked playing in the "inside". Waterloos big sheet help this line allot and supported their style of play. I think the two will struggle to have the same kind of success at the college level and question if they can even play "inside".

Stephan no doubt picked up some extra points being on the same line as Kloos/Cammerata and his numbers where a bit inflated because of this, but he is a different player. He was very responsible in his own end and is willing to play on the inside. I think his game will transition well into college.

The other thing you need to consider when looking at this lines numbers is how many points they put up on the power play vs 5 x 5. In 5 x 5 situations, they were very average

Of the 3 players on that line, Stephan will have the greatest success at the college level.

One other thing to remember is that he was a linrmate with teddy last year at shattuck. If they can feed off each other like they did there, scoring will be abundant.

The Purple punch is flowing strong this morning isn't it?
Stepan will be a good get for MSU for sure, but he won't be a better college player than Cammy or Kloos. NHL potential? Well yes he probably has more of that cosidering how short Cammy and Kloos are.
But as far as college goes, you haven't been paying attention if you think short fast guys don't tear it up in college.
Cammy and Kloos will dominate with speed and skill at the college level. Cammy lead a riddiculously talented Shattuck team and all of the USHL in scoring...he will be a stud for the U.

p.s. Let's not forget MSU had no chance at Stepan without Rolik being a clown. That's ok though, the Gophers will get revenge by destroying OSU in the Big 10 next year.

Not going to take anything away from Stepan, because he's an incredible player, but you are grossly underplaying the abilities of Cammarata and Kloos. Both of those guys have excelled at every level they have played at. If you look at what Cammarata was able to do at Shattuck, and what he did in the USHL as a 16 and 17 year old, you'd realize how special of a player he is.

Purple is not my drink, but its clear maroon is yours

No where did I discuss Kloos and Cammarta "size". Its how the play the game is what I'm basing my comments on. Stephan was better defensively, more responsible in his play, something Kloos/Cammy will need to do at the college level or their playing time will be limited (see Issacson). This will also affect their point production in both cases.

Everybody's is fast at the college level, so they will no longer have this advantage they had in the USHL. The goal tending this year in Juniors was rather suspect and will be very different at the college level. No more points from the "fringe" areas. And there will be less time/space on the rink for Kloos/Cammey to do what they did in the USHL.

I do not see them dominating at the college level, but they should have a productive college career. I'll jump on the band wagon when I see them play on the inside like Rau or Guertler

Very good prospect for the Mavs. I assume he will be skating this year? How many forwards do we have this year? I will have to look to see if the roster is current on the school site.

13 returning forwards, with three coming in, assuming there's no more additions/defections. Of that 16, there's probably 13 or 14 in the mix for regular playing time, which is a pretty good number.

Re: Official 2013 Minnesota State University, Mankato Offseason Thread

I was hoping you would chime in so I didn't have to look! thanks Chris, that is a good number.

Let's just be honest about this. No one really knows who is going to translate best to the college game. They are all going to be in different systems so until they are in them, no one knows. For the time being, I'm behind this recruit since from all accounts it's a big win for MSU.

Bale, I agree with this being a nice "get" and of course we can't know how these guys' careers are going to turn out (But that's part of what makes it fun, right?). I was just curious if any Waterloo or USHL fan knew if Stepan had created a lot of his big number of points, or if he was the beneficiary of a lot of perfect setups, and got a lot of his points on secondary assists.

But either way, I'm even more excited for next season to start after this news, and hopefully it's a sign that we'll at least be in the running for other top rated recruits.

Fair enough, I was directing that at the ****ing match that inevitably ensued when someone dare have the opinion that this kid could be as good or better than a Gopher recruit.:)

Let's not take each other's comments out of context. I never said one of these players would be better than the other. It was the person I was responding to that said Stepan will be the successful prospect at this level and Kloos and Cammarata will not. All I did was dispute the opinion that Kloos and Cammarata likely won't have success in the NCAA.

So, either you agree with that poster that Kloos and Cammarata are less positioned to succeed than Stepan (in which case I will have to strongly disagree with you as all three are positioned to succeed).

Or you either misread or are misrepresenting what I said because I never said one will be better than the others.

Who said he can't be AS GOOD as the Gopher recruits????

The response was to a post that he will be better. That, I disagree with.

You can be such a level headed guy, but a little too sensitive at times. It was a huge pickup for the Mavs and Stepan is going to be awesome. Just be happy :)

My original response was actually to RinkPig, who by the way declared that it's not possible for this kid to be as good as his former linemates, even though I quoted you. So that's who said he can't be as good.

As for the ****ing match comment, that had to do with people feeling the need to jump into this thread and claim that someone that thinks he might be better than the Gopher recruits must be drinking purple punch. Never mind the fact that that comment was obviously from someone that watched all three kids playing. Then following that up with talking about how the Gophers will get revenge against OSU for not allowing him to go to the U. Sounds to me like a bit of a ****ing match with a little insecurity about one's own team's players mixed in.

My comments are usually based in facts and reflecting on history, not emotion or being sensitive. Knowing that Gopher fans will inevitably take over a thread that has very little to do with them and likely devalue virtually anything that any other in-state school does whether it's Duluth, St Cloud, Bemidji or Mankato.

I am happy about this kid coming to Kato regardless of the conditions surrounding him. There are always restrictions around where a kid goes to school, whether people are willing to admit it or not. People are just upset that OSU placed a condition on 5 schools (one of which was JDUBBS and RinkPig's favorite team). There are restrictions on every decision, this is just one that some people are upset about.

Just let tArrogance go, and this thread would have less stupid posts. :)

I always appreciate your posts, and appreciate your honesty and level-headidmess. Thank you for the clarification on your post. I just assumed you were referring to me because my post was quoted.

For the record, I think Stepan is going to be an excellent college player. And restrictions or not, there is good reason why he is going to Mankato. Hastings is an excellent coach and your program is setup to make some noise the next few years.

Congrats again on landing an excellent player. I am genuinely excited for your program.
