Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

Re: Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

I felt like a lot of what we saw in the first period was bus legs. However, your special teams made the difference. That feed to Gervais was absolutely beautiful. We've been seeing that a lot (including from the Mavs) from a guy standing in front of the penalty box door, but that's the first team I've seen someone pull that off effectively through the center of the ice.

Home ice is in the bag. Solid sweep.

Ferris State could lose twice more in six games, but as we sit at 18 in the Pairwise, that's probably not something we want. I wonder now what happens if we win out, and lose to FSU in the WCHA title game.

If Minnesota State and Ferris State go deep into the WCHA playoffs, I think they both will get invited. That is also taking into account that the Mavs finish the regular season strong (probably 6 points). If anyone other than MSU or FSU win the Broadmoor, the chances of MSU making the NCAA's is extremely slim. The non-conference record killed us, especially the North Star Cup.

Barring a complete collapse, Ferris State will be representing the WCHA.

This only takes into account the rest of the regular season, but the bottom line is that if MSU wins all of their last four games, they're likely in good position to be in the tournament field, and anything less than that, and they'll likely need to win the WCHA tournament.

I like this. Hopefully we can win four in a row here. Should be able to do it, but still have to play the games.

Purple Mavs, here is a video retrospective of the history of Omaha Lancers hockey:

http://www.ushl.com/news.php?action=detail&news_id=2323

I mostly am posting it here for you guys because there is on-camera commentary in the video by incoming Mankato recruit Luca Frigo (at the 4:12 mark of the video), notwithstanding the fact that your head coach became the Vince Lombardi of the USHL while at the helm of the Lancers for 14 seasons and compiling a career record there of 529-210-56. Thought it might at least peripherally interests you guys (or girls). A large part of who and what the Lancers are was built on the back of Coach Hastings. Next time you are here to play us if he is still at the helm, he'll be warmly received, to say the least.

By the way, I went to the Lancers/Des Moines Buccaneers game yesterday afternoon here in Omaha at Ralston Arena and Frigo had a (alas) crummy game. He took a couple silly penalties and was one of the participants in the shootout ending to the game that the Lancers lost and he was one of the Lancers "missers" in that shootout.

In the same town with UNO, the Lancers have drawn an average of 3,271 per date at Ralston Arena this season, their new digs (2nd year) you'll see in the video. It seats 4,020 for hockey. Before the advent of UNO, they played at the old Aksarben Coliseum (capacity 6,200) which they sold out for 241 straight games in the '90's at one point. UNO basketball shares Ralston Arena with the Lancers as well (until it, too, moves into the new arena being built on campus).

You guys are/would be one of my 4 choices to open our new building. Unfortunately, it isn't to be as Air Force is getting that honor.

Thanks for posting. Your thoughts on Frigo? I've only seen him play a few times over the last couple years when they've come up to Sioux City. To his credit, he looks markedly better this year than last year. Still, I don't know on this one.

On a team with a lot of firepower, he hasn't been exactly a prolific scorer.

What's interesting is that Coach Hastings wanted him instead of being interested in Gage Hough (who is the same age as Frigo), who is STILL uncommitted as I write this, and Hough is the USHL's 5th leading scorer, and, is plus 30 on the season, besides. If I had to chose, I know which I'd want. Hough and Frigo are almost identical in size, too. There are UNO fans that have wondered why Coach Blais isn't/hasn't offered Hough (along with the 4 other Lancers currently committed to UNO).

The Lancers have sort of become a de facto Lancers farm team in recent seasons. Coach Blais has taken way more advantage of this than Mike Kemp ever did.

That said, Frigo has been a lot better this season than last. On what is arguably one of the better Lancer teams in their storied history, one wonders how much this player or that player benefits from the players that are around him, like maybe Frigo, perhaps. He appears to be a good skater from what I have seen of him. I don't go to a lot of Lancers games, being a UNO season ticket holder, so I haven't seen a lot of him, either

Did the Mavs do a trading card set again this year?

Re: Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

I don't think so. I've been to every game, and I didn't get one.

Yes, a couple weeks ago. Only gave out 500, if I recall. Tunahead, my daughter may have picked one up as well. If I have an extra, I'll send it your way.

If you have one I would be super appreciative (again!), just let me know if you need my address again or if you'd like me to send a PayPal payment your way!

It would be nice if they took better care of season ticket holders.

Agreed. There was very little fanfare about it (not even that much for autograph night, which if I recall was the next night), and the small number of sets available was surprising. It's not like we're only drawing 1000 or so. 500 doesn't go very far with 3500 or more showing up every night.

It is pretty surprising that season ticket holders don't automatically get one of these... kind of sad really

Big win tonight. With Ferris State losing, the Mavs are 2 points out of the MacNaughton cup race with 3 to play. Should be a fun finish!

So I guess we need Ferris State to lose another and tie a game, and the Mavs need to win all 3 of their games. Ah well... I'm ok with the Mavs getting 2nd :p

I assume we have the tiebreakers, with the head-to-head (and, if we were to catch them, it would almost certainly mean we have more conference wins), but we need to push for 3 wins to move up in the Pairwise.

That said, I just want to win tonight!

Re: Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

So with two wins, the Mavericks are guaranteed a share of the MacNaughton Cup. Crazy weekend with UAF sweeping Ferris. The Mavericks desperately need these two wins for pairwise reasons as well.

Also, with this weekend's wins, the Mavericks have back to back 20 win seasons for the first time ever. Progress is being made, thankfully!

Re: Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

If I understand the tiebreaker rules correctly, two wins next weekend would also guarantee the #1 seed for the WCHA tournament. If the tied teams haven't played four games against each other, the next tiebreaker is conference wins, so the Mavs would have that.
