Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

Re: Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

Mental disicipline I understand..but you're not going to let an opposing team come into your barn and beat the **** out of your teammates. In hockey, you stand up for anyone of your his whether you're the all star guy or te muck and grind tough guy. It sucks losing two guys for Friday, but I have no problem with Teddy and Zach stepping up and answering the call.

I'm still wondering how this discipline is going to shake out. I know there were some people internally that were pretty upset with them getting DQs and Motte not. I have a feeling you're either going to see Stepan or Blueger get reduced or Motte get increased. That's just a guess, but it would only seem to make sense.

As for what they did, I don't disagree that when it got to that point, they probably needed to defend each other. Teddy should have skated away in the first place and not placated them. If he skates away it's all over and done with. Leitner did that just a couple minutes earlier. Overall, I think the refs should be embarrassed it got to that point. They were letting chippy garbage go all weekend. If they get control of the game on Friday and subsequently on Saturday, that doesn't happen. It drives me nuts to see refs let the little garbage go all weekend and everyone in the building but them can see what's coming.

Exactly right. And I would hope Saturday's game would result in discipline for the refs as well, but I'm not holding my breath. Teddy and Stepan were hit after the whistle all weekend. A few minutes before the melee, Stepan got cross checked and slashed after he was already down in the middle of the ice, and there was no call, so I understand the players' frustrations.
I'm just concerned that this has happened before (NMU and Huntsville) and we're now in a vicious cycle where opponents will keep going after us because they know they can keep getting reactions, which will only embolden them to keep going after us. We lead the NCAA in PIM/game, and even if you take out Saturday's game, we're still in the top 3. We need the physical play and to stand up for our teammates, but it just seems like we're too frequently crossing that fine line.

The officials definitely lost control of that one. What I don't understand is that after the first altercation, Teddy tries skating away, and Motte gives him a blocker and engages in a second altercation; yet he doesn't get a DQ?

It's interesting that after last year, and how disciplined this team seemed to be, that they now are the PIM leaders in the nation. That's gotta get cut down for the stretch run or that run is going to be very short lived.

The Motte decision is the confusing part to me. If the other 3 guys were going to get DQs, his actions certainly warranted it.

As for the PIM minutes, I'm concerned about the types of penalties they get. Early in the year it was almost a guarantee that we would get a Too Many Men on the Ice penalty. Since then it's just been sloppy, undisciplined garbage. I still think it's a lack of leadership on the team from players. I love McInnis, but I don't see him taking control of the team while on the ice. I also love Chase Grant, but he's a player that historically doesn't keep his temper very well. The big thing last year is that you had Hayes and Elbrecht that you could tell had control over everything on the ice. If someone stepped out of line, they were going to put an end to it. I don't see that this year and it puts us in some ugly positions.

We've missed Elbrecht a lot more than I thought we would. Early in the year, we missed the solid, stay at home and clear the crease defense. But lately, I think we've gotten much better at that, Stern in particular. But the leadership thing has been even harder to replace.

I wasn't really all that clear from the Puck Daddy piece about what actually instigated things. I'm interested in knowing more.

It was building and building all weekend. FSU was clearly frustrated and MSU was probably chirping a little bit. Lots of after the whistle pushing, shoving and hacking all weekend. Refs never put a stop to it and it finally escalated into that.

The guy sitting next to me on Saturday, whom I never met before, was a former high-school hockey ref. Just after the Mavs scored the 4th goal, he turned to me and said "there's going to be a brawl. Ferris has been cheap-shotting all night, and that goal just pushed them over the edge. I can smell it coming."

This. Times a million. Couldn't have said this better myself.

Glad to see you guys are coming around to my way of thinking. I've been saying that since the beginning of the season.:)

Sorry, I had to get an "I told you so" in there since I'm wrong about pretty much everything else.

UMD just tied #1. If they and SCSU keep rolling, you'll be fine as long as you win the games against teams below you.

That's what makes it so frustrating. We played so badly for 5 of the 6 periods this weekend. We took UMD 20 seconds from a shootout and were beating SCSU until Williams melted down. The reason so many people outside of Kato think that this program isn't going anywhere is because when we get on this stage, we play like garbage. They played 10x better last weekend against Ferris right after going to Alaska and dropping 3 out of 4 and now this letdown. I truly believe we need to win the conference tourney or we miss the NCAAs.

At this point that is reality.

My apologies to the band: In the North Star Cup thread last week, I said our band was terrible. Maybe I sit too close to them in Mankato, and that distorts the sound, but I thought they sounded pretty good in the Xcel, and I thought their presence added to the atmosphere. Good job, guys!

Agree....they did sound pretty good. The band version of Ole was pretty awesome.

That was actually pretty cool.

I've kind of thought since Novemeber this team would have to win a Final Five to go to the big dance, and I believe that's almost a must now.
