Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

Re: Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

I agree, but they're likely gonna have to win the Broadmoor to get into the tournament anyways, so let's see how things shake out in league play for a few more weeks before we start really panicking.

Fair enough! This weekend should be a good test of where we are. BGSU looks like a top half of the conference team, so it's our chance to get some mojo back. I'll wait until at least January to panic.

I don't see just one WCHA team in the tournament. I would also be very surprised with three. There is too much hockey left to push the panic button.

Matt Leitner is back and practicing full; let's hope he can keep his head on straight and be more accountable of his actions to help be the best player on this team.

Huge series tonight. It would be nice to see the Mavs have a dominant performance this weekend and get this thing headed in the direction we were hoping.

This team lacks leadership so badly. Tonight may have given Huggins the starting job for now.

Re: Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

frustrating. How many games are they going to come out on fire only to come up with 0 points?

It doesn't help that they keep going flat in the second period. Also, has Williams lost his mojo?

Re: Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

I think both teams looked pretty uninterested tonight. However after the game got tied at 1-1 It looked like Mankato didn't really know how to handle the BG's forechecking and high pressure and it forced a lot of errors but it was hard to establish a flow it seemed with all the penalties and stoppages. I enjoyed the outcome so I'm not going to complain too much as this was a big win for BG's program in the WCHA (you should take that as a compliment to your teams success) and I'm hoping for a tighter more flowing game tomorrow. BG needs some new rivalries with only playing 2 against OSU and J Crew U er Miami being gone and it would be fun to have a Mankato/BG rivalry at the top of the conference I think.

Something's not right. Whether it's lingering hip issues, a poor summer of training, or lacksidasical effort now that he's drafted and already put up huge number, I'm not sure. But there's something not right.

The Mavericks dominated early, Williams gave up a sort of soft goal, and then the penalties were awful. It turned into non contact hockey for awhile.

Bowling Green just simply out worked the Mavs the last two periods.

LaFontaine's game has gone downhill, and I'm not sure why. He's not the same player. In addition, Leitner is lazy. He's the most skilled on the ice and he's not effective enough when he's out worked. It's frustrating to watch.

Someone really needs to step up and be a leader. Big time.

Oh, and Palmquist was -3 for the second consecutive Friday. With Nelson out, he should be the top defenseman. Brutal.

And Captain McInnis has a huge goal two Saturdays in a row to avoid complete disaster. Next weekend is gonna be a tough test if they don't pull their **** together.

Huggins with the shutout was certainly nice. Coach has a problem now. Do you keep playing Huggins, who has been solid every time, or run Williams back out there to see if this has just been a freak streak?

I'm betting Huggins Friday. Since it's non-conference, might as well give Williams another shot on Saturday, unless Huggins is unbelievable on Friday.

I believe it's now Huggins' job to lose. Clearly something's not right with Williams and you have to ride your hot hand, just like he did with Williams last year. They need a split next weekend to try and help out their resume.

Re: Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

So, what say you Maverick fans? This season is not starting the way we all had hoped and expected. The defense is lacking. The offense has been ridiculously underwhelming. Williams has not been what we thought. The only real bright spot has been Huggins. What's the main problem? Can it be fixed? How will it be fixed? I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's happening and why it's happening.

The defensive lapses have been frustrating, but those happen with every team. When you're last in the NCAA in scoring, it's hard to fault the defense. We were shut out once all of last year, in the last game. It's already happened twice this year, with 4 other 1 goal games. Coach Hastings talked about how we were settling for perimeter shooting; helps the shot numbers, but not all that likely to score. I would think that's going to be the focus this week - Get to the net!

Re: Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

The injury bug has really gotten a hold of this team. Something that good teams battle through, which I'm still optimistic that we will be able to do. As some of these players begin to make it back, I'm confident that the wins will start coming. The Mavs have dug a hole for themselves, but the good thing is we still have time to crawl out of it. It needs to start with a better performance against Bowling Green this weekend.

To build on your comments, the hole really isn't that big right now. We're 2-2 in the conference. Admittedly, OOC has been awful and we haven't done ourselves any favors, but the good thing is that we still have a lot of time to make up ground from a mathematical standpoint.

Re: Official 2013-2014 Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks Season Thread

I'm just glad we have virtually our whole conference schedule left. We're gonna need the Broodmoar to get to the NCAAs.
