At the risk of sounding ignorant, does anyone know if there are much different styles of play between the lower leagues such as BCHL as opposed to USHL? I notice for example, that Brodie Reid is a team leader in the USHL with 36 points, while Mitch MacMillan from the BCHL has over a 100 points. BCHL seems to play a few more regular season games than the USHL, but why the massive discrepancy? It also doesn't seem to effect their production in college, as despite the variety of points, USHL and BCHL grads seem to get similar points.

I agree completely. Meh, let's hope he has a fantastic pro career. Comparatively, I don't think we are going to end up losing that much compared to other HE teams. If the mack loses Da Costa, they take a huge step back. Wellman leaves umass, i bet marcou follows. half of the riverhawks are gone. vermont loses all their good forwards save seabass stalberg. unh loses a ton but they will reload. I bet warsofsky and shattenkirk leave.


It will certainly be an interesting offseason.

Shattenkirk and Bonino likely leave. Cohen is a possibility to join them. I'd be shocked if any other BU player leaves early, Warsofsky is to small to be a cant miss prospect that the NHL will be knocking down his door and has not expressed an interest in leaving, and no one else has shown enough this year to warrant a contract.

The USHL is the premier amateur hockey league in North America, and the BCHL is second. The main difference is in the style of play; The BCHL is all offense with very little coaching or playing defense. The goal tenders in Canada are on their own. Much more time is spent coaching defense in the USHL Jake Newton only made second team in his last year in the USHL , a first team D man was John Moore and he was a first round draft pick on last year’s NHL draft. Moore had signed with Colorado College but went with the $$.
Mitch MacMillan is a great finisher, but there is a reason why he was 20 before he signed with a division one school and why he was not drafted by the NHL. He is just an average skater. Mark Mitch’s younger brother is a player without a visible weakness and has great future. I am looking forward to the next four years and Mitch should make NU’s power play much better, but another Chris Kreider he in not!

The USHL is the premier amateur hockey league in North America, and the BCHL is second.

This just isn't close to being true.

The Q. The OHL. The WHL. All of these are better than both the BCHL and USHL and produce much more in the way of hockey talent...and it's not close.

The CHL only produces 53% of the NHL. That's not even that much talent

Well, yeah they get a weekly stipend for gas and food(normally 150-200 dollars). They are still considered junior leagues.

A $200 dollar stipend to cover expenses isn't exactly what I would call "$$$". They receive less per year than the scholarship offered to a college hockey player. The NCAA can call them whatever they want, but I have a hard time calling a 16 year old getting his food and gas expenses covered a 'professional'...Especially given the fact that the USHL has a similar system.

(There's a misconception that the NCAA calls them professional, but that's not really true. Rather, there's a specific rule that governs loss of eligibility for playing for a CHL team, which neatly sidesteps the question of whether the CHL is really professional or really amateur.)

Good to know, thanks for the info.

It's also worth noting that the Canadians themselves consider players who play on teams in the CHL leagues (OHL, Q and WHL) amateurs. They retain their eligibility to play for Canadian universities (a fate worse than death).

For those wondering, Chris Rawlings has offers to go pro but he will be staying at Northeastern at least another year. The way he said it, I'd guess he's probably planning on leaving at the end of next season though.

You're right about Mitch's skating. He sometimes appears to shuffle his feet rather than picking them up and striding. However, he does this very well and it probably makes him harder to knock down or off the puck. He's better known for his hard accurate shot and for his willingness to take punishment in front of the net in order to score what his coach called "dirty goals". Brother Mark's principal liablity, at present is the fact that he barely weighs 150 lbs.. That's OK if a guy is 5'7" and lightning quick. Mark is 6' tall and there is some concern about the beating he'd take in D1. Another year of experience and work in the weight room would make him a real prized recruit.
I'd expect him to be drafted in June.

The Kreider selection seems like a joke! The 1st round tag attached to him must have had a lot of influence.

If this were a post on Facebook, I would "like" it.

Kreider has been unreal since coming back from World Jrs. I do believe he leads the league in freshman goal scoring, but beyond that, if you actually watch him play, he is a major impact player.

I'm glad he got off to a bit of a slow start - better chance he stays for two.

Great decision if he sticks by it. I think he will mature a ton nxt yr & improve his overall skills. I can see him helping us tremendously & his game. His stock will rise (my opinion).

Far as lving for the pro ranks.. can't blame him or anyone else at any year.. (if they have a shot). Jordan Schroeder just left after 2 yrs of play & he would've had a contract had he stayed, but decided otherwise. And Minny is a solid school. If you're not in their shoes.. tough passing judgement one way or another.

I am glad Rawlings will be in a Husky uniform nxt season
