Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

That said, next March we cannot be having this discussion. It's home ice (and NCAAs) or bust.

I'll drink to that.

This speaks directly to the immense difficulty of establishing a tradition of excellence in a program. It will always be an uphill battle to get top notch talent at Northeastern. As NU fans, we will always have that inferiority-driven edge that comes with watching too many Beanpot choke jobs and coming out on the wrong side of the Hockey East wringer at the end of the season (At least I will :D ). We will always lose recruits to schools that say "Boston" on their sweater. Cronin could promise a West Village penthouse and free Qdoba for five years and it still wouldn't be enough.

I was going to write something else, but now I'm distracted by the thought of free Qdoba.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

Per Huskies post regarding someone not coming back, very much agreed. It's pretty obvious they expect probably two underclassmen not to be here next year. Maybe one more.

BTW, Dan Nycholat signed with Dartmouth for next season.

As for my comments on measuring up to BU. If you've followed this team for decades, you'd understand my point to a greater degree. I hope you never do though as that would mean going forward we'd be in a battle for some HE championships and everyone would wonder why we'd need to measure up to anyone. But the reality is that BU is two miles away and has been kicking Husky butt for what, 40-50 years?? BC is probably one national championship away from being on an even higher level. One win over BU every few years doesn't cut it.

Think the Raleigh-Durham triangle in North Carolina. BU is Duke, BC is North Carolina and we're N.C. State. But even they used to be just as good as the first two. I think Cronin and the coaching staff have done a great of starting to get us to that point.

Once you guys graduate and get to other parts of the city, you'll prefer Anna's Taqueria every time!!:p

I thought he was going to wait one more season and then go pro with Alex Greer.

Didn't you hear? Alex Greer already is a pro. In fact, he scored the gold medal winning goal last week in Vancouver, duh.

El Pelon was far better. I even prefer Boca Grande over Anna's most of the time.

The sad part is, I graduated last year and still go to Qdoba sometimes over Anna's, which is literally down the street from my house. Somebody please throw something at me.

Cronin=Jimmy Valvano and 2011=1983?:D

I'd be cool with that.

RIP El Pelon. Hoping it comes back soon.

I lived in the West Fens until recently...that neighborhood hasn't been the same since the restaurants burned down.

Keeping with the Tobacco Road theme, I'd say a better comparison would be Harvard is NC State, and NU is Wake Forest. Wake has only ever been to one Final Four, has had some good teams and every so often has a good year or two. And similar to NC State, Harvard has won a national championship and used to have good hockey teams, but has fallen off the map considerably. But I understand the comparison you're trying to make, regardless.

I just think the fact that no one is using NC A&T as the equivalent for Northeastern shows the progress that the program has made.

Good points! I was a teen-ager but I recall when N.C. State was very good. Always serious competition for the other two. Harvard was good about that time as well; Donato, Sweeney, MacDonald, Bourbeau....serious talent.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

I am a Husky hockey fan, sure.. but i'll take improvements in the school overall (which have happened solidly over the yrs), to a slow yet steady build up in the sports programs.

Of course we'd like both, but NU has done (and continues to do), a fine job with the academic experience kids get. The University overall stays focused on its #1 mission - Education. Sports (hockey etc) is on the radar... just not priority number one. Not saying its right or wrong.. yet really, nothing wrong with that :)

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

So I didn't realize Maine's Darling was out for both UMASS games. Now it makes sense. Sure, we should have gotten more than one point in our last two weekends.. but...

Because of a goalie's drinking problem, UMASS is in and NU is out. That and some terrible third periods on our part.

...How many days till next season?

I didn't know Darling was out for that series either. Kinda makes the end to our season sting a little more

I suspect a league-wide conspiracy to keep NU out of 8th place.....

Of course it is.... they feel like they shat on UMass too much in the early part of the decade, PC is just horrible, and MC is always getting pooped on. They don't want to hurt the feelings of the new team (UVM) and they don't want to screw with the big four (except Maine the last two years, but maybe that's payback for their 42-1-2 season in the early 90's) so that leaves NU and UML to poop on. And UML tried their hardest to get pooped on towards the end of the season....

Nah, I'm jk. I just wanted to say shat and poop a lot.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

Ok..I have confirmed sources that say a push to get our young standout goalie here next year will be made this spring and summer, perhaps a season earlier then expected. My prior post is now confirmed that it is likely that a good view rafter seat will be cleared up so that Mike Binnington can get a nose bleed in order that Clay Witt (now a USHL all star at 18/19) can sit on the pine with a bic lighter and a gallon butane under Rawlings ***. Can't say I agree with this tactic if true but that may at least give us 2 good and 1 fair Mountain Man between the pipes. Does this make sense..can't say. I don't see Rawlings as a big time goalie, he is very good, but let's face it we need a Thiessen type in there every year, in order to compete in HE. Of course, Witt does not have to accept these terms I assume.

But Riddle me this, if Rawlings was not 6 foot 4 would we even be talking about him?

There is even some talk of Rawlings perhaps considering taking a pro contract, I say pro not NHL..but I can not confirm. It seems Mr Rawlings may not take to or like the books too much..I mean really who the F does? or is he worried about competition on the bench and the potential split playing time and earning a job, Who knows? I really hope he stays as I think a year or so would benefit him and perhaps us too..but best of luck to him if he does decide to leave us. I mean there are it seems a lot of old goalies in the NHL and if an opportunity comes up who is to say that HE builds a better goalie then the IHL.

Also in from J.J. Foley's it seems there was an ugly(ish) meeting earlier this week over at 360 Huntington between Peter Roby and Cronin, does that have anything to do with grabbing a slightly green apple goalie a year before he would have been a more robust Red..perhaps..more to follow.

Witt was coming here in 2010-2011 as early as last May. I dont think there was even a conversation about him not coming in next season. He will be 19 when the season starts, so its not like he is young, maybe not 21 like some of the fowards will be, but certainlly seasoned.

Having two capable goalies is hardly a sin. Worked ok for UML and Merrimack this year. Worked great for Maine in the past. Pretty sure thats how they do things out West.

Might have been nice to have a guy to throw in the net the last game of the year after Rawlings fell flat the night before.

So, yes, it does make sense.

And just in case Rawlings decides to leave this year or next, (which he would be nuts to do unless $$$ is an issue) you have a more then capable backup in Witt. having Mountain as your number 1? Yeah, no.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

That's good news on Witt if he can make it to Matthews nxt season. I really do not think Rawlings is a bad goalie.. in the Beanpot this yr i saw him play his most complete game.. & you know something, he looked better than Thiessen did.. in the 'Pot last yr.

I know the level of shots he faced was not as robust as last yr's Pot, but the dropoff wasn't that huge either (factoring in our defense as well between both seasons)..

I think he has that spark that can get him to the next level. I still think he should stay put.. compete.. & get better prepared before leaving. The grass always looks greener on the other side (unless its really big $$$$), then nevermind. :)

You guys and gals see this: Coach Parker in Handshake Line

After you pick yourself off the ground because the Boston Globe actually wrote about hockey west of Amherst, go to the end and read the "Dogs Gone" section. Too funny.
