I don't get the sudden rush. maybe, because they were working on the giant arms deal with our very very good friends, the Saudis?
Good point. Where are all the GWB-was-evil-because-he-was-too-cozy-with-the-Saudi-royal-family types now?

Re: Obama XVII: Do You Take Your Tea Party with One Sugar or Two?

One pitfall of the right's creating a fantasy alt-reality is that they won't know -- literally, can't know -- when they're losing. I don't necessarily agree that shutting down the government would go as badly for the GOP this time as it did for Newt (I think the former was a classic popularity contest where Clinton whipped Gingrich -- in a retrial, the Dems would be less popular and the Republicans would be less obviously creepy), but it's true that on the planet Wingnut where Sarah Palin is considered credible, the laws of physics are suspended. American politics is played out in the real world, however.

Framing this as a sudden rush is just political posturing. Nothing Congress does is sudden.
Wrong. Look at how they bum-rushed a health care shoehorn way of getting it through when few if anyone had even read the whole thing.

You mean the process that dragged on for more than a year?

The ideas that have been discussed for decades? Right.

I guess everyone in Congress and elsewhere are just incredibly slow readers, as most if not all people admitted they hadn't read the bill, and provisions that few other than the writers realized were in there have been coming to light ever since. :p

Usually true. But not absolute. Ref. Patriot Act.

The real problem is that there are way too many of those wingnuts!

and when push came to shove and people found out what was there, they were against it, right?

If we did everything by popular opinion a lot of things would be different. We don't. The people we chose and elected voted for Obamacare. It's amazing how when the left passes something no matter what it is immediately it was done covertly and against the will of the people. How exactly? We elected people to reprsent us and they voted for it. This whole "will of the American people" petard the right keeps throwing out is complete and utter BS and it feeds the stupidity of the electorate. Maybe it's about time that higher than less than 50% of the people who vote ACTUALLY understood how the American system of government works.

And I don't even like the bill.

Umm...there may have been a long, drawn out process, but it was still sudden.

no, its just that bad ideas done over time become great ideas. Such like signing climate accords with China... sure they won't follow them... but do we feel better about ourselves?

Re: Obama XVII: Do You Take Your Tea Party with One Sugar or Two?

If we did everything by popular opinion a lot of things would be different.

If we did everything by popular opinion we'd have immense social and military programs and then throw a fit and refuse to pay for them with taxes.

Re: Obama XVII: Do You Take Your Tea Party with One Sugar or Two?

Meanwhile, is it time to ask the Chinese to do us a little favor? They pick up some cheap labor who will be happy to be paid in ban mian, Seoul gets a ready market, and we all get some sleep.

Re: Obama XVII: Do You Take Your Tea Party with One Sugar or Two?

So... does anybody want to sign the anti-missle shield components of the treaty with Russia in light of the Norks action today?

Re: Obama XVII: Do You Take Your Tea Party with One Sugar or Two?

Fine, how's this: nuclear weapons are expensive to maintain. We need to cut our federal budget. One thing we can cut from the budget without harming overall national seurity is a significant portion of our nuclear arsenal. If we can get the Russians to cut theirs too, all the better. That sufficient for you?

Or is this another instance of cut spending...but not the spending *I* want?

I can do better than that...reduce the number of nukes we maintain by using them...North Korea, solved; Afghanistan, solved; Iran+Iraq = Irate, solved;

Pretty simple. What could go wrong with that plan????

But, but, a missile shield is something Bush liked. Therefore it can't be useful or a good idea. At least until the Norks drop a nuke on San Francisco or something.

If they show signs of using techonology developed after the 18th century (and the ever-present "plans" for a nuclear reactor are not the same as actually having one, let alone a nuclear weapon), then maybe you'd have a point. Or if they develop an artillary shell that can cross the pacific.

As it stands, are we really that concerned about a country that can't even keep the lights on? Seriously, Kim Jong Il is the king of the loonies, but seeing as we aren't South Korea, Japan, or even China, meh. I'm more concerned with the nutball in Venezuela and the violence on our southern border than this dumb****.

I wouldn't call this 18th century technology:
