NWHL Announcement Event On Tuesday In Saint Paul

Re: NWHL Announcement Event On Tuesday In Saint Paul

Northeastern announced their schedule and the opener is an exhibition game against the Boston Pride.

Curious how all of this is affecting relationships: former teammates, players/college coaches, etc.

For example - NU's most famous women's hockey graduate is part of the group of players who are refusing to play professionally in North America this year. The point of which is to hopefully clear the way for the NHL to get involved with a new Women's League which they do not want to do as long as the NWHL is active. Yet her former coaches set up an exhibition against a team from the league that she and her group are trying to break up. This lends credibility to the Pride and could result in some new fans who then check out some games during their season, which is exactly what the 200 players do not want to happen.

On the other hand, there are three NU alumni announced as being on the Pride this year. This game gives them a chance to return to the site of their college years, see old friends and get a thank you from their school and fans for everything they did for the program.

Tough spot for college coaches.

Coaches have to pay the rent and other responsibilities, unlike most of the National Team members who for the most part have been living their lives on someone else’s dime.

While maybe it’s possible something has been going on with the NHL and women’s pro hockey and they’ve just been waiting for the World Futbol championships to get over to maximise their PR exposure, I wouldn’t hold your breath on it. Recent events should show the NHL that unless they have a way of increasing attendance at the women’s game by a factor of 10 or more and selling broadcast rights, they are best off staying out, it will eventually be a quagmire of lawsuits that will cost them millions and shed them in a bad light with some fans.

USA hockey & the NHL have to be a bit miffed that the national team members won’t be playing pro hockey in the US this coming year. The whole idea of paying them was so that they could play hockey, No?
And now with their renumeration (over 1/3 of which is paid by the NHL) they AREN’T going to play hockey because their bills are being paid by USA Hockey and the NHL. I don’t think USA Hockey saw that coming, maybe they should have included it in their agreement since the whole mess started when the players NWHL salary was cut in half. “If we’re going to pay you what the NWHL isn’t, you still have to play pro hockey”.

BU also announced that they will be playing an exhibition game against the Pride, without announcing their schedule. It appears that the Pride is being proactive in trying to get exposure now that the Blades are gone and the top 200 or so players are boycotting the NWHL.

Not the NHL and women's pro hockey, but the NY Rangers just announced that they are jumping into support of girls' youth hockey in a big way, and have hired Amanda Kessel to help with that effort.

Ha. Didn’t read the article but how do they call Kessel a FORMER USA star? Goals in both the Olympic and most recent WWC shootout!
A little premature to be sure, but honestly it would not surprise me if she doesn't make the final roster for the next Olympics. Be that as it may, it's good to see she is giving back to the game in the interim.

Yep, I agree with both statements. Thanks for sharing the article... off to read it now. :)

It's the NY Post, so the best place to out it is the compost.

The article states that in 2016, Kessel signed a $26,000 contract with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, which if true would be a surprise to her former Gopher teammates, and would also send some fans reaching for the paint thinner.

Maybe the statement "the NWHL's Minnesota Golden Gophers" would help with the reaching for the thinner? Probably not...;)

It all makes sense now. That "concussion" was just her way of saying, "Show me the money!"

With the release of the 19-20 schedule, the Riveters reveal their new home rink to be ProSkate Ice Arena in Monmouth Junction, NJ (South Brunswick in Middlesex County). I can't find any info on capacity.

The Devils have ended their partnership with the NWHL's Metropolitan Riveters. This comes after the Pegulas severed ties with the Buffalo Beauts. The Riveters will need a third different home rink if there is going to be a 19-20 NWHL season.

This seems like a concerted effort by the NHL to force the league to fold.
