Re: Nsa

Does anyone know who the new coach at NSA is? And does anyone have the scoop on why a terrific coach like Bill Ward was let go? Just looking for some answers!!
I wish it was because of the financial situation, unfortunately his departure had nothing to do with that.

He allowed things to go on that shouldn't have. All in all, he was put in a tough spot.sad for the girls though, such a terrific program.

Terrific program? The education is par at best. $45,000 a year, can basically get a year or 2 of college paid for at that price.

Re: Nsa

Totally agree! If I'm going to spend $45 grand for a prep school I'm sending my kid to Shattuck! Great hockey program, great coaching, great schedule, terrific exposure, and you are actually attending a school that has a VERY college like campus! NSA's home is a building that looks like a hotel from the 1850's. No campus and has a very non collegelike feel to it!! Can't believe they cost the same to attend!!

Plus, Faribault MN has ridiculously negative wind chills in February. It toughens them up. And no one pays extra! It's free!

Not sure if I am sending my D to Shattuck either. I remember a few years ago, they had an incident that made the school fire their 16U coach. Do not hold me to it, but I believe he was partying with the players and having inappropriate relationships. And prior to this incident, I also remember years back when some of Shattuck 19Ugirls were caught hanging out with the boys team in their shower. Again, swept under the rug.

There is not a perfect situation. However, I would rather keep my kid at home, tuck them in and kiss them good night. If I am searching for a prep school experience , I will send them to a prep school in our surrounding area.

How many of those kids do you think actually pay 45k? How much does it cost to play on a club team and travel all over the country for 70 games.

Re: Nsa

The incident you refer to at SSM involving the U-16 coach happened a number of years before at the previous high school he was coaching at. This incident did NOT involve any of the Shattuck players. When the news came out he was immediately relieved of his coaching duties and shortly thereafter he was fired. The incident was NOT "swept under the rug" as you stated! The school then brought in Dan Koch (current Associate Head Coach at the University of Wisconsin) to be the new U-16 coach and lead recruiter for the Girls Hockey program. He remained at the school for 3 seasons before returning to UW and during his time his team won a U-16 National Championship and he did an outstanding job of bringing in new top level recruits. (4 of those players are current members of the USA U-18 Womens Team.) The U-16's are now coached by Peter Johnson (brother of Mark) and they won another U-16 Championship this past April. The director of Girls Hockey and the U-19 coach is Gordon Stafford. He is highly respected in the women's hockey world and he consistantly sends about 90% of his graduates on to play D-1 hockey with the rest playing D-3. The enrollment of the school has grown annually over the last 5 years and Shattuck is always in the mix to win Nationals at the U-16 and U-19 levels year in and year out. The hockey program is essentially a Tier One (AAA) program at a prep school. It gives a student player the best of both worlds academically and athletically where as a traditional prep school out east doesn't even start playing hockey until late October - early November. I personally know a few families that sent their daughters to Shattuck over the last few years. Their kids were very good players when they left home to go there and now they are top level players that will be playing D-1 next year. Financial aid is also available and MANY of the families are helped. Because of the financial hardships at NSA, I don't believe they can offer much help to families financially. I just don't think you can compare the 2 schools! If I had a daughter that played hockey and she was good enough and really wanted to go to a prep school, Shattuck St. Mary's is where I'd send her. No question!

"swept under the rug" was about the shower incident. No one was fired. No one was suspended. Check your resources. Adios, till the next rug sweeping.

I would agree with this assessment - if you are willing to send your daughter away to prep school for hockey (and many are - particuarly if they live outside of MN, New England, Chicago, and MI), then Shattuck offers the best combined hockey development/academic opportunity. I'm sure the kids/parents at Nobles and Greenough who play for Assabet would disagree. But the Nobles route (or really any NE prep school) pretty much requires that the girls play club hockey in the Fall outside of school and this is not something the school supports so it is an incremental expense/time commitment that is not recognized by the prep school. The risk at Shattuck is that you get injured and can't play anymore and are left at that point at a middling academic prep school for non-athletes. For most NE (and Mid-Atlantic) players, parents and kids prefer they stay local in NE since the prep school/club route is as successful in college placement as Shattuck, they ca nsee their kids frequently if they choose, and many of the prep schools have outstanding college placement records for non-athletes as well as athletes.

Re: Nsa

Since you brought the so called incident up why don't you come forward with some kind of evidence or facts. What recources are you checking? Or did you just hear it from somewhere?

Re: Nsa

There is no perfect situation. I am sure that nothing goes on in the local public schools, or the NE boarding schools either. Shattuck must be alone in having something happen at their school.... years ago. I wonder what goes on at NSA or NAHA or Choate or if they just have a perfect history with faculty and students alike. No drugs, no relations, no drinking, no cheating.
Sending your D off is never easy, college or boarding. You have to ask is it the right thing for the kid, it isn't about you. Shattuck continues to win championships, and matriculate kids to the top schools in the nation so they must be doing something correct. They have 1/3 of their players from the east coast so a number of parents feel comfortable enough to send their D to a school 1000+ miles away- South Carolina, Vermont (home of NAHA), NJ, PA..... The U16 team has 3 kids from NY alone. If your D was good enough to play there and they wanted her I am sure you would give the school a long hard look. You would more than likely come to the same conclusion that 40 other parents have and not regret a minute of it.
And as for Bill Ward, Bill is a great guy who had his hands tied and was told to fill beds at higher tuitions than are being charged all over the country for a product (facility) that is questionable at best. Unfortunately for the school and alumni I fear their girls hockey program will be shuttered within two years. Bill has seen the writing on the wall for the last two seasons and there was nothing he could do about it.
