Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down...

Re: Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down...

I'm not thrilled that Sniffles is pledging my tax dollars to helping restore a church in another country. Maybe help rebuild Puerto Rico or get Flint some water.

Not a single dime of American taxpayer money should be going towards it, but here we are.

France is wealthy, the Vatican is wealthy - they can handle it just fine.

Re: Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down...

It's a privilege to be part of the rebuild, not a burden. FFS for once we're spending money on something that isn't designed to maim children. Physically. I'm fine with my $10 or whatever going to it -- it's much less than what I'll donate privately.

Being a tiny part of the history of that cathedral? F-ck yes, I'm in!

Re: Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down...

No. We can always make more Puerto Ricans and Michiganers. There is only one Notre Dame.

There are even Puerto Rican Michiganders out there...

BUT, with all due respect, can we put the stuff dumpy pledges to the presidential thread, and keep this one on Notre Dame Cathedral? I'm not a Catholic, and I abhor the idea of our tax dollars going to another country to rebuild a church (for so many reasons, it is its own thread), but I also think the Cathedral is a very important building that has done a huge amount to shape our society- in good and bad ways.

So let's keep focused here, people.

Re: Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down...

FYI, since 1905, the French Government owns all the cathedrals. The municipalities own the village churches.

Right. What were the rows of wooden seats called again? Oh yeah.

What say we help Puerto Rico or Flint first.

ETA: the name of the freaking thread is "Notre Dame CATHEDRAL is burning down..."

You're wrong on this one. It's a church that is a helluva lot more important than your church down the street. It is a heritage site that the entire world cares about.

The argument against donating is it's already got over a billion euros in pledged donations, so our money is unnecessary.

It's not important because it's a church. We're not donating money to it because it's a church.

Indiana, we are simply passing through history.

This... this is history.

If you want to donate your money, go right ahead. Leave my money out of it.

"You want to go to the moon, you pay for it." No. That's not how this works.

It may not be a duty for government to recognize that some things should be spent on just for the ennoblement of the species, but it is a valid exercise of power. We aren't ants and we don't all want to spend our existence picking lint out of our navels. Some things are important.

Flint isn't important. Got it.

It's not a church, it's a world heritage site. Notre Dame is way bigger than Jesus.

Completely agree. The world should all chip in.
